Arrrrr! April 1966

Today we're in Fantasyland with Chip and his family. Thanks to Chiana for naming him "Chip"!

I don't know why this photo cracks me up. Oh wait, yes I do! Is it just me, or does Captain Hook look jealous? His expression says, "What the...? Not again!". He's on the outside lookin' in. Smee doesn't need glasses, but likes them as an accoutrement. As you can see, they're really just little magnifying glasses for his cheeks.

From the pleased-as-punch expression on mom's face, Chip is now riding his very own flying elephant. You often see folks casually leaning on the Disneyland trash cans or in this case, resting an article of clothing on one. I realize that Disneyland trash cans are special, but still, it's a trash can!

Here's a swell photo of the lagoon and Skull Rock as the sun finally starts to peek through the funk. It won't last though, you'll see. Don't worry, our friends go to the park for two days, and the second day is bright and sunny. Whoa, check out the décolletage on the Chicken of the Sea mermaid. Scandalous! Meanwhile, we get a pretty good look at the actual dining area, shady and cool, with the relaxing sound of waterfalls. It helps you to digest before your spin on the Teacups.

You're welcome. hehe I just cracked up at that pic too. Hook's attitude and Chip's smile are too marvelous. We wish we'd have a pic with characters turn out so good huh?

Rest assured, those Walt-era trash bins were clean enough to use as luncheon counters. My visiting grandparents from New York City (ca 1969) were astonished at how clean the park was, even the "garbage cans". And he should know, he was a building superintendent.

Arial view of skull rock memory flood:
The girl in the knee high white socks is standing next to my favorite seat when we use to grab a bite to eat hear at the 'tuna boat'. We also grabbed this table next to the rock. I can still hear the waterfall noise and see everyone having a wonderful time at the happiest place on earth.
Thanks for the wonderful shot.

What Thufer said!

I am a huge fan of the grotto dining area. We had lunch there on every trip. Please more photos of the lagoon and the grotto!

I remember the paving was a special pebbled pattern, nothing like it anywhere else. The tables and seats were barrels with bright colored circle tops. The awnings were sailcloth fabrics like a pirates hideout...

Wow, it's all coming back now.

Thank you Major!

"décolletage" whoa, watch those big words Major - not all of us is so smart - LOL!!

The Smee photo gave me chuckle too, what's not to laugh at!

Your top photo is hysterical.

Hook's laser beam eyes have zeroed in on poor, unsuspecting Chip. And a blood bath is just seconds away...

Thanks, Major.

AWESOME!!

every time i see pics of this area, esp as nice as these, it makes me sooo mad that i never got to see it in person....

from the look of pic #2, it looks like Hook as taken Mr Smee away and given him a piece of his mind :( Mr. Smee was the second character my daughter ever met at MK at WDW (Pluto was the first) so im loving this memory ;)

as for Mom and the trash can, it looks like someone is hiding right next to her...unless that is not a pair of white shoes i see there on the ground....

and the Skull Rock dining area is so gorgeous, this is one of the nicest photos i can remember seeing

thanks for these today, Major!

I'm with all of you, I loved Skull Rock! There is an awesome night shot of it in this group of slides, you'll just have to wait for it though.

Nancy, you are right, I didn't see Chip hiding back there.

And VDT, "décolletage" is the only big word I know!

Is that figurehead really Tinkerbell's cousin? There's a family resemblance there, I tink.

I miss this area SO much! Oh, and I would never place anything of mine on top of a trash can....even a Disneyland trash can.
