Dark Jungle
It's another Snoozer Sunday, and you know what that means; it's time for Major Pepperidge to use up slide scans that have "issues". "What kind of issues, Major P?". Well Timmy, sometimes a slide can be too light. Or too dark! Or a little bit blurry. But when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much... oops, that's from a different talk. I'll tell you when you're older.
Today's scans are TOO DURN DARK, mostly due to backlighting. Those old steam-powered cameras just couldn't handle that brilliant sunshine. Here's an unusual view of the entrance to Adventureland, with the arched sign crafted from bamboo and woven palm leaves. And tusks, bought from the Tusketeria ("Our prices won't be beat!"). The bridge directly in front of us is decorated with shields, spears, and skulls, popularized in "Sunset" magazine. I'm sure the air was filled with the cries of tropical birds, and the smells of wild orchids.
More backlighting! This time we're at the entrance to the Jungle Cruise, with odd paper lanterns, and things like look like hanks of hair. Scalps? I really don't know what they're supposed to be. We get a great look at the Dominguez Palm. The tiki carved from the trunk of a palm tree is in the foreground, he looks a little PO'd. Did you know that if you stretched out Abe Lincoln's face, he would look just like that tiki?

That second shot is cool! I like the lantern shade patterns...reminds me of patterns from the 50s - right out of Jungle Vogue.

I feel as though I'm watching a couple of poorly-done day-for-night shots, with too much light in all the wrong places - including shadows in the first image. If it was good enough for Hollywood, why not here on GDB-??

These pictures are dark and backlit, but it’s a good kind of dark and backlit. It ramps up the sense of foreboding you should have in the dangerous wilds of Adventureland. Adequate lighting is just mollycoddling the tourists.
The best elephants are from Alabama where their Tuscaloosa.

Nanook, YES, they really do feel like day-for-night shots. Even as a kid I thought that day-for-night was so weird, and rarely successful. I understand why they had to do it, but it looked crummy.
JB, it’s SO weird, I got your comment in my email at least six times, but I don’t know why it doesn’t show up in the actual comments. I do apologize, I just don’t know what to do about it.

No idea on the "hanks of hair" thingys. They don't appear to be scalps. We know that Disney is pretty thorough with its research, so I would guess that the hanks are something actually seen in traditional African or Polynesian culture.
That tiki does resemble Mr. Lincoln. I wonder if it has a mole on its cheek? We can't tell because the photo is too dark and the tiki is presenting the wrong side of its face to us.

Well, it looks like my original comment finally 'took' this time. It posted once before, too. But it then disappeared when I left the site and came back. It's one of my shorter comments, too. So being too long couldn't have been an issue. And, to Chuck, there's nothing in it that looks like a hyperlink that I can see.
I had some TV/DVR trouble with Comcast/Xfinity last night. They're also my ISP, so I wonder if that was it?
Anyway, it seems to be working now. I hope the comment was worth waiting for. :-D

I remember watching a colorized version of the B&W movie Topper with my dad in the era when Ted Turner was doing that to his library. There was a day-for-night scene and they just gave up on colorizing it, apparently figuring that colors are muted in low light. I'm glad those colorized versions have disappeared.

You give my memory far too much credit for remembering that factoid. But the info out there seems to agree the ice cream selection was 'fixed' at (2-scoops each of) chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry - pleasing most folks - and certainly me.
