The Columbia & The Mark Twain, July 1958

Today's first scan is a wonderful look at Frontierland's riverfront - where most of the action was! I like the composition of this image, with Tom Sawyer Island (including a full raft) to the left, the Columbia at the dock loading up with passengers, and the busy paths that flank the river. The little bandstand to our right wouldn't last very long, but I like it a lot. In the lower foreground guests stroll toward the Plantation House, or perhaps they continued on to the Indian Village.

I'm not sure when this happened, but I used to find pictures like this kind of dull, and might have passed on scanning them. But I've developed a new-found appreciation for this man-made frontier and its river!

Both of these pics are really nice. It's almost like you could merge the two images together and show the entire riverfront stretch from the Mark Twain/Columbia Landing all the way to Fowler's Harbor. Nice set today. Thanks, Major.

Major-

These two really are beauties. Love all the hats in the first one. And the second one has many different points of interest - from someone standing at Tom's Treehouse, the sail from the Columbia, all the way to the chains and posts along the Rivers of America.

Thanks, Major.

K. Martinez, great minds think alike! I did try to merge the two images, but it didn't work, The stuff on the right of photo #2 just didn't align with the stuff on the left of photo #1.

Nanook, I'm glad you liked these... they're such classic views of Frontierland and the River at its most beautiful. Judging from the lack of comments, I guess most people were not impressed!

Well, I'm impressed! I've said how much I love these shots of Frontierland where everything in-shot is themed exactly to show the wild frontier of yesteryear. I can see where the problem in stitching is from since the sail of the Columbia has changed position relative to the Old Mill. Darn, so close...

It's the way Walt wanted it! What's not to like?? KS

Any photos of early Frontierland are good photos, especially with the old "Bandstand on Wheels" included.

Useful to compare your recent posts of TSI maps. I have never seen that oldest one.

Thank you, Major.

Patrick Devlin, I totally agree with you. This was when themeing was taken seriously.

KS, YES!

JG, ha ha, Bandstand on Wheels, I don't think I've heard that one before.

These are both wonderful pics, Major. I think I can see the future location of Star Wars Land in that second one. Have we ever seen the Columbia with just those three sails unfurled? It looks a little odd.

As Darth Vader once said: "Impressive. Most Impressive..."

TM: I agree! You can clearly see the future home of SWL all across the horizon of these pics.

Thanks Major & more river shots please!

I'm always late to the party, but still here. Lovely photos, Major, full points awarded! I may be wrong, but I think that sail configuration would be used in the real world for maximum maneuverability at slow speed, as when docking. It looks like the lower pic was taken first, as the Colombia pulled in to the loading area.
Please, please try again to merge these beautiful shots. Judging by the trashcan and post in front of the waterwheel on the mill, they were taken from the same spot.
Thanks again to you, Major, as well as to all of you volunteer gorillas. This place gives my mind and heart peace.
