La Goon, May 1960
I love the old Sub Lagoon, but today's photos aren't the best representations of that feature - the day was gray and kind of dreary, and let's face it, the compositions are fairly "meh" as well. But... we must soldier on.
Does this look like the kind of lagoon a mermaid would live in? No way! Which is why they aren't there. They moved to someplace with bright sunshine (leaving a couple of seashells behind). There are almost no guests in the queue, and two (?) bored CMs. We don't even get a passing Sub or Monorail. In fact, even the Monorail queue (on the top level) appears to have a mere four or five people waiting for the next train. I would appreciate having no lines, but a slightly bigger crowd does add to the energy and fun.
I suppose this one is a little bit more interesting (though even more gray), with some foreground Subs, hatches open to let out the bats (a common problem with all submarines). One good detail - we get a clear view of FUDGIE! It's so good to see him (her?) again! I wonder if the Skyway was down for maintenance? It's unusual to not see one single gondola.

Major-
Dullsville at the Sub Lagoon - even that title seems subpar for [an original Mickey Mouse Club] Hardy Boys Mystery. I do love seeing the original beamway configuration as it leaves the station to head right back around Tomorrowland.
Thanks, Major.
"But... we must soldier on." JB checks to make sure he has a stiff upper lip. (No quivering lips in this outfit!)
I think the mermaids were eaten by orcas... or maybe by Killer Swans. The water looks choppy, must've been windy that day, as well as cold and dreary.
The early days, when the Matterhorn was (nearly) buck naked; bereft of snow. In addition to Fudgie, we can also see the Tuna Boat. Like you said, it's strange to not see at least one Gondola. The shape of the Mountain looks kind of odd from this angle, the top looks too skinny.
OK, maybe not the best shots we've seen, but enjoyable just the same. Plus we finally get to see Fudgie after a long dry spell. Thanks, Major.
Good ol' Fudgie da Whale! But I bet he is missing his ol' pal, Cookie Puss. Unless of course, he ATE his ol' pal, Cookie Puss!
Thanks, Major!
Gray skies, no gondolas, no bobsleds, and almost no people. Feels like Nara Dreamland, post 1983. If you ask me, looks like trouble a-brewin’.
JB, the Killer Swans strike again! Maybe that darker patch of water around the rocks isn’t coral after all…
A dark quiet day to be sure. It’s so overcast, it’s hard to tell what time it is, maybe an early morning? This might account for the lack of skyway buckets? The mermaids are probably in Hawaii.
The submarine CMs are in their Disneyland Navy Uniforms. I’m sure we all remember the sign for the Disneyland Navy Yard visible from the train?
The bats spent the day in the Matterhorn caves, but returned to the subs at night because it was warmer by the engines. I do see one solitary Fantasyland trash can hiding by the rocks on the far side of the lagoon.
These are fine pics, Major. Thank you!
JG
Nanook, only a TRUE Disneyland fan can appreciate the original beamway configuration!!
JB, I saw something about sharks being found bitten in half, and the article supposed that orcas were the culprits, but they did not even mention Killer Swans! In a way, I guess going to the park in May of 1960 would have been nice - no lines - but man, it is kind of grim. At least Fudgie brings a smile to our faces!
TokyoMagic!, I wasn’t sure if Fudgie got along with Cookie Puss. You know how celebrities are. Fickle. Divas! But Fudgie might be one of the good ones, like Tom Hanks.
Chuck, boy oh boy, did I ever want to go to Nara Dreamland! Especially in its heyday of course, but anytime would have been amazing. If only I was more “international” growing up. Do Killer Swans hide beneath the water? One more thing to be worried about.
JG, it really is impossible to say what time of day it was in these pix… that featureless gray sky leaves no distinct shadows. Perhaps the lack of activity everywhere could be chalked up to these being “first thing in the morning”, although I’d think that the park would be ready to go for the guests who got there early. That being said, I have been there for that “magic half hour”, and found that all the rides I wanted to hit were not open yet. Frustrating!
