Beautiful Tomorrowland, August 1960

Oh boy, vintage Tomorrowland, it's like catnip to me (these photos make me drool and roll around on the ground and act goofy - goofier than usual I mean). There's nothing that we haven't seen before, and yet... the park looks so exciting and beautiful. The colors are so nice, you can practically taste them. Go ahead, lick your computer screen, it's a free country.

It's August 1960, and the Matterhorn was only a year(ish) old, but wow, what a sight. No wonder over 50 photos have been taken of it (maybe 60)! By the looks of things, our photographer was going up the steps to the load platform of the Skyway terminal - maybe they were seconds from boarding their luxury gondola. After being handed a glass of premium champagne, they'll be whisked up into the clean, fresh Anaheim air.

Here we are, whisking. WE'RE WHISKING! I love the hues of the early Skyway buckets, especially my favorite persimmon orange pal. Down below, the Autopia, and Screechy who stopped by to say "hello" (well, he just screeched, but we know what he meant). The red Mark I Monorail is at the station, and to the left, the Astro Jets are in the astro-jetting.

Major-
The [relatively] sparse sprinkling of snow topping the majestic Matterhorn gives it that extra 'umph' against the blue sky, making it a stand-out amongst its fellow Matterhorns'-!

Another vote for those metallic Skyway colors-!

Thanks, Major.

Interesting fact: Some cats have the 'receptor' for catnip, and they roll around on the floor and act goofy... just like you, Major. While other cats don't have the receptor, and couldn't care less about catnip.

And another thing: Some people say "couldn't care less", while others say "could care less". Obviously, the correct phrase is "couldn't care less". Those other people are disturbed. :-p

I'm licking my screen as I type this (talk about disturbed!). And you're right, Major, the oranges taste like oranges, and the snozzberries taste like snozzberries!

These scans have that Kodachrome look to them; deep saturated colors, a bit on the bluish end of the spectrum.

1) Is the kid closest to us wearing a Donald Duck hat? We're getting a nice view of Screechy's butt. And we can see the other Screechy over there in Fantasyland. And yay! We also see Fudgie the Whale! Taking his perpetual shower behind the waterfall.

2) We can see Fudgie even better in this photo. Isn't that a yellow Bobsled to the left of Gondola #3? And perhaps another one below Gondola #12? I think I count four trashcans, but I'm sure there are more.

Really nice photos today, Major. Thanks.

The Matterhorn's waterfall is at a trickle, so yes, Fudgie The Whale really stands out in these two photos. But even better than that, we get a rare glimpse of Cookie Puss riding the Monorail! ;-)

Thanks for sharing these "Beautiful Tomorrowland" pics, Major!

Possibly Peak Tomorrowland 1955!

There’s only one silver trash visible in photo 1, but we can see some pre-R2D2 drinking fountains, while the sign for the Central Ticket Booth implies the existence of one or more peripheral ticket booths, and the red framework gadget used to measure potential Autopia drivers is front and center.

Photo 2 shows the benefits of Whisking go beyond that glass of champagne, as our elevated viewpoint reveals a second silver trash can, just a hot-dog munch away, a tower of the Castle, and a bobsled racing toward splashdown. The Matterhorn snow pack looks light, but there should be enough water to slow that sled without hazard.

When our bucket reaches fantasyland, I am going to ride Casey Jr. and then Mr. Toad!

Thanks for these beautiful pics, Major!

It’s great to see Fudgie! It’s been a while. He’s more ‘illusive’ than The Dent.

Thanks, Major.

When the cat's away, the mice will play! ;-)
