Main Street, January 1974

Today's photos are the first in a batch of images from 1974 that you will be seeing on GDB. So fans of Disneyland in the 70's might like them especially! They are dated January 1974, but of course they could actually be from December 1973.

A girl and her little brother pose near the town square cannon... the park must have opened shortly before this photo was snapped. See how low the sun still is in the east! Christmas wreaths can be seen in the background, as well as the the Preview Center, where you could get a glimpse of artwork and models for coming attractions at the park.

The conditions were tricky for photography I guess; less exposure would leave the shadows inky black. As it is, the west side of Main Street (and the castle beyond) are practially blown out by the brilliant early morning sunshine. But it's still a neat photo, you can almost feel the chill in the air (which would probably be gone soon in spite of it being December).

By the way Major....someone the other day was asking you about trees. I know that the trees in that second pic were replaced in the Fall of 1981. (I don't know if they were original trees from opening day or if they have been replaced again since 1981.) I believe the trees in the Plaza were replaced within the past ten years. Personally, I liked the mature trees....who cares if they are blocking the view of buildings or the fireworks?

These are fun ones! Love the little hint of Christmas tree off to the left in the first one and the wreaths... and the early morning crispness of the whole thing.

The 1973 holiday season only ran from December 21 to January 1, 1974(!). Where the heck is everybody?!

Disneyland during the holidays minus annual passholders. Love it.

Yes, those early mornings were just like that. The 70's were a great time to work there. It was a different Disneyland, now nearly lost to today's masses.

Look at the 2nd pic. This is the Christmas season. If this picture was taken today, there would be no room on Main Street to move. It would be swamped with the unforgiving masses. The sidewalks filled, the street nearly full. Disneyland has become a lot busier in the last 25 years.

Hey, I'm getting to be a grumpy old man longing for days of old.

It was me asking about the trees. The trees don't ever seem to grow on Main Street. They are always the same size in comparison to the gigantic trees of Adventure Land and Frontier Land.

Ah, I remember those overhead garlands.

My favorite time and place.

Thank you, Major.
