I like this first selection in today's Random Assortment! It's almost a "throwaway" photo, but I still consider it a keeper because of its "you are there" quality. We're on the shady side of Tomorrowland circa 1962, heading towards the Hat Bar (and beyond that, the Art Corner), with a sliver of the Flight Circle to our left. The kid in the foreground is hefting his movie camera, hope he got plenty of cool shots!
Now we hop to 1965, and to the north end of Town Square. All you water fountain fans - - this one's for you! I would head right towards the Magic Shop for a look at the monster masks. To be honest I probably would have skipped the Wurlitzer shop in favor of the Main Street Theater to watch Thomas Edison's "The Great Train Robbery". And then I would stop in to the Swift Market House for a full-contact game of checkers, and maybe some meat.
Here's an early (1956) shot of Tom Sawyer Island and the infamous burning settler's cabin. Ha ha, that settler is a riot, he's entertaining us with the old "arrow through the chest" gag! A classic. The island looks very new, with young trees and shrubs allowing views that would be obscured by foliage soon.

Two of my favorite places to see early pictures of are TSI and the JC. To see these areas with early vegetation is always a pleasure. There is something youthful and promising of a long history to come.
Major, there are some pictures of DL that always hit home for me. And the first one of TL is one of them. A rememberance of some great times in my life. Thanks, Richard.
I had to wait a few minutes for my breathing to slow down from that candid camera shot of the water fountain.
As for the settler's cabin, now we know where Steve Martin got is signature "arrow thru the head" gag.
That kid is holding his Dad’s camera. Better be careful. Those were expensive back then.
The 'throwaway' shots are sometimes the real gems! Thanks for the look.
Great shots! I think that on the other side of the hat bar is the Crane Exhibit, and behind us is the Art Corner. That tree next to the Flight Circle was between the circle and the A.C. The TWA moon rocket was to the left and on the other side of the Circle, and the Avenue of the Flags is to the right.
i wish we could watch his movie...
nice pictures today; random is always good!
Rrright you are, Major! Love the "you are there" moment and gosh how that cabin area grew - here it looks pretty darn real, like they recently cleared the spot to build it and... tragedy. Great park Walt, a glimpse of the good and bad of the Frontier along with our entertainment.
