Dark and Mungy Tomorrowland, 1959

Today's slides are from a bunch that is generally very nice; bright, colorful, well-composed, and full of fiber. But it looks like some weather scooted in later in the day, making things (as the title says) dark and mungy. (Yes, I made up "mungy". Think of "hungry", only without an "r").

This one would have been super nice if the photographer had adjusted his q-stop and opened the apache on his camera. Sorry to get so technical. The inside of the Space Bar looks so dark that it seems that customers would walk out covered in ink. The Skyway must have been down on this particular day - as you'll see in a future post, the Matterhorn was under construction.

More munginess; Here are the fountains that could be seen in front of CIRCARAMA building. If you stand on your head, you can just see a smidgen of the Monsanto plastic house to the left.

Major-

'Mungy', you say-? I think the technical term is "crushed blacks". And is it just me, or does the kid with the white tee shirt look as though he's walking around with an undersized head-? (Perhaps he has the 'mungies'). I know there's a bad pun in there somewhere...

I kinda like the shot of the fountains at the CirCARama building. Its rather unusual angle captures a great energy.

Thanks, Major.

This post is making me think of Munchos potato chips. Do they still make those? I think they were reconstituted potatoes like Pringles, but not stackable and not packaged in a can.

@ TM!-

Need you ask-? Of course they still make Munchos - both 'Original' and 'Flamin' Hot® Flavored Potato Crisps'. Yes - please don't call them 'chips'-!

Munchos rock! Of course, I've always been a fan of completely inorganic foods!

It was a dark and mungy night...

Are "the mungies" anything like "the fungus among us?"

When I was a kid, one of the tabbies in the gang of neighborhood stray cats earned the nickname "Muncho" because he crunched especially loudly when we fed him.

I can never get enough of that Space Barchitecture. Especially love the rows of bucket chairs in the shade. It looks so comfy on a hot day! But I *really* want to step through the screen and dance around in that Circarama fountain. As someone mentioned above, it's a really interesting angle, and it highlights the contrasting colors and textures.

Ah, 'twas a slow day for the Skyway. Just the one bucket and a single CM shuttling back and forth on foot to do the honors at each end. Or did I dream that...

And weren't there fountains that you could control yourself? Were those over on the other side?

Nanook, haha, it really DOES look like the kid has a tiny head. He doesn’t have “the mungies”, he has the “cold robbies” (Pogo reference!).

TokyoMagic! Munchos, oh my gosh, I had totally forgotten those. I loved ‘em back in the day. I have no idea if you can still buy them.

Nanook, don’t forget the new “Tuna ’n Mustard” Munchos.

stu29573, I am still a big fan of “Bugles” (remember those?), though they are pretty greasy. I also was a fan of “Daisies”, “Whistles”, and “Pizza Spins”. I wish those were still available!

Melissa, you were more creative than I was… we called our cat “Crunchy Kitty” because she made so much noise eating. The water in the Circarama fountain is a powerful hallucinogen!

Patrick Devlin, they didn’t even run a single bucket… if you wanted to ride you had to hang on to the cable. As for the fountains that could be controlled by guests… I have no idea! If they existed that would be another fascinating detail that I’ve never heard before.

Major, it may not have been weather that munged up those photos. The old Anscfadak Cadet Brownie Super Reflex 35 1A was notorious for sticky apaches at the higher Q settings. If you didn't catch it in time, you could ruin a half a roll of film before the camera caught fire.

Patrick, by 1959 there were quite a few fountains you could control yourself scattered throughout the Park. They were installed in response to a major guest complaint from Opening Day.

Patrick, the fountains you're remembering were from The Bathroom Of Tomorrow.

You can see a few playful little squirts (my apologies to the JC Skippers among us) working them about 2/3 down this page:

All this talk of Munchos, Bugles, and the like makes me remember that one time we were moving house and found a bunch of O'Boises inside the fold-out couch.

Oh, Chuck, you wascally wabbit, I read your remark thinking, "There were?" Beautifully played.

And thanks, Mark. My memory of the fountains is actually pretty solid, unlike so many others. I'm always afraid with the depth of knowledge of the local crowd here to point out details regarding past attractions and such without me sounding the total prat.

Melissa, I'd completely forgotten about O'Boisies. Can't believe I'd completely missed the humor in the name. I feel like such a spud.

@ Major-

A Pogo reference, eh-? I'm waiting for Moon Mullins-!

@ Mark H. Besotted-

Thanks for answering the hands-on 'water feature' question for Patrick.

And how very 1950's the moving objects of all that 'valve-turning' should be 'flying saucers'-! In addition to the "Bathroom of the Future", which seemed to garner all the publicity, there was also the "Laundry of the Future", which according to the Crane brochure: "... only hints at possible attractive settings for the home laundry with Crane material". The mind simply boggles at the thought.

For some reason now, after reading everyone's comments, I'm thinking of Funyuns. I did a search to see if those are still being made and a picture of a cat came up. Maybe it's a fairly common thing to name cats after snack foods?

I've run into a lot of cats and dogs named Tater.

Chuck, if there’s one thing I know, it’s cameras! Since cameras could catch fire so easily, you could often identify a true photographer by the heavily-bandaged hands.

Mark H. Besotted, now that you mention it, you are absolutely right. How come I didn’t think of it!

Melissa, oh boy, oh boy, O’Boisies!

Patrick Devlin, I am embarrassed to admit that at first I thought Chuck was referring to toilets.

Chuck, don’t they make O’Boisies any more? I don’t buy chips often, though I love ‘em.

Nanook, I’m more of a “Gasoline Alley” man myself. How many Skeezix toys do YOU own?! ;-) (I have a Kayo figurine that I am very fond of, too).

TokyoMagic!, I have had Funyuns relatively recently; they aren’t great, but I crave them occasionally. I knew a cat named “Mr. Spaghetti”, and think I read about one called “Speedy Tomato”. Not snacks exactly…

Melissa, maybe you need to drive more carefully.

Sorry, I missed out on all the fun today. I had too many of those "slugs" on thursday and was feeling a little runny and slow.

The pea soup yesterday had plenty of fiber but the high salt content is toying with my blood pressure. Maybe some of that green fountain water will fix me up. Yum.

Oh well, maybe I'll just have a Marathon bar and an Aspen apple soda and I'll be on the mend. Don't laugh Dark and Mungy on the Edge of Town was a big album for Bruce Springsteen.

Chuck said...

Thanks, Alonzo. I'll never hear that song the same again.

If Instagram had a "mungy" filter, it would make every photo look like these.

Even in their murkiest, they're still awesome. Thanks for these great angles on some old favorites! Can't get enough of the atomic fountains!

Arrived late to this post. I recall working one of those wheels color-coded to specific fountains. It's been so long ago though that I had begun to doubt that memory. Wow, it's really true! KS
