Two From August, 1970

Judging from this first scan, August 1970 was a very busy time to visit Disneyland. Just look at all those people! I looked to see if something was going on in front of the Castle, perhaps some characters were gathered there, or something. But no, it just appears to be a Summer crowd. I also checked "Jason's Disneyland Almanac" to see if any big events happened around that time, but all I found was the "Country Music Jubilee" on Sundays. The Yippees invaded the park on August 6th of 1970, but it seems unlikely that this was the same day.

Not far from the first photo is the Snow White Grotto, often a nice place to get away from the mob and relax. Listen to Snow White's voice, and the sound of the waterfalls, throw a quarter into the wishing well, and feel at peace.

Wow, more beautifully lit photos! Just like yesterday. Major, you're spoiling us.

The pastel colors of the Castle really look nice here. Not faded, not garish... just right. The Dent, if it's there, is in shadow and can't be seen. Although, some of us with vivid imaginations can probably summon up the ghost of The Dent.

Wonderful play of light and shadow in the Snow White Grotto. The details of the statuary are clearly visible. Poor Dopey... he often gets chopped off from these photos.

Since you have spoiled us, we (me) will expect beautiful pictures like this every day! (Except Snoozle Sunday). Thanks, Major.

Forgive me--I'm not up on the Dwarf's names. Is that Grumpy to the left? Standing in the entrance to the mine shaft? I never noticed that before.

Beautiful picture of the Castle, just as it should look. And what a crowd! There’s a man to the right in what might be a police or security uniform, maybe he is there after the potheads were expelled?

And Snow White’s Grotto! You’re right Major, a quiet peaceful spot most of the time. Rare in today’s Park.

@SteveDG, yes, the dwarf in the mine opening is Grumpy. I’m not sure of the names of all seven, but here goes;

Doc, Dopey, Sneezy, Happy, Bashful, Grumpy, and Sleepy (I think). In the earliest forms of the ancient story, we are not told the dwarves names. This was a Disney innovation that helped make them into characters with faces and clothing as individuals.

Thank you Major, classic Disneyland and GDB today!

Nanook, now I’m wondering if an afternoon parade had just finished, and the folks that lined Main Street and the Plaza were all funneling back into the rest of the park?

JB, it’s just a coincidence that there were two days of bright, clear photos. Of course I wish ALL of my slides were as nice, but amateur photographers run the gamut between “nearly professional” to “what the hell were they doing?”. Yeah, there’s no point in looking for the Dent in that deep afternoon shadow. I never really thought about it, but you’re right, Dopey does often get cut out of photos of the Grotto.

Steve DeGaetano, yes, that is The Grumpster!

JG, the security guard makes me double down on my theory that the first photo might have been taken just as a parade had ended. I hope that they never “improve” Snow White’s Grotto. “She and the Dwarfs should be in a monster truck!”. Though now I admit that I would like that a lot. It was a stroke of genius to make each of the Dwarfs and individual personality, rather than carbon copies of each other. Think how many people had a favorite (usually Grumpy or Dopey, probably)??
