Main Street, August 1960

I am hoping to make your Monday nicer by posting today's lovely photos of Main Street USA, circa 1960.

Let's start with this image that is different from anything else I have, which makes it pretty special! We're looking at Main Street Station above some beautiful rose bushes. It hardly feels like an amusement park at all. Notice the sign for the new "Nature's Wonderland" over to our left.

And here's a nice shot of Main Street, looking beautiful and vibrant (but not too vibrant!). I've always loved the color choices that were made for the various buildings back in those days. A Surrey is coming toward us, and would look funereal except for those bright yellow wheels. And the Omnibus just passed by - don't you want to run and jump onto the platform, and run up to the top level? To our right you can see one of the cool signs that adorned the lamp posts for a few years...

… Here's an image of one just like it (not mine, unfortunately); as you can see, it's for the Art of Animation Exhibit in Tomorrowland. It's a mini-poster!

...aaaaaAAAND *snap* Monday is nicer! :D

Lovely place, lovely flowers, lovely day, I wanna festive shirt and a surrey with fringe on top and the Maj wants a vintage mini-poster. Such needs have we, such needs.

I could practically leap into that second image. I liked the color palette they used on Main Street back in those days too.

What's so ironic is that when Disneyland opened over half a century ago, they advertised Main Street, USA as a place of half a century ago. Now much of Disneyland is of half a century ago.

I wouldn't recommend attempting to leap into that second image, Ken. I tried. It's extremely hard on the monitor.

Too late, Chuck. Now I have to order a new monitor.

Chiana, I'm glad today's pics made your Monday better! As for needing the mini-poster, I know it is frivolous… but I still want it!

K. Martinez, whenever I recognize some part of Disneyland that dates back to the 50's, it makes me happy. But when I hear about something like that being removed… I don't like it!

Chuck, I guess you don't have one of these cool new holographic monitors?

Nancy, somehow your comment made me think "Are there trees on WDW's Main Street?". I'll have to go check!

Ken, when will you ever learn!

Major - WDW's Main Street does have trees, although I can't remember the variety (maybe an elm of some sort?) and have misplaced the reference book I learned them from. They were specifically selected for their slower and more vertical growth to avoid the issues they had at Disneyland with the trees getting too big and dwarfing the scale of the buildings. They replaced the trees along the narrower part of DL's Main Street in the 80's with the same variety for the same reason.

I think I spy somebody in that foliage.
