More Devlin Family Photos - Part 08

Here are two terrific photos from the Devlin family! These are a continuation of the batch from September, 1961.

First up is this picture of a top-hatted Mickey Mouse out in front of the park, happily greeting some of his young fans. I like this particular Mickey costume, though I know some people do not. Patrick is standing right next to the mouse, and I believe that Tom is in the checked shirt. The girl in the mouse ears is an interloper! I love the glimpse of the posters along the fence, and the parking lot with the Monorail track.

Next we're right outside of Merlin's Magic Shop, and three Devlin kids have found Pluto, who is humble and lovable. By now you all probably recognize them, but we've got Patrick, Mary, and Judy. Each kid has a sticker (or tag) on their shirts, I wish we could see them better!

Starting today I will be out of town until Sunday evening! As always there will be new posts for you even though I am away, and I will try to respond to comments when I can.

Hmmmm...

I see Patrick is quite the fashion trend-setter: Properly cuffed jeans - well, sorta - and red socks-! (I'm certain the plaid models can't be too far behind).

Thanks, Devlin's, for sharing.

I'm loving the red socks, Patrick! Seriously!

I see a Frankenstein mask in the window of the magic shop (above Pluto's shoulder). It looks like there might be other masks in the window as well.

...and I've worn red socks to this very day!

The stickers (I think they're stickers) we have on in the second picture are the identifying tags for the Magic Kingdom Club's directors' day. We always called it the "Free Trip." Here's the shot of us all together just after entering the Park. It was a fun treat to be able to go on the rides all day without needing tickets.

Thanks, as always, Major for your work in scanning and, no doubt, lovely color correction.

I love the angle on that first one. It manages to capture the excitement and flavor of the entrance plaza without actually showing the MS train station.

That Mickey costume must have been awkward to wear. The cast member's head appears to be inside the top hat (note the screen material panel in the front of the hat band), and they wouldn't be able to use their arms. No wonder the former cast member who commented several days ago about being pushed into the moat in a Mickey costume during that era needed help being pulled out.

As always, these are a fun bunch, Devlins. Thanks for continuing to share!

Nanook, if there’s one thing a four year old knows, it’s fashion! I’ll bet Patrick got another couple of years out of those jeans with those spare inches of denim.

TokyoMagic!, at least his socks match, unlike mine. Thanks for pointing out the Frankenstein’s monster mask… my brother and I always wanted to see the masks in the Magic Shop!

Patrick Devlin, now we are used to going on whatever ride we want as much as we want, but I remember on “Navy Nights” not needing ticket books, and it seemed awesome at the time. Now I miss the tickets!

Chuck, those costumes are similar to the Dwarf and the 3 Little Pigs costumes; I can’t imagine not being able to use the arms; at some point any of those characters could trip and go down, and then they’d be stuck like a turtle on its back. I guess a passing cast member would have to help. I must have missed the comment (somehow) about the cast member being pushed into the moat!! Was that on GDB?!

PS, I really am about to leave town right now. Just thought I'd check in while I still could.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing. Judy has Pluto by the tail and he's still being a good sport.

Unlimited ride use was much better back in the days you could put it to good use. Our last trip we got 10 attractions in before the crowds and fatigue kicked in. At $100 (gate)thats $10 to hear yo-ho-yo-ho up close and personal. Alas the park of our youth is gone, gone, gone.

Great pics. I coveted the masks they had in the shop. Parents
wouldn't go for it though. Did get the little Genie
bottle from there.

TokyoMagic! I had to download this photo just to see the Frankenstein mask in the window, but you are right, it’s there. You don’t know how close I came to calling “the Emperor has a new Frankenstein mask!”

Patrick, I had to look up the “Magic Kingdom Club”. I can’t tell you how empty and unfulfilled I feel about my childhood now.

Although…
Once a year dad’s union would rent out the park, and we would get to ride the attractions all we wanted. The cool thing was you didn’t need any tickets. The park would close around 6PM, the paying guests would exit the park at that point, and then the union members and their families would have the entire park until about midnight. Dad was WAY TOO frugal to be paying for Disneyland himself, but I was very happy to have had that once a year experience, even if it was only for about six hours.

There was nothing quite as grand as attending Disneyland for a private party. Depending on the size of your group, you would have the park all to yourself, or it would be shared with other companies.

Some time (most-likely) in the late 80's or early 90's, I attended a private party where the attendance was estimated to be 10,000, but only about 7,500 folks actually showed-up. You can just imagine how sparsely-populated the park was that night-! I'm not exaggerating in the least when stating I stood in Town Square looking towards the Sleeping Beauty Castle and probably spied not more than three or four people walking around Main Street-! Good times, undoubtedly lost forever.

Yes, thank you Devlin family! I love vintage costumed character pics and these are winners.

Back when my friends and I were APs, we used to enjoy going on rainy days. Talk about sparsely populated. But you are right Nanook, the days of “sparsely populated’ are indeed undoubtedly lost forever. Tell you what, when the apocalypse kicks in I’ll meet you at the Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Nice pics today Patrick, thank you!

Aw heck, Kurt, 'twasn't me. Thanks go to my brother, Tom, or as he's been referred to of late, "The Keeper of the Pictures." Tom has had the same address for the last forty years, or so, and managed to end up with the slides from my Dad's ubiquitous camera.

Major, I am clearly confused. It evidently wasn't GDB, but I'll be darned if I can find where it was!
