A Pair From March, 1961
Before we get to the vintage Disneyland pix, let's wish GDB friend Andrew a very Happy Birthday! Sue B. is so good at keeping on top of these things (unlike me), and she sent along a photo from a vintage birthday party. Maybe from the 1980s? 1970s? We'll just have to guess. That white cake looks delicious, my mom used to make a white cake with white frosting and raspberry jam between the cake layers, it was one of my favorites. PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE BOY TO THE LEFT! This family is very lucky, they have an original Cezanne hanging on their wall, they probably got it at a church jumble sale for $2. Thank you, Sue, for providing this photo, and Andrew, I hope you have a wonderful day.

Here's a nice pair of slide scans from March of 1962! Let's begin with this photo of a reduced version of the Disneyland Band, a mere eight guys instead of the 20 (or so) that you might see marching down Main Street with Vesey Walker in the lead. There aren't many clues as to where the band is standing, but I believe that the queue to the left might be for the Midget Autopia. Or is it Storybook Land? I MUST KNOW!
It's always fun to get a look at the Submarine Voyage when the lagoon was drained for maintenance - you can observe so much that is normally hidden beneath the blue water. From this Skyway view we can see how they had to use some intense colors to cut through the blue, like the corals in yellow and vermillion ("vermillion" = "fancy red").
Zooming in, there are some rocks (just above the rim of the gondola) where you can see that some mechanical critters were normally placed, maybe a sea turtle, or an octopus battling a shark.

It’s interesting how by the big 1967 submarine voyage rehab … the lagoons colors became so purple - lavender- pink …. .

No more callers please... we have a winner-! Make that Storybook Land. The white & blue edged roofline seen at the extreme right, just above the scalloped 'fence line' surrounding Storybook Land, is for the Midget Autopia.

These kids remind me of the classic "three monkeys" figurine, only different... Smell no evil, taste no evil, eat no evil. Don't know how the toddler fits in... feel no evil? What is that glop in the amber bowl? It sorta looks yummy, and sorta... not. Lollipop pudding? Moldy apricot pudding? Also not sure what they're gonna put the DelMonte(?) ketchup on. And what does that ribbon/banner on the door say??? I tried flipping every which way but it still made no sense. I don't think it's written in English. The Cezanne original: The frame alone is probably worth a cool million! And Major, you KNOW that if you say to pay no attention to the boy on the left... well that's a double-dog-dare challenge! I for one see nothing wrong with Little Lord Nosepicker.

Eight band members instead of twenty? The Killer Swans ate well that day! (I wonder what the Swans did with the instruments?) The band members all have cockatoos on their hats. I have no idea where the Band is standing, other than Fantasyland, because of the decorative chainlink fencing.
Ha. This colorful jumble reminds of the Magic Rocks kits that grow crystals before your awestruck eyes. I loved those kits! Only here, it's after you've dumped the Magic Liquid off, exposing the crystals. That one mechanical apparatus under the arch looks like it might be a trilobite! Scientists say they are extinct, but here's proof that they are still here! In your face, scientists!

JB, I can't figure out what that silly thing is, on the door to our right, either. I hope someone can figure it out.
I see that we even have cream-cheese-stuffed celery sticks on that table spread. Absolutely nothing kids like -- except for the cake and ketchup. (I hope Andrew is having a better birthday meal, today, than this.)
