Mermaid Ahoy! - August 13, 1960

Tthe original Submarine Voyage managed to combine  "reality" - modern nuclear subs crossing beneath the North Pole - with legend and fantasy - the lost city of Atlantis, Sea Monsters, and of course, Merms.

Oh my gosh, there's a mermaid right below us! Quick, throw something at her to get her attention! I have some pennies.

I love this picture, with the Monorail swooping into the frame, the white oleander flowers in the foreground, the sub, the blue water, and of course....

... mermaids! Whooo-eee, the one on the rock is real beauty. Notice her pal swimming in the foreground.

Don't eat the oleander, kiddies!

Oh, wow, those are the clearest candid mermaid shots I've seen in a long time.

Oh, look! It's the furniture company on an expedition to the North Pole.

Nice tan!

Most of the furniture they bring is gray and metal, and watch out for expensive delivery charges...that vehicle runs on nuclear energy!

Neat pictures, Major, maybe the best yet.

BTW, I have been wondering about the speaker we have noticed in some of the oldest pictures. I noticed in some of the oldest pictures, the mermaids are holding musical instruments like harps or lyres. I wonder if the speaker was used to play a music track, the song of the mermaids.

TokyoMagic!, I sprinkle a little bit of Oleander on top of casseroles to make them extra delis.

Melissa, I was happy to see these when I acquired the bunch!

K. Martinez, those mermaids love their traditional early-American mahogany furniture.

Caspian, if those gals didn't manage to get good tans, they just weren't trying!

Bill, when my dad was in the navy I had one of those old gray metal desks. It must have weighed a ton.

JG, I have wondered the same thing about the speakers… it was either that, or maybe the mermaids could actually speak to people?

I have vague (and I mean vague) memories that trigger me to say the mermaids could speak to guests...something like the sirens calling the sailors.

And now we have seagulls. It's a brave, new world. On the plus side, I bought plans for a time machine off the internet. Will let you know when I get it working.

@Anonymous - I remember the sirens calling to Uncle Scrooge.

"Pennies, nickels, quarters, dimes
come to us while there’s still time.

Golden ducky ever bold
look into our eyes of gold."

the addition of the flowers in the foreground makes this picture come to life beautiful colors :)

Look at this stuff; isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl,
The girl who has everything?

I wanna be where the furniture is,
I wanna see the cabinets installing,
Sitting around on those - what do you call 'em?
Oh – Moroccan leather Morris chairs!

Sittin' on rocks is a boring biz,
Divans are required for lounging, sprawling;
Arranging knickknacks on a - what's that word again?
Louis XVI mahogany étagère…

Up with the beds, with the dinettes,
Up with the five-piece living room sets,
Just a settee - wish I could be
Part of that world!
