Columbiariffic, August 1958

You know it, you love it... the Columbia! It's brand new here, having opened on a few weeks earlier.

I love this view of the bustling loading dock! The deck of the ship is "standing room only", and you can see why; it's an impressive sight, especially at an amusement park.

Thanks guys, I know that Columbia photos aren't the most exciting things in the world!!

With the vegetation not being as tall as it is today, the Columbia looks HUGE in that first pic.

so pretty. i remember that this was the attraction that i wanted to see the most on our first visit to Disneyland back in 1991, because i sure wish we had one at WDW :)

Beautiful, and packed stemly and sternly!

Yes people couldn't wait to get on her soon as she was available. Hm. Let's rephrase that hehe... People were excited about the Columbia, more than many would be today, having a better sense of history and relation with the people and adventures involved. But as with many others, I'm thrilled Columbia is there today!

Great pictures.

The Columbia is always one of my favorite sites...especially when she's out in the water and taking passengers. :)

Love the first shot. Not only does the Columbia look great, there's good ol' Fort Wilderness in the background.

I never personally saw it surrounded by anything but trees, and the youngest of those would have been 25 on my first visit. The perspective here is totally different, and the fort looks taller. It kind of reminds me of 19th century paintings of frontier forts that are often compressed horizontally, which I'm sure was the intended effect. Interesting to see over time how the carefully-designed forced perspective changed as the trees grew.

Well, I sure got a better response to today's photos than I ever expected. Maybe I am just too jaded and can't see a good photo when it's in front of me anymore! Of course I am always glad when you folks like what you see.
