Snoozers From 1970
Today's pictures are DULLSVILLE, daddy-o. Strictly for squares. Proceed at your own risk.
For instance, here's an unremarkable photo of the Matterhorn, and a buncha trees, a few Skyway gondolas, and lots of smog.
This one isn't so hot either, with bad color, uninteresting composition, and not even much smog. Please lodge your complaints at City Hall!

With a bobsled in motion and a Skyway gondola entering the nostril - what more could we ask for ?!?!
Actually, Major, I like the first picture A LOT! The 2nd one is so-so, but still is appreciated!
Thank you, Major!
Sue
Major-
I'm not so certain the first image is all that dull. It's such an unusual angle, it looks as though the Matterhorn is [at least] partially surrounded by a forest of trees. And the second one - how can you not love the 'featured' drainage grate, undoubtedly used as a custom, 'practice spittoon' when floral Mickey is feeling frisky-!
Thanks, Major.
Nanook, now that you mention it - that IS a great grate! Good night!
Sue
I also have to say that the first pic is not so dull. It looks like it was taken from the top of the chain lift on Casey Jr. That's a very unusual angle. We can even see a backside view...or maybe it is a side view, of Skull Rock and one of it's waterfalls.
Love the first pic. The Matterhorn provides a majestic backdrop to the forested Storybook Land. Thanks, Major.
I thought that the picture of the Matterhorn was taken from outside of the park until I read TokyoMagic's explanation. And although gray skies (in California?!) don't look so good in pictures, they kind of bring back some good memories - at least for me - because that's the best time to visit an amusement park!
Take away the Skyway infrastructure and that first photo reminds me of the miniature sets for Thunderbirds, or maybe the backdrop from a kaiju movie.
If you zoom in closely above the visible railroad track, you can see a couple of the striped "sail" awnings that shaded the seating area for the tuna scow that several of us were geeking out over on June 28th. I think the cascade we can see is the one that drained Skull Rock's left ear.
And the second one isn't completely devoid of merit, either - it features a Santa Fe logo.
Glad I stopped by!
OK, so they ain't so great. But hey, it's Disneyland of yore. We should all be like Mr. Rogers and find the special thing about them, even if it is a foggy day in the neighborhood. Has anyone seen my blue cardi? Thanks Major.
Oh, shoot. I meant "Skull Rock's right ear."
For some reason my brain inserts the sound of natives chanting "Kong, Kong, Kong!" in the first shot. I know it's the wrong studio, but my brain does what it wants, dadgumit!
For example, the brain soundtrack for the second shot is "Meh, Meh, Meh..."
Lou and Sue, I didn’t notice the bobsled! Usually I look for those (for some reason).
Nanook, #1 is an unusual angle, but man, it’s still hard for me to get very excited about it. That drainage grate is amazing - almost “telephone pole amazing”!
Lou and Sue, ouch.
TokyoMagic!, hm, I would have never guessed that that photo was taken from the Casey Jr. attraction. I guess it is a little bit interesting to see Skull Rock from that angle. Thanks for pointing that out!
K. Martinez, I think it’s that thick layer of smog that is kind of ruining the first photo for me. It’s funny, I usually don’t think of Storybook Land as “forested”, but I guess parts of it really are.
Andrew, it is a fairly sunny day, but that “marine layer” as we like to call it does make it look sort of overcast. Maybe some wind blew that away later?
Chuck, what monstrous lizard creature lives in that lonely mountain? Man, I can barely see those striped awnings, I doubt I would have even identified them. And I agree, the waterfall is the “left ear” spill. I do like seeing that Santa Fe logo!
Jonathan, ha ha, maybe I have looked at too many Disneyland slides, I get inured to charms that other people can see. Taking another look at photo #1, I’m noticing an OK look at the pathway behind Skull Rock.
Chuck, I figured you meant our left!
stu29573, I always loved that “Skull Island” set from the 1933 King Kong, especially when Kong is fighting that snake/eel creature inside, with the bubbling water and steam effects. What a movie!
Strictly for squares - I see what you did there.
Anyhoo, give me Disneyland on a crudular day over most other places on a sunshiny one. Short lines and small crowds, here I come!
I see these are dated June 1970...ah "June Gloom" as it looked back then... KS
Melissa, I’m glad you see what I did there, because I don’t!
KS, I suppose that could be a light example of June Gloom; sometimes it can be so heavy that it really does feel like it might rain (as you know)!
(The pictures are square.)
