Kids in Town Square, February 1961

Here are two disreputable street toughs, pushing their way around Town Square, snapping their fingers in unison, and (strangely) dancing around. The kid with the cereal bowl haircut is practicing his strangling technique on that horse hitch, though he normally likes to use a garrote. Piano wire. The kid with the blond buzz cut is more like Alex from "A Clockwork Orange". He likes ultra-violence, moloko plus, and Ludwig Van.

"Come ON, Dad, I want to shoot the cannon before those people at City Hall move!". "Now, Alex, you can fire your own cannon when you get home". "Aw, gee whiz!". Aaaaaand.... scene.

Major-

And to think, even in Walt's day such disreputable folks were allowed into the Park-! Those two JD's in the first image really look as though they just left reform school, 'fancy' duds, notwithstanding. (Also - that first image is flopped).

Somehow they do seem right at home hoisted aloft that Town Square canon, tho'.

Thanks, Major.

Looks like those no-goodnicks scared everyone right out of Town Square....with the exception of their Ma (Barker?) on the bench behind them in the second pic.

"The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom." "This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence."

The kid with the buzz cut has the sweetest smile. Thanks, Major.

I'm guessing Nanook's eagle eye recognized that the image was flopped by the button-down shirts.

And I never realized the Hotchkiss field guns had tompions (Any day I can work "tompion" into a sentence is a good day).

Nanook, I'm not surprised that one of the images is flopped - these slides were apparently home-made on blank mounts. What kid doesn't dream of firing a noisy old cannon?

TokyoMagic!, that lady scares me way more than the kids do.

K. Martinez, I was too lazy to look up the details of the Korova milbar! But I always thought it was a brilliant bit of weird futurism.

Steve DeGaetano, I have no idea what a tompion is, but based on your enthusiasm, I am going to invest all of my money in tompion stocks. Beverly Hills, here I come!

Major, "A Clockwork Orange" just happens to be one of my favorite films so I'm pretty good at quoting it. It's really the best film Kubrick directed in my opinion, and he directed some pretty awesome films.

K. Martinez, I am especially partial to "2001: A Space Odyssey", and have watched in many MANY times. I find it endlessly fascinating, though I know others find it slow and ponderous.

Major, I'm in total agreement with you about "2001: A Space Odyssey" being endlessly fascinating and I think it's perfectly paced. I've watched it many MANY times as well. Like I said, Kubrick was an awesome director.
