Twain and Columbia, July 7 1961

It seems incredible to me, but this photo of the Mark Twain at its loading dock is unlike any other that I have! And I have plenty of pictures of the Mark Twain at the dock. The angle is unusual, and even dramatic! Maybe there's a bit more empty asphalt than I would normally want. Notice our girl with the fluffy hat to the right.

There goes the Columbia! Look at all the masts and spars and ropes and sails and stuff. In its day the original "Columbia" was probably the state-of-the-art in high-tech travel. Imagine going around the globe in this thing!

Around the world on THAT THING? With that many people on deck? Following an underwater track? Not on your life...

Well, given the current news about cruise ships tipping over I'd say an underwater track sounds rather reassuring!

In the future, all Italian Cruise Ships will come with an underwater track instead of a Captain...

Ooh, sorry, that was harsh, I don't mean it.

I do miss the Columbia. I haven't ridden that since high school. It was running the first day of our last visit and I didn't ride. Wait till tomorrow, I said. Then it was shut every day after. Silly me. Maybe I need a track too.

And I loved running the Columbia...especially on nights with a full moon. Didn't take much imagination to feel far away from the real world.

Too bad you can't do that anymore. Fantasmic! is fun for a few viewings, but after that I really miss the feel of the big decks after dark.

By "big decks" I mean the Columbia and Mark Twain. I fully realize Disneyland has never had an aircraft carrier or amphibious assault ship.
