Fun Gals, June 1960

I've been sharing scans from a batch of June 1960 slides over the past few months, but the two I'm presenting today are two of my favorites from the bunch.

It's 10:16 AM, and our group of fun-loving gals has arrived, ready for anything. The two older ladies are clearly related (sisters?), and I'm pretty sure the younger woman is part of the family too.  Many wonderful posters can be seen in the background! On the ticket booth to our left, prices amaze. It appears that just admission for an adult was one dollar. A ten-adventure ticket book was $3.50 for adults, and a 15-adventure book was $4.50. Such a deal!

Next, let's skip on over to Fantasyland, and enjoy a ride on the Motorboat Cruise. I hope the women don't fight over who gets to steer (not that it ultimately mattered). Actually, now that I'm paying more attention, it looks like they might have just returned to the dock, which explains why they look so relaxed. For just a second I thought that a horse was in line in the background.

If they're not related, they definitely bought the same 'model' nose at Noses Я Us-!

Thanks, Major.

"Such a deal!" Yeahbut, ALL THE TICKET BOOTHS ARE CLOSED!!! At least, the two that we can see. I agree, the younger lass must be related because she has the same distinctive nose as the other two. [Nanook beat me to it!] And it looks like June Gloom is in full force on this day.

Ha! It does look like a horse back there! It's rare to see the Motorboat dock and queue. We usually see the boats out on the rough seas and wild, whitewater rivers. It's a miracle that any of the boats make it back to the dock!

Looking forward to seeing more of the Fun Gals. Thanks, Major.

I think Mike has stated in the past, that he has a vintage Motor Boat Cruise sign which reads, "Horses Ride For Free!" ;-)

Thanks, Major.....I like these "Fun Gals" pics.

I'm loving the Motor Boat Cruise pic. I used to love to look for the names on the boats when riding it. I remember some of the boat's names were "Darby O'Gill" and "Shaggy Dog" in reference to their live-action pics from the 1960's. Or boat names like "Snow White" and "Bambi" in reference to their animated features.

Loved that particular area of Disneyland with its waterways with the Monorail, PeopleMover and Autopia traveling overhead in that wonderful multi-layered "Disneyland '59". Thanks, Major.

Definitely a family group, photo by hubby. They are all set for a fun day in the Park. Mom has the requisite giant straw purse containing all the necessary items: Vicks VAP-O-RUB, cough drops, Kleenex tissues, a tiny lace-trimmed hankie, band-aids, arc welder, hydraulic jack, torque wrench, and a volt meter. Granny sensibly has a bag with a strap, but Auntie will regret bringing a clutch. I bet she buys a souvenir tote bag before reaching the Plaza.

I always bemoan the loss of the motorboats. Another quietly enjoyable ride where you could kiss your sweetie in relative isolation, lost to IP hype. Sigh. At least we still have the lake, because taking it out would cost too much. We also see a great view of a bullet can, preferred trash can of Park queues throughout all the lands. I love the idea of the two church ladies fighting over who gets to steer.

Thanks Major, warm memories from these.

Nanook, I am very impressed that you somehow managed to type a backwards “R”!!

JB, I’m sure that on a slow day they did not open all the ticket booths… after all, those CMs were making 50 cents an hour! It’s amazing how often relatives have the same nose, it makes ya think. That is definitely a horse, he walked over from the Pony Farm (not that far away), even a horse needs some fun once in a while. Stay tuned for boats on the rapids (from a different batch of slides)!

Anonymous, once you see him, you can’t UNsee him.

TokyoMagic!, horses don’t carry wallets or purses, so they pretty much have to ride for free.

K. Martinez, I find it especially charming that they used the names of characters now semi-forgotten (except by folks like us), especially Darby O’Gill. I also liked seeing the names on the Storybook Land Canal Boats. Having seen some really beautiful photos of the Motorboat Cruise waterways, I feel especially sad that we no longer have that attraction.

JG, yes, I assume that the pretty young woman had a hubby with her, and he had the camera. I hope Mom’s purse also has some Werther’s candies. The older the better! A clutch bag sounds like a pain in any situation, but especially at Disneyland. I’m not sure if the Motorboats were a victim of Paul Pressler’s Draconian budget cuts, but I kind of think that they were. That guy was a disaster.

Tokyo : it reads “horses under age 4 must be accompanied by an adult “

The MOTORBOAT CRUISE was a victim of two situations: 1) the amount of guests going on it was almost zilch - compared to the cost of upkeep. 2) there were some plans underway to redevelop the area to make way for a LITTLE MERMAID attraction : a version that was ultimately put hold ( this version is featured as a special feature on the first DVD issue of the little mermaid) it would have been duplicated at Disneyland Paris. Two other issues came up including the expense to re -route the Monorail … and a possible location for a directional change tower for a NEW Skyway system that would have dog-legged around the Matterhorn . I guess ultimately both reasons boiled down to cost.
I know I’ve said this before but as big Disney park fans who can’t image any lost Disney attraction not being popular … or at least comprehend it having low attendance. However this has been the case many many times . Adventure thru inner space , AMERICA SINGS , Motor Boat Cruise , Mine Train Thru Natures Wonderland , ….. TOM SAWYER ISLAND , MAIN STREET CINEMA … and combined with other issues get beloved attractions replaced or removed. SNOW WHITES SCARY ADVENTURES came very close to being replaced … and documentation shows in the 90’s the attendance on The PeopleMover was greatly waning…. Which made management open to disasters like ROCKET RODS …
