JG at Knott's Berry Farm
Long-time GDB pal JG graciously sent some of his personal photos (via email) from a trip to Knott's Berry Farm when he was a child, and he said I could share them with all of you!
As you can see, these are from September, 1965. JG is posing with Handsome Brady and Whiskey Bill. Bill is working on a jug, but he likes to take small sips to really enjoy the flavor. He's very cultured, even if he cusses a lot. I cuss a lot too, for dramatic effect. Looks like JG is wearing some Converse "Chuck Taylors", very stylish! I think I had pretty much the same buzzcut at that time.
Uh oh, I hope JG is just taking an impromptu bath, and not being cooked. I hate being cooked! I think there was a similar photo-op at Calico Ghost Town. In fact, I decided to look for one, take a look at a 1963 photo HERE!
And finally, my favorite of the bunch, as JG poses in a magnificent feathered headdress, arms appropriately folded. I believe the gentleman was called "Chief Red Feather", and I seem to recall one of our readers (long ago) saying that the Chief would drive home at night in a Porsche.

I also had a buzzcut at that age. I think it was obligatory. Only, my buzzcut (we called it a 'butch' back then) wasn't flat on top like JG's. Flattops were more rare than yer average butch or crewcut.
1) Looks like little JG is trying to wrestle that jug of "XXX" away from Whiskey Bill... Good luck with that.
2) I wonder what JG soup tastes like? I bet it's "Mmm mmm good".
3) This is also my favorite. Hey! I don't see JG's pant cuffs rolled up halfway to his knees! I thought that was mandatory, like the sneakers and the buzzcut.

Kids can be great actors-- JG physically adapted to each prop and situation.
Knott's had more cannibalism going on Jungle Island, with an explorer sitting in a pot surrounded by canni-woodimals. On the front page of the LA Times for July 18th, 1955, was a big writeup on Disneyland's opening, with a photo of a kid about JG's age sitting in an Adventureland stew pot, ice cream bar in hand. Count the Donner Party among the hard facts and hardy pioneers celebrated by both parks.

Oddly, I do remember each of these photos, especially the Indian headdress photo. The Chief reminded me to fold my arms like that. Shortly after, Sad-Eye Joe and I had a talk. I was amazed how much he knew about me.
These prints were in an envelope marked “Summer 1965” in my mother’s handwriting. There were a number of color and b&w pics of Disneyland and KBF. These 3 are the only Knotts photos. Major posted one of the Disney pics on Fathers Day this year. Taken one day apart. It’s strange how clear some memories can be even if you don’t know exactly when the event took place.

Nanook, those “headdress photos” are always the ones I like the most. Why? I don’t know!
JB, hmmm, I don’t know if we called it a “butch”, I wonder where that name even came from? Seems to have different connotations today, probably unrelated. JG knows good whiskey when he sees it, JG Soup, new from Campbells. Andy Warhol’s painting of a JG Soup can sold for 14 million dollars at auction. Hmmm, good point about the pants cuffs (or lack thereof), how is that even possible?

JG, as I told you in our email exchange, I have precisely ONE photo of myself at Knott’s despite the fact that I went there so many times as a kid. You’re lucky to have your three! No pressure at all, but if you are ever in the mood to share more of your Summer 1965 pix, I’d love to see them.
JG, I love the kettle photo. All that's missing is the stock, vegetables and lots of onions. Nice photos toay.

Sue, I was definitely in the soup for that. Ken, that sounds like a good recipe. JB, I thought the haircut was a “butch” but I know nothing about haircuts. It was definitely flat on top and was the perfect style for hot summers. And I do like a nip of the craythur now and again, definitely a foreshadowing.
