The Disneyland Band and the Oregon Ducks

Sometime just before 1956 turned into 1957, one of the teams that was to participate in the Rose Bowl football game showed up at Disneyland. Because why the hell not? But first, let's have the Disneyland Band (no Vesey Walker, sorry ladies) play a fanfare to welcome them (note the odd Christmas decorations on City Hall in the background). I am guessing that the band is playing a tune called "Mighty Oregon", because...

... the team in question was The University of Oregon Ducks. They look so nice and normal! And yet, you know that these boys got into some shenanigans on a daily basis. I've seen "Animal House" six times and "Revenge of the Nerds" twice (I don't like that one as much), and that qualifies as scientific proof. Unfortunately for the Ducks, they lost the big game, scoring 7 points to the Ohio State Buckeyes' 10 points.

NOTE:

I just heard from Corinne, the wife of GDB reader/friend Chuck (you know him from the comments); she said, "While Scout camping on Friday, Chuck had an accident and has a very serious eye injury (he nearly lost an eye!). He can't really see to blog or type, and says he didn't want you to worry in case you thought he had fallen off the face of the earth or worse, was slumming on another Disney site."

My goodness, I just figured he was off doing something more important than looking at lame Disneyland blogs!

I gather from Corinne's tone that Chuck will ultimately be OK, though it will be a while before we hear from him again. So it couldn't hurt for all of us to send him our best thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery.

Get well soon, Chuck!

Get well soon Chuck! Scouting is a very worthwhile program. Thank you.

Yes, get well soon Chuck!!!

Major, those Christmas decorations do look kind of primitive. They appear to be just painted plywood "flats." I wonder if there were more like that on Main St. or elsewhere in the park?

Get well Chuck. I miss your comments.

Sorry to hear about that Chuck. Get well soon and come back to commenting.

Now that really sucks! I hope your eye will be okay. I'll miss you and your commentary here, but above all I wish you a speedy recovery. Get well soon, Chuck!

Get well soon, Chuck. Your on-line scouts miss you. Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, clean, and reverent.

Whoops, left out "brave". That too.

Cheers, Chuck.

Chuck - Get Well goes without saying; but nevertheless it deserves repeating. I had a 'kinda' eye injury close-call, but it pales from the description here. Looking forward to reading your comments soon-!

Major - Just what exactly are those Christmas decorations at Town Hall-? Xmas carolers riding on a stagecoach, being pulled by some oddly-patterned, black-spotted horses-??

Get well, Chuck! And hurry back. And in other news, Go Ducks!

Gnometrek, I am hoping that Corinne passes your good wishes on to Chuck!

TokyoMagic!, there were more flats on the Emporium for sure (see photos HERE), and I’ve seen a cutout of a rocket with Santa on it above the old Space Bar. The cartoony style reminds me of some old Christmas cards that I have seen.

Matterhorn, Irene, K. Martinez, JG, Nanook, and Tom, thanks for sending along your “get well” wishes!

Nanook, I think that it is supposed to be a Dickensian coach with some carolers; I know I have seen at least one very clear closeup of that very decoration, but I can’t find it now. I thought for sure it was on Daveland, but my search has not yielded any results.

You can see the City Hall decorations a little more clearly HERE

Major-

The other image of the Town Hall decorations made things a bit clearer. The Dickensian - cartoon style look of the "flats" definitely describes them quite well. I suspect seeing them in-person would prove more impressive.

Make that "City Hall".

May God richly bless you with a speedy recovery Chuck! It sounds like you are already blessed with a fine wife who will be there for you in this time of need.

Heal fast and heal well!!!

Thoughts and prayers are with you Chuck. Get well soon! Thanks Corinne for the message. Like Monkey Cage Kurt said, Chuck is blessed to have a great wife like you.

Best,
Amazon Belle

PS a fine post today too Major.

Thanks for the links, Major. They also remind me of the old fashioned (and homemade) Christmas decorations that people used to put out on their front lawns that were just painted plywood.

Those Ducks look mighty. And each and everyone of them should be wearing the Donald Duck "Disneyland Is Ducky" flasher button, but I don't think those buttons were around until the sixties.

Chuck, hopes and prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. It sounds like you have a great lady by your side. Hopefully she can read all our well wishes to you.

Keep in mind the park is implanted in our brains. Even if you can't see the wonderfull pictures Major posts (only for a short time as you will recover) sounds can sometimes fill the void until you heal. I sometimes put old episodes of World of Color/Disney on and listen to it in the background while I work. The sounds of Walt's voice and music/narration from the park can be quite comforting even if I'm not watching. Get well soon!!

FYI...Oregon played in the 1958 Rose Bowl, not 1957. Go Ducks!
