February, 1977

Going through a large-ish batch of slides from February 1977 (and others), I have a number of pictures showing a pretty mom with her two denim-clad kids. 1977 was just a few years after the U.S. discovered vast denim reserves in Colorado, as you probably recall.

As I may have speculated before, mom might have been in showbiz in some capacity, or else she's just got IT. You know, IT! Some say that I have IT (but I went to the doctor and I don't have IT anymore). Dad took this picture and said, "Just look natural", and this is the best the son could do. You tried, little buddy. I attempted to figure out what the daughter is holding, and it appears to be a record album, but even Photoshop fiddling didn't really help.

Next, mother and daughter exit from Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, and have just passed through HELL - you can see the walls of glistening viscera just behind the girl's head. You know, a few throw pillows would really make that work.

'No cans of Aqua Net were harmed in the shaping of Mom's hair'-!

Thanks, Major.

Hunh. So, denim is mined? Like ore? Or is it more like extracting oil? I always thought denim was obtained from the hides of the Western Denim Jackalope.

My, what big, beautiful eyes you have, Monstro. Actually, I guess it's just the one eye? Pretty sure he doesn't have another one on the side facing away from us. Oh my, the son is... well, I'm not sure. His Lakota Sioux name is "Deer in Headlights". Mom and daughter look really nice. I think the daughter also has "IT". The son has "NOT IT". Looks like Monstro's paint is cracking around his brow.

Interesting, I never noticed before that the Mr. Toad cars use the windshield frame as a "safety" bar; something to hang on to. I think the son was in the car with them but at some point, Sis pushed him out of the car into the dark void. You can tell by the expression on her face. Wow, that "viscera" really does look like... viscera.

A couple of iconic Disneyland photos. Thanks, Major.

There’s that awful ‘saliva drip’ hanging off Monstro’s front teeth, again. A few years back I recall someone [JB?] mentioning it. :op

That mom definitely has IT. She’s very pretty. The son probably had IT, too…it just took him a while to grow into IT.

Thanks, Major. And, yes, you have IT, too.

That looks like the back of the America on Parade LP that the girl is holding

^ Anon., you’re right! You solved the mystery!

the record album is definitely the AMERICA ON PARADE picture disc soundtrack album - we are seeing the backside of the album. Odd it’s not in a bag.

I also recognized that item as the backside of the America On Parade picture disc. And like Mike, I was also wondering why it wasn't in a bag. Maybe she shoplifted it?

Here's that album on ebay. If you click on the photo of the back, you can see that it matches the item in her hand:

America On Parade Picture Disc

Thanks for the 1977 pics, Major!

Of course "Little Buddy" looks a bit petrified, he being eaten by a stinkin' giant whale!!!!
I was going to say it was the America on Parade album, but everybody else beat me to it and I had no clue as to what it was anyway.
You know, they sell Rid-It in spray cans now, so you don't even have to go to the doctor!

Denim is harvested by injecting steam into denim-bearing sands found deep in the earth. In this manner it arrives pre-shrunk for consistent fit. America was the leader in this technology and produced over 90% of the world supply right up through the early 2000’s.

Mom is a pretty lady, (even Monstro is giving her the eye), sis will be some day, and little bro is doing his best.

I love it that you could walk right up to Monstro back then. Nowadays there’s 6 feet of rock, thorn bushes, and a metal fence where they are standing.

Seems like “Stranger Things” ripped off the Toadster. Thaddeus did it first and best!

Great pics, Major! Thank you!

I think we established that's actually Big Sis and not Mom about a month ago. I know Major writes his posts a minimum of two years in advance so I wouldn't expect an update in his commentary.

JG, "Nowadays there’s 6 feet of rock, thorn bushes, and a metal fence where they are standing." You forgot the barbed wire and minefield.

Thanks, Major!

Nanook, I thought maybe Mom had a Toni perm!

JB, denim is an ore, of course. It needs a lot of processing to be useful, but it’s one of our greatest resources. Monstro really does look pretty rough; I’m not sure if these were the days when Disneyland was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but he definitely needed a new coat of paint. His blue is is beautiful, though! I never thought of the safety bars on the “Toad” cars as being the windshield frames, but now that you say it, I see what you mean. Poor little brother, we will miss him.

Lou and Sue, saliva = tree? I don’t remember the conversation that you remember! I have this feeling that Mom was an actress, but it’s only a guess.

Anonymous, aha, now that you say that, I see a “giant head” with a Pilgrim hat! Good one!

Lou and Sue, I knew that it wouldn’t remain a mystery for long.

Mike Cozart, boy, those picture disks were popular, I used to see them everywhere. They must have sold a jillion of them. I agree, the album should be in a bag, is the girl really going to carry it like that the rest of the day?

TokyoMagic!, the girl’s nickname was “Lightfingers Lucy”, she could shoplift ANYTHING. Thanks for the link to the album on eBay!

Stu29573, gosh, everybody knew about the America on Parade album but me. I admit that I never owned one, even though I had many opportunities to buy one. I’m glad to hear that they have over-the-counter cures for IT!

JG, as our denim supplies dwindle, they are figuring out how to squeeze more and more of it out of the earth. It’s no wonder that they needed to move Monstro out of reach of guests, there would be at least a few who would feel the need to scratch their names into him. Rude. Funny, I thought of “Stranger Things” when I saw that viscera too!

Chuck, I know somebody mentioned the Big Sis vs Mom theory, but I still think she’s the mother. I could be wrong though. They should just put 200 feet of “no man’s land” between Monstro and the public!

My vote, if she has a perm, is for a Lilt Home Permanent.

Several of the Disneyland /Walt Disney World picture disc albums were produced by Wonderland Music - Disney/Jack Wagoner production company … manufactured by Disneyland records. Jack - the official voice of Disneyland / WDW had produced many park albums featuring park entertainment groups and parade soundtracks … including the “ MUSICAL SOUVENIR OF WDW’s MAGIC KINGDOM” , “AMERICA ON PARADE” ,”WDW’s ELECTRICAL WATER PAGEANT “ picture discs and albums of THE WDW BAND, THE WDW ADVENTURELAND STEEL DRUM BAND….he had recorded masters for other albums that were never released including THE DAPPER DANS , THE LIBERTY SQUARE FIFE & DRUM, THE PEARLY BAND, THE SAX QUINTET, THE MAIN ST. FIREMAN’s BAND , and others … selections of these albums appeared on the WDW musical souvenir picture disc. Other albums mastered but unreleased included DISNEYLAND HOTEL DANCING WATERS SHOW - in conjunction with MUZAK , a Disneyland / WDW character parade , THE WDW HOOP- -DEE -DOO REVUE.

I think the blonde lady is the children’s aunt … the children’s mother is taking the photos . I can see no wedding rings on the “aunt’s” fingers …

Another Jack wagoner produced picture Disc and announced by Disney was a special DISNEYLAND 25th ANNIVERSARY MAIN STREET ELECTRICAL PARADE disc. But I can find no evidence it was ever released (???) it was announced in Disney News and press releases say “same electronic instruments used to create the bouncy music heard in the Electrical Parade have been used to create synthesized music versions of popular Disneyland music like Enchanted Tiki Room, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN , HAUNTED MANSION , COUNTRY BEAR JAMBOREE, ITS A SMALL WORLD and other favorite Disneyland tunes “ was this music from a Disneyland 25th electrical parade float?? Does anyone know if it was ever issued??

Nanook, was Lilt supposed to be better?

Mike Cozart, I know I’ve seen other Disneyland picture disks… I’ve always liked picture disks in general, but never collected the Disneyland examples. Maybe because they were so plentiful? Also, was there one for the Main Street Electrical Parade? Maybe not. I think the picture disk was perfect for attracting customers, especially at the park. I wonder why those other albums you listed were never released? Was it determined that they wouldn’t sell enough copies? I hope they at least still have all those masters. I figured that Dad took the photos, since the woman appears with the kids in multiple pictures, but you make a good point about a wedding ring. No idea!

Mike Cozart, aha, you answered my question! I could have sworn that I’ve seen an Electrical Parade picture disk, but on the other hand, I wouldn’t bet large sums of money on it. The Disneyland On Parade record is definitely plentiful, I used to see them at collector shows, and had people offer their copies to me (for free), which I politely declined. I know, I’m an ingrate!

Mike Cozart, I see that there are Electrical Parade picture disks on eBay, but they say nothing about being 25th Anniversary disks.

There are 6 variants of the Main Street Electrical Parade 7” picture disc that I am aware of. There is also a It’s A Small World 7” picture disc and a Walt Disney World Electrical Water Pageant 7” picture disc. At one time this album was incredibly RARE …selling 300 to 500 for a nice copy. Years ago at A-1 Record Finders in LA ( long defunct) I found a case pack of the records and paid about 10 bucks a record. I since sold and traded them off … I may have “flooded the market “ lol.
Recently Disney issued a new 7” It’s A Small World “Disneyland 70th edition “ picture disc .
About 4 years ago Tokyo Disneyland released a full 33 1/3 rpm picture disc of It’s A Small World soundtrack . Side a was the original 1983 ride thru and side b featured the new version with Disney characters in it.
And most of you know Disney released a 33 1/3 of ADVENTURE THRU INNER SPACE as a picture disc album. Side a features a restored ride thru soundtrack of the attraction , while side 2 includes all the instrumentals recorded in 1967 for the attraction. I wish more like this would come out.
