Richfield Autopia, July 1958

I have two extra-nice beauties for you today!

Let's walk all the way to the back of Tomorrowland. The Skyway terminal is to our right, but I am interested in this "Autopia" that I have heard so much about. It sounds like a hoot.

I absolutely love this shot of the entrance to the Tomorrowland Autopia - sponsored by Richfield, of course! The "three C's" are in evidence here - Color, Clarity, and Composition. The blues and yellows are so nice you can practically taste them. Synesthesia, anyone? Beyond the modern, minimalist structure we can see rolling green hills - all manmade, of course.

Even the guests look relatively spiffy!

Next is this fantastic photograph of the Richfield Eagle. His beady red eye is giving me the willies.

WOW!!! The Richfield Eagle photo is the winner of the year. What a beauty in subject, composition, color and clarity. And rarity too! Thanks, Major.

I agree with Ken - that one's simply gorgeous!

Did anyone preserve that eagle after Richfieled was bought out?

I was 8 yrs. old in '58 and my second trip to the park.
One of my favorite rides, apart from every other ride.

This is my favorite Autopia facade/entry but alas I was too young to see it in person. These are awesome shots today, kudos to the Major. *Insert hand clap here*, thanks for posting.

I had to look up “Synesthesia”, not sure I yet understand it, but I think it has something to do with why I keep showing up at this blog every day.

I like that Richfield Eagle. I don’t remember it as a kid though. It adds a nice dynamic to the overall look of vintage Tomorrowland. They should bring it back. It is indeed a nice photo also, it’s just SO darn clear, almost looks 35MM.

Are those clam-diggers with the red t-shirt in the close-up? And flip-flops, too! We all got clam-diggers one Summer not long after this photo was taken. Memory is a funny (funny-peculiar not funny-haha) thing, ain't it?

Synesthesia, heh.

K. Martinez, I still remember when I was going through this lot and thinking “Whoo-hoo”!. There are some other really great ones in this set - one or two might be saved for my tenth anniversary post, we’ll see.

Chuck, he was preserved in formaldehyde.

DrGoat, I think that the Autopia has always been a particular favorite for young boys.

Alonzo, I never saw this façade either, but I love the way it resembles a service station, sort of.

Monkey Cage Kurt, synesthesia is a phenomenon with some people in which they see a color and “hear” a musical note, or taste something and “see” a color - and so on. It’s kooky!

Patrick Devlin, somehow I would think that clam-diggers would become a bigger deal when the Beach Boys and the “beach party” movies became a thing, but that was all four or five years after this. Shows what I know.

JG, it is a 25 cent word!
