Two From August 1968

Everybody loves the Peter Pan dark ride in Fantasyland. Even Belgians! It's true. Just look at the happy expression on that little girl to our left. The boy in the foreground tries to impress her (and the other little girl) with his souvenir hat, resplendent with its purple ostrich feather.

We've seen plenty of photos of Storybook Land, because it is pretty awesome. But this one has something special: a guy wearing a "Here Comes The Judge" t-shirt! That phrase became popular with the airing of NBC's "Laugh-In", which debuted in January of '68.

Feather boy has some serious colic going on. Little Lulu knows her bob 'do is timelessly cool without needing a feather in her hat, thank you.

Grandma in canal boat is thinking: "I have my grand-children present and we are to take a voyage on a boat piloted by a 'lady' wearing a dress ending inches above her knees and with a redneck aboard. My son-in-law is doing nothing. This world is going to the dogs."

Chiana, I noticed that skirt on the Storybook Land boat... it does seem a bit short by Disneyland standards! Still... no complaints from me. I know an older couple who had a daughter who worked that ride, and they said that at times she had to wear "nude"-colored hosiery AND white socks. They didn't want any bare skin to show.

Look at the amazing cultural loop in that second photo:

Here Comes the Judge -> Flip Wilson -> Sandy Duncan/Danny Kaye version of Pinocchio (Wilson was the Fox) -> Monstro!

And, when I was a kid, I always held my breath 'till we got past the teeth...

I had a misspelling in my comments. Ok. I will start again.

Disney should go back to the costumes they had for Storybook Canals back in the 60's and 70's. The outfits they have now look like something the cast members would wear for the Jungle Cruise rather than a Fantasyland attraction.

Today they are wearing khaki pants/shirt with boots and a safari type helmet. Uninspiring and drab to say the least. The colors are dull browns and greens and nothing bright and colorful. I noticed it when I went to Disneyland last summer.

I don't think it's a Laugh In T- shirt. The phrase from there would have said Here Come da Judge. Might be a sad knockoff, but could have been something else like here comes the bride or here comes the sun. Not sure it's a guy either.

That was typical dress for 1968. Check out some high school yearbooks for the time period.

Rich T., it's like Six Degrees of "Here Comes The Judge"!

OC Native, I agree with you regarding the costumes; you'll see a lot more from Huck's wonderful archive of wardrobe department photos! I hate the beige things they wear now.

DonaldTDuck, I do think it's a knock-off; doesn't it look like it was printed at some crummy t-shirt stand? I still think it says "Here Comes the Judge", you'll never change my mind!! And it did occur to me that the wearer might be a chick... but I remember plenty of guys in high school with that hair length.

Anonymous, see my last comment! 1968, I would have been a kid in Huntington beach wearing striped pants and hang ten shirts.

Maybe the shirt says "Here Comes The Grump!"

That TV show would have been in production in '68...:)

our tour guide is wearing some odd-looking headgear...looks to me like a Dutch girl hat. i agree about today's costumes. Not whimsical at all :(

I wish they still sold the feathered hats...

Neat pics, glad people are sharing! I too, wish they still sold those hats. I remember how much I wanted one and FINALLY got one when I was 13. Love it!

"Here comes the Judge" might also be a reference to the tricked out version of the 1969 GM GTO car "The Judge". GM "borrowed" it for their slogan (along with "The Judge can be bought")

Storybookland and the tour guide uniforms were always my favorites!
