Two Beauties
I have two randos for you today, but they are nice randos that help old ladies across the street and open doors for others. First up is this view from February, 1961. If you didn't like crowds at Disneyland, I guess February was the time to go, just look at it. There's maybe a dozen people in all, including those in the Skyway gondolas. Mama mia! The slurry is damp, either from its morning scrub, or possibly from a recent shower (it was Winter, after all). I just kind of like the color and composition in this one, and my favorite orange gondola (yes, I am sure there was more than one) is overhead. Check out those cool drinking fountains!

The camera angle and forced perspective in the 2nd image makes the Bobsled appear to be skirting-along the Monorail beamway-! THAT would certainly be an amusing journey-!

I don't remember seeing those "drinking fountains of the future" before. They look 'neato' (a word of the future) in a retro kind of way. But the apple crates they're using as step stools kinda blows the theme out of the water. I'm with you, Major. The colors in this pic are almost surreal; deep saturation everywhere! The Matterhorn looks extra nice here. And we get a real good view of the Matterhorn's nostrils, all the way through! (Ol' Matt musta blew too hard into a giant-sized kleenex.)
Wow, talk about surreal! The 2nd pic is all that, and then some! It's not every day that we see a butterscotch Matterhorn! (Dusted with powdered sugar.) Up against a clear blue sky. The way the Skyway buckets are lined up side-by-side, the purple and blue Alice leaves and 'spent' dandelion stems. The red Caterpillar and the girl's bright pink hat. Everything contributes to the strange beauty of this photo.

On a serious note. I noticed something in that first pic, that I don't think I've noticed before. That upper part of the waterfall on the Matterhorn doesn't have any rock behind it. I know riders were getting wet from the waterfall that faces the Plaza, and they sealed up those openings. I wonder if that was the same reason for bringing out the rockwork/wall further to the left, on this waterfall. Here's another pic from GDB, showing it open (from 1960):

Here's an even better view of the anemic waterfall, and again, without the rockwork behind it. Why had I never noticed that before?

I want to ride the submarines, but I need a drink of water first. Fortunately, I’m tall enough not to need the orange crate step stools. A nice silver trash can is all ready to accept WASTE PAPER.
Lots going on in Alice pic. I think running bobsleds on the monorail track is great idea. Most of that track is empty most of the time, great way to increase capacity on crowded days, just listen for the air horn and jump!
Young lady is getting excited by caterpillar wrangling, yee haw! Major, is her little brother going to Innsmouth, pining for the sea? I think his eyes bulge a bit.

JB, I think maybe we’ve seen those incredible futuristic drinking fountains before, but these are so technologically advanced that I don’t see how kids would even know how to use them. “I have to know the square root of Pi to the 20th decimal??”. Sometimes the colors in a slide are so appealing, not even necessarily saturated, but they just go together so nicely. I’m glad there are no “stalactites” in the Matterhorn’s nostrils, if you know what I’m saying.

And thank you for the links to the photos (especially not Daveland photos, I don’t want to pay him more royalties!). This is the kind of minutiae that I could hear about all day.

JG, I wonder if those “orange crates” were somehow nailed down? I could see really clumsy kids knocking them over, and hurting themselves. And then I would have to point and laugh even though I don’t want to. I’m only human! I think they should run the Snooty Caterpillars on the Matterhorn track! Now THAT would be fun. I wonder if the girl with the hat hit her mother with the feather?

Major, I myself had never noticed that change, until your post, today. But you have obviously posted pics of it in the past (like the one I linked to), it has just gone unnoticed. Maybe people have commented on the "weak stream" or "anemia" of the waterfall (like Sue did, today) but I don't think anyone had ever pointed out how the rockwork had changed. And I ALWAYS try to link back to your own posts (or mine) whenever possible, before going on to other sources! ;-)

I was actually going to make a remark about the "humiliated" Cary Grant and his family in my comment, along with that link....but I thought maybe I shouldn't get political. Ooops!
I like the look of that Bobsled appearing to be gliding along on the Monorail beam, but if I think too long about it, it gives me horrible "Rocket Rods" vibes of supposedly "high speed" vehicles gliding along the PeopleMover track.
