Above Fantasyland, 1966

Skyway views are so common in vintage Disneyland pictures, I sometimes take them for granted. With the exception of glimpses while aboard the Matterhorn, there is no real way to get a bird's eye view anymore. And I doubt that anything will be built there in the next 15 or 20 years that will get guests up in the air.

Today's photos are from 1966, heading toward Tomorrowland. Turning to our left we can see the massive, gleaming white show building for "It's a Small World", which must have opened rather recently. Behind Storybook Land there appears to be some construction going on, though I can't imagine what it would be for. Any ideas?

Continuing in our bucket just a little bit further, we now look down on the Monorail track, the queue area for the Motor Boat Cruise and a small ticket booth.

Nice first pic. Since the image is dated the year “It’s a Small World” opened, my guess is that the construction in the back area was when they pushed out and relocated the Disneyland Railroad track to accommodate "It's a Small World" and the grass field had yet to be planted and filled in. Maybe someone knows different, but that’s my guess.

The area to the left of Small World seems like it is a hole with a bank of dirt. I would guess that it where the train tracks use to run before they were moved back. I remember this area in question back in the 1970's and early 1980's was just a large area covered with long pampa grass growing and a few trees. So I would say it was where the train use to run and it hasn't been backfilled in yet when this photograph was taken.

K. Martinez, I think your guess regarding the Disneyland RR is a good one!

OC Native, looks like you and K. Martinez agree!

The white color scheme is my favorite for the iasw facade. It looks like a sugar cube castle in the first picture.

IASW is a beautiful facade, completely "all-it's-own". I think it's one of the most original things I've ever seen. I love it.

Thank you Major, these are wonderful.

You posted some similar views a while back, but these are taken about 200 feet further west, so the angles are slightly different, with different reveals and backgrounds. I really like the views of the world beyond.

BTW, I agree about the train re-routing. The bare spot is probably a re-vegetated slope.

The park looks so big in these photos, and really clean, too. This is one of my favorite parts of Disneyland.
