Frontierland Shore, August 1970

Here are two "OK" views of the Rivers of America, from August, 1970. I might have been in that crowd! First up, we are looking south-eastward, as our photographer (presumably) stood onshore; at first I thought this might have been taken from the top level of one of the short-lived double-decker canoes, but now I don't believe so. The dark water reflects the blue of the sky. Frontierland and a bit of New Orleans Square gleam in the brilliant sun, and a magnolia tree to the right is in bloom (my grandma loved magnolia trees, and they always make me think of her).

Next, I'm guessing that this was taken from the Mark Twain's loading dock, looking past the southern end of Tom Sawyer Island - maybe the photographer was interested in capturing a view of the Haunted Mansion looming over the trees? It had opened the year before, to much acclaim. It's interesting how different the sky and water look from this angle.

Pretty picture! I love it when the water takes on that deep indigo blue color. There used to be a Crayola crayon called "Midnight Blue" (probably doesn't exist anymore) which also had this hue. I don't recall the Frontierland trashcans having that particular color and pattern. We've seen the "X" pattern before, but I don't think it was against a white background. (By the way, the "flying fish incident" pretty much doomed the short-lived double-decker Canoes.)

Are you sure that's the "Haunted Mansion looming over the trees"? It looks like Willy Wonka's factory to me. ;-p Forget "E" tickets, it took a Golden ticket to get in that factory! The Green Slime monster has engulfed the Old Mill!

Long shot views today. Thanks, Major.

I will call the first photo, Dinah, and the second photo, Pauly.

Sorry, I don't have anything else, today!

Shore enough, Major. It was a different, less complex river bank back then.

I know the double decker canoes only lasted one season (engine trouble), but could this pic be taken from a keelboat?

Photo 2 has KS’s keg buoy visible, canoes must pass to the port side (that’s nautical for left), which is also where the fortified wines were kept.

Both are fine pictures, Major. Lots of good memories here, thank you!

JB, I definitely prefer the colors of the first photo vs the second one! That washed-out milky sky overpowers everything. Hm, you don’t think that “midnight blue” crayons still exist? I suppose it’s possible. I heard they got rid of the name “entrail pink”, if you can believe it. I’m sure there is a more official name for those trashcans with the X pattern… there’s at least two color versions of that design, and maybe three? Willy Wonka is not a Disney IP, and you will be hearing from their lawyers!

TokyoMagic!, I can only assume that this is an ILL reference??

JG, a Keelboat? Don’t make me laugh! Why, the very idea is preposterous! I’ve never heard… wait a minute, maybe it *was* taken from a Keelboat. I wonder how often they had to replace the keg buoy? Wood won’t last super long in water. Maybe they had a whole stack of keg buoys backstage. And the person in charge of them? The Keg Boy of course.

Major : the keg buoys are still used today along the same sections of The Rivers of America .

JG, yes you are correct. Stay on the Port side of that barrel...or get a reprimand....or worse! During that date, I was still happily toiling in the Hills Brothers kitchen making lunches with a wonderful group of coworkers with supervisors not much older. August 1970 was a wonderful month which I hold close to me. Cheers to all. I have been tardy handling personal issues which prevent me from participating much. So sorry and thanks to all for understanding. KS

Mike Cozart, are you saying that I should start a business making keg buoys so that I can become RICH??

KS, I can understand why they wouldn't want anybody to pass between the buoy and the island (it's pretty narrow), did anybody actually do that? Maybe on a canoe, when the challenge would be too great to resist. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in the Hills Bros kitchen! Part of me worried that if I ever DID get to work at Disneyland, that I'd be making food, which was not what I wanted. I need to be a star! (joking). Great to hear from you Ken, and definitely take care of what's important, GDB will be here for much more time (I just finished a box of slides, but found that I have three unscanned boxes remaining - that's over 2,000 slides).

Major.......Hellllooooo? My life doesn't revolve around ILL quotes! Okay, maybe it does, a little. But I was just referencing the only two "Shores" I could think of.....Dinah and Pauly. And neither one of them guest-starred on ILL! ;-)
