A Pair From May 1963

Here's a nice Skyway view of Tomorrowland; the sign for the Submarine Voyage is to our left, as is the Douglas Rocket to the Moon. The Douglas paint scheme has grown on me over the years! An ice cream vendor is doing brisk business; the line for the Astro Jets is short, and there is no show going on over at the Flight Circle. You can just see the Flying Saucers in the distance too. All in all this is a fun, busy photo!

The peaceful Snow White Grotto looks great here; the beautiful princess stands near the source of a picturesque waterfall... hey, she actually is a little bit bigger than those dwarfs (contrary to the story that says she is the same size). Daveland pointed out that Dopey originally held a fishing pole, as you can see here. I can almost hear Snow White's girlish voice singing "I'm Wishing"!

"The Douglas paint scheme has grown on me over the years!"

And you were wondering why strangers kept calling you Doug.

It's a warm day on the ol' tarmac. Folks are grouping under the shade, ice cream is selling better than hotcakes, a foreign business man is ascertaining a route to the snowline of the Matterhorn with his binoculars, a couple guys in matching really loudly striped shirts are heading to take a rocket to the moon for relief and incredibly, the Flying Saucers are functioning.

Boy the water in the castle moat is Brown as can be. From the muddy Mippippippi itself? True, Snow is a bit taller but she doesn't exactly dwarf them. Er. Yes that is a very nice pic of this lovely scene. :)

That first pic was JUST what I needed this morning. Thanks, Major.

Chiana, people call me Derwood, not Doug! And we all know how hot it can get in SoCal even in May, so I'm not surprised that folks are looking for a shady spot to stand. Those striped shirts (or coats?) have to belong to cast members, don't you think? And I'm pretty sure that the water in the moat eventually finds its way to the Rivers of America, which is then recirculated back to the Castle.

Connie, you're welcome!

Boy the ice cream vendor looks dapper. He looks like he could be selling band instruments in River City.

It looks like the ice cream guy is doing some moon lighting over in Tomorrowland. Based on how he is dressed, he should be on Main Street selling his ice cream.

On the second picture of the grotto. I hear that Disneyland is going to be taking out the Snow White and the 7 little guys to put in something pirate related. ;)

On a serious note which is reality. Carnation Gardens is closing at the end of April. Construction will begin on the new fairy land next to the castle in May.

The Snow White grotto... the only spot in the park that I have visited on my every trip to Disneyland (that I am old enough to recall).

May 1963 - My first visit to Disneyland, now a faded memory. Never noticed the Douglas logo above the Rocket to the Moon entrance sign before. Very cool. All that’s missing from Snow White Grotto is “Little Squirt” from the Jungle Cruise.

This coming Saturday night will be the last Swing Dancing at Carnation Plaza for the foreseeable future. But they will have dancing in Downtown Disney (near ESPN) on Saturday nights. It is not a fairy land they are building but a replica of a little town outside of the castle from Tangled. Meet n greet with Princesses. Blah.

I want some of those cute umbrella tables/chairs in my yard so when I have a cookout everyone can be shielded from the sun and "other stuff" while eating the hot dogs :--)

Up the street from here, someone has this really old rocket yard toy that must be from the 60s....I so want to ask them if I can have it! I dont think anyone has played on it in years, it has not moved in all the years we have lived here since 1994....it could be the start of my own personal Disneyland!!

@Alonzo - trouble with a capital T that stands for Tomorrowland?

I agree, that first picture is just great... also barely visible in the background is the Disneyland marquee. So much awesomeness in one picture! :D

@Katella Gate. Same here, the SWG has been a special spot for our family since before my time.

It is a must stop every time. No pirates here, but for me, there are plenty of ghosts, and I stop to talk with them.

I think I have something in my eye. Gotta go.

I ALWAYS loved the "Douglas" logo on the Moonliner, for the obvious reason that it is my name, blazoned up the side of that giant phallic symbol, next to the testicular-shaped Moon Ride domes, so it was, in my perverted then-teenage mind, like a giant tribute to my personal junk from Walt Disney. I was crushed when it went away.
