A Pair From 1959

I'm using up the last two scans from a lot of slides from 1959.

Here she comes, the Chicken of the Sea Mermaid, with her scepter raised as if to grant us a fishy wish. Close your eyes, maybe it will come true. In spite of the many (MANY) photos that I have seen of this ship-shaped restaurant, I am still impressed with the level of detail that Walt's Imagineers used. That rigging! The invisible sails! The poop deck (heh heh)! The scent of bilge water was piped into the restaurant for that extra touch of verisimilitude.

Did you drive all the way to Anaheim with your pet in the car? I don't know why you would do that, but luckily you didn't have to leave Buster or Mittens in the hot car all day - there was a cool, comfortable kennel right outside the entry gates. A can of Ken-L-Ration food was included as part of the deal. Each pet also got one pack of Marlboro cigarettes - used as currency while in "the joint".

Plenty of blossoms added color and beauty, even here. Meanwhile, I don't think that the fire hydrant was placed there by accident!

I used to have a pet mouse named "Ringo", I wonder if they would have been able to accommodate him? His drumming might have bothered the other pets, admittedly.

Major-

How did you know about the 'piped-in scent'-?? In fact, that reminds me of the old family home, where the scent of Toll House cookies was pumped-into special ducting, making its way to, of all things, the Verisimilitude Room on the lower level of the home.

And as for 'Buster' or 'Mittens' - our family favored such names as 'King', 'Sport', 'Max', and 'Tater Tot'.

Thanks, Major.

I guess there is no reason to check your pet into the kennel anymore. During my last several years of going to Disneyland, I would often see dogs inside the park...and these were not seeing-eye dogs. What I didn't realize is that they are allowed on the rides! The very last time I was at DCA, I was riding behind a very large dog. While the dog and it's owner were boarding the vehicle, there was a delay because they were trying to decide whether the dog wanted to sit on the floor of the vehicle or in the seat. It ended up riding in the seat, which seems a little unsanitary if you ask me. As I exited the ride, I asked a cast member if animals are allowed on all the rides and he said they are allowed on the attractions that are "safe for them to ride." I wouldn't think that anything with a moving vehicle would be safe for them to ride. I love animals, but please leave them at home or in the Disneyland Kennel!

I forgot to mention that the incident described above happened while riding the "Monsters Inc." attraction!

I want to get the Magic Glasses that let you see the invisible sails. I hear they're rare and kind of expensive when they do show up for sale. Darn...

When I was a kid we brought our Weiner dog (Heidi) to the kennel "once" because mom thought it was too long a day to leave her at home alone.

Nice people but the dog hated it and shook like a Northridge parking garage when we handed her over. Mom felt worse thinking about her locked in a cage. We rode the Monorail and when we passed the Kennel all we could see through the window was the little brown blob huddled against the back corner of the cage. Needless to say the dog got sprung and we had a short day at the park that year. Never put her in there again

I never could take any of my dogs to a kennel. They always seemed like miserable places for a dog. Nice set today. Thanks, Major.

TokyoMagic!, So did the dog enjoy the ride? That's what I want to know.

Alonzo P Hawk, I like the name of your Weiner dog.

I am putting the picture of the mermaid on my desktop, hoping for a tuna fish blessing, complete with little red sword toothpicks.

Thank you, Major.

Nanook, that piped-in scent was written up in an old issue of “The E-Ticket”. A variation of it is now used in “Pirates”!

TokyoMagic!, these days people take their dogs EVERYWHERE. The grocery store, restaurants, you name it. I went to a nice restaurant a few weeks ago and a lady had her dog at the foot of her chair, where people were tripping over themselves to avoid stepping on it. What gives? Why does every business allow this? I had no idea that people could bring their pets into the park, what a horrible idea. Yikes.

TokyoMagic!, you mentioned the issue of it being non-sanitary, and even though people are not exactly germ free, I agree with you, dog’s butts on the seat is kind of a gross thought.

Patrick Devlin, those Magic Glasses were sold in the Magic Store on Main Street, and now go for hundreds of dollars.

Alonzo P Hawk, your story makes me think of a friend, whose significant other will no longer go on any trips (not to Europe, not to New York City, no East Coast to see the foliage changing colors, NO trips) because she can’t bear to leave her beloved pets behind. So if he wants to go to those places, he goes alone. So crazy.

K. Martinez, hmmm, actually, some of those rides might freak a dog out! Weird sights, loud noises… could be a disaster.

JG, “a tuna fish blessing”, ha ha.

I'm imagining a live dog jumping out of a boat and fetching the keys for the locked-up pirates, or perhaps running amok in Storybook Land in a re-enactment of scenes from Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World. It's a lot funnier in my head than it would be in reality. Most things are.

Major, Nah! Just give them a few doggy tranks and they'll be fine.

Ken, kennels always seemed like miserable places to me too. On all my trips to Orlando, Tokyo, etc., I would only go if I could get a family member or friend to come by the house each day to feed my cat. I will not board him for any period of time. I saw the traumatized look on his face when he had to spend the night at the vet once. And yes, the dog did appear to enjoy "Monsters Inc."

Major, I think all you have to do is get a special certificate claiming that you medically or psychologically "need" your pet with you at all times and you can legally take them wherever you want, including restaurants. Again, I LOVE animals! And when I wrote that comment I did think about how unsanitary human beings are and about the microbiological studies they have done where they have found fecal matter on taxi cab seats, restaurant booths, store check-out counters, and pretty much every other public place you can imagine. It's everywhere! But for some reason, the thought of the dog but touching the seat seemed a little worse. In reality, it probably isn't any worse than what humans are leaving behind. And isn't that a nice thought for 12 o'clock noon, today!

Chuck, Ha, ha! I was actually imagining the dog jumping out of the vehicles too! So, I wouldn't think it would be the safest thing for a dog. I really kind of surprised that Disney allows it. Maybe legally, they have to.

Chuck, if that ever happened, I wonder if there would be a quick change of rules?

K. Martinez, give ME some doggy tranks.

TokyoMagic!, it is hard to put a beloved pet in a kennel, but I’m not sure bringing them into hot, crowded Disneyland is such a treat for them either. As Ken said, maybe they need a “happy pill” to calm them down.

There has been discussion and some articles about the companion dog issue, especially at Disneyland. I understand they are trying to come up with some way to stop this tide. People are very obviously taking advantage of this "I need this dog with me for ___________". It has gotten out of hand. I will never forget not that long ago a lady near me over at Magnolia Gardens near Haunted Mansion. She had a baby carriage (the large, old fashioned kind. Not a stroller). Inside was a drooling dog. She was leaning over and pampering it and tucking it in. It was strange and creepy as if the dog was her child. She seemed normal otherwise. I can only guess she had a blanket over it and claimed it was a baby when she entered the Park. I was freaked out.
