In Adventureland, 1960s

Say, who wants to go to Adventureland? I hope you all raised your hands. These are undated, but I think it's safe to say that they are probably from around 1966 or 1967. What do you think?

The first scan is of this happy couple, waiting to board their trusty naphtha-fueled jungle launch. I'm not sure if they'll make it on the Magdalena Maiden, but the wait shouldn't be too much longer. They've had their shots, and the lady has some quinine tablets in case of malaria, so they're as ready as they'll ever be.

Next, we're in the pre-show area for The Enchanted Tiki Room. The lady from photo #1 found a seat, but who knows where her husband is... probably looking for a Dole Whip, even though they don't exist yet. The trash cans in this area are particularly striking, I wonder if any of them ever wound up on the collector's market?

After Tomorrowland, Adventureland was my favorite . There was just something cool about being in a jungle/tropical environment with drums beating and animal noises abound. The first pic is a nice shot of a couple having a good time.

Thanks, Major.

Major-
Although the lady in the first photo is certainly no slave to fashion, it's the little dude already seated on the Magdalena Maiden who's grabbing my attention. He's years-ahead with those cool red shades-!

And the second photo merely goes to cement her standing in the 'anything goes' dressing category, as we can now see her purse. I know... it's all about what's practical. No doubt she's wearing very sensible shoes.

Thanks, Major.

In the second scan, lower left, I LOVE that pink hat made out of cotton candy!

For all you Jungle Cruise fans, THIS is for you. The Jungle Cruise is the second ride, in this video; you can jump (click) ahead to it and skip the train ride, if you wish. I really enjoy this skipper's spiel and style. (I have to thank Dr. Goat for introducing me to "Fresh Baked"!)

Thanks, Major!

Is that possibly Queen Elizabeth in the green and white coat? (Major you can skip reading the rest of my comment, here. Just move ahead to the next person's comment. I don't want to upset you.)

To all you ILL fans: Don't you find it amazing that Lucy went to visit Queen Elizabeth over 65 years ago - and that same queen is still sitting on the throne?!

TokyoMagic! said...

Sue, that does look like the Queen. This would have been 10 years after that I.L.L. episode. I wonder if she was still making Prince Phillip go outside and rustle the garbage cans at Buckingham Palace?

Nanook, that kid in the J.C. boat is getting ready to whip it! Whip it good!

TokyoMagic! said...

Nanook, actually, that kid probably thinks he's "Tarzan Boy," He's enjoying "jungle life, on his own and far away from nowhere."

It's a parade of 1960s textiles! Mrs. Catseye is overprepared because she misread "Magdalena Maiden" as "Malaria Maiden." Also, she got a little confused about the Cambodian Temple being a mosque, and therefore full of mosque-itos.

Chuck said...

Her husband is absent from the second photo because he is being a gentleman, standing so the ladies can have a seat.

The garbage can is amazing. I'll bet Prince Philip wouldn't mind rustling around in that rubbish bin.

Oh, and thanks, TM! - now I have an uncontrollable urge to buy Listerine.

Chuck, the "new" Cool Mint flavor, right?

Exactically!

K. Martinez, one of my favorite things (even though it seems very minor) was the scene on the Jungle Cruise just as the boat left the dock. There is mist in the air, the busy dock is left behind, and our boat continues forward as the jungle gets thicker and the sunlight is filtered through the trees. It’s a great beginning!

Nanook, I think we’ve seen other people wearing similar “Devo-esque” shades, those had to have been sold at the park! He’d be right at home in a John Hughes movie. The lady’s purse can also be used to play a game of checkers or chess (game pieces in the purse) if necessary!

Lou and Sue, that hat is definitely a souvenir, I know we’ve seen those in previous photos. Meanwhile, look at that other lady’s green dress, very mod. It’s people like that “Fresh Baked” dude that make me realize that I am pretty low on the scale of Disneyland fandom!

Lou and Sue, SIGH.

TokyoMagic!, I don’t get the jokes, so I guess I’ll just move on.

TokyoMagic!, jeez, “Tarzan Boy”, I haven’t thought of that song for about 30 years!

Melissa, there are definitely some impressive colors and patterns. which is one of the reasons that I thought these photos might be from around 1967. They could be a little later than that I suppose!

Chuck, I like to sit on a bench and take up as much room as possible. “I got here first!” I like to remind everyone who gives me a dirty look. Who knew that Prince Phillip was so interested in trash cans?

Chuck and TokyoMagic!, I am pretty sure that those Listerine commercials were created by Pixar, long before they made “Toy Story”!

Nifty photos. Lots of good vibes.
Do dig that trashcan. They don't have an example of it on Magicaltrash. That lady on the right, in the blue shirt with the dark vest, looks like she has cat ears on.
Lou & Sue, You're welcome. David on Freshbaked is a bonifide Disney maniac. Love his videos.
Thanks Major, cool pics.

I guess my Mom was no slave to fashion either, since the lady in photo one reminds me of her very much. Mom had the same glasses and the same sweater, while the wild paisley (?) blouse is something Mom would have liked, but I don't recall her having any like it in color.

Mom would have been relieved to reach this point since she could stop worrying about snakes in the thatched roof over the queue, and she would have had quinine, kleenex, Vicks Vap-O-Rub, Tums, aspirin, sun tan cream, two hankies, a pack or two of soda crackers, and sunglasses in the giant bag.

While you are all admiring the (admittedly admirable) trash can, I am going to make off with the tiki up on the porch.

As for QEII in the green, I read a story about the real Queen taking a motor trip somewhere and she wanted cough drops or some sundry. The caravan stopped in a little village and she insisted to go in the shop alone to buy what she needed. The clerk behind the counter said, "Beg your pardon, Mum, but you do look very like the Queen." Upon which, Her Majesty replied "How very reassuring."

Thanks for exceptionally good pics today, Major, really brings back the GOOD memories.

It looks like a magnificent day to be at Disneyland. Everyone looks so happy and stylish! Amazing how some of the fashion prints can compete with that trashcan.

The young lady in the fuchsia blouse to the right of the first photo is particularly attractive. Perhaps she had a modeling career and eventually got an acting role on 'Love American Style'.

If that's Queen Elizabeth in the green coat, then Princess Margaret is right above her in the pink ruffled top.

Everyone in both photos looks like they are having a good time. Even Her Majesty seems to be enjoying Disneyland on this fine day. "We are amused." Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, but she doesn't have a lot to say. Sorry, I couldn't resist that one. Now I'm gonna watch Sue's entire video. Thanks Major.

Major, you're at the top of our list!

Andrew said...

^Definitely!

On second thought, you have a point, Major... someone who writes 5000 blog posts is a pretty "low-scale" Disneyland fan compared to the all-powerful YouTube. Just watch 100 videos and you'll know everything about anything! At least I think it's something like that...

Maybe I'm the biggest Disneyland fan in Western Pennsylvania who's never been there?

Chuck said...

Andrew, I don't understand - how can you be in Western Pennsylvania if you've never been there?

Anonymous said...

Major, Don't even go there. Freshbaked David lives in Anaheim, and has had an annual pass for probably most of his life. If I remember correctly, he is in his late 40s (a spring chicken), and lives his life constantly involved with everything Disneyland.
He has been online with Freshbaked since 2012 I think. You've got about 6 years on him. He seems like a great guy, but as far as Disney fandom, as Aragorn would say, you bow to no one.

Nanook said...

@ Chuck-
I believe "in Western Pennsylvania" is a dependent clause, so the sentence is actually correct as written. (On the other hand... don't stop having fun with us all).

Major, agreeing with Dr. Goat here. GDB stands alone.

Thanks for hosting our conversations, observations and reminiscences. Our lives would be poorer without you to bring us together.

DrGoat, I may need to contact Steve Tanner over at “Magical Trash” and ask him if he wants to use that photo on his site! It’s so funny the way I always felt like I was way overboard in my Disneyland fandom, only to discover that there were plenty of people who were ten times more enthusiastic as I am.

JG, I don’t know about being a slave to fashion, but those very bold, colorful prints were definitely fashionable in those days. I seem to remember my mom wearing patterns like that. Was it Norma Kamali who made stuff like that the thing? Unless my mom’s purse spilled, I didn’t really think about what was in it, other than useful nickels and dimes. But it did seem to hold everything she needed! I figure it’s not necessary to say that I’d want the tiki, it’s just the thing for my bathroom. Nobody will loiter with that fierce fellow glaring at them. I would love to believe that Queen Elizabeth would be willing to go into a shop on her own! “I need a Snickers, chill here, I’ll be back in a minute. Anybody want a Slurpee?”.

Omnispace, yes, it really does look like a wonderful day (and time) to be at the park, it’s one of the reasons I love to look at vintage slides of Disneyland. I certainly noticed the tall young lady in pink; and I just scanned a few slides in which it is clear that the photographer was more interested in the pretty girl walking away from him than anything else in the park. Princess Margaret? She liked dating interesting men!

Jonathan, I wonder if Queen Elizabeth would have fun at Disneyland? What does she enjoy doing? Maybe she’d be more of a Six Flags kind of gal.

Lou and Sue, aw, thanks!

Andrew, I’m especially considering the people who went to the park multiple times a week, for years and years. I don’t think I could do that, or would want to anyway. There are other things to do. Some videos are informative, but I do find that most recycle the same “facts” over and over. I no longer know the park like I used to, but I’m OK with that! Since you are from Western Pennsylvania, do you speak with a thick cowboy accent?

Chuck, haven’t you ever heard of astral projection?

Anonymous, who knows, maybe if I’d lived in Anaheim for most of my life I would be just as passionate as Mr. Freshbaked. Except for some formative years in Huntington Beach, I’ve always lived just far enough away to make frequent visits a hassle. Then again, I listen to podcasts hosted by people who live in far-flung places such as San Jose and Seattle, and they still managed to go multiple times a year, so I guess I’m just making excuses. Still, I appreciate your very kind words!

Nanook, if people are paying attention to proper grammar, I am doomed.

DrGoat, OK!

Lou and Sue, yes, I am pretty sure that’s what Andrew meant, and I’m pretty sure Chuck was just messing with Andrew!

JG, thanks very much! I can’t deny that many of the great old Disneyland blogs stopped posting long ago, and I’m still around, so that’s something!

Haha, Chuck, you're the best. :-p

I can't tell if you're kidding, Major! Pittsburgh Dad is a YouTube channel that just makes fun of Pittsburghers and their accent. I definitely say "Picksburgh," but my voice doesn't sound like Pittsburgh Dad's!

Dean Finder said...

Major, you are correct. Pixar made that Listerine ad in the early days when they were trying to sell animation hardware to movie studios, and made some ads to pay the bills. They later realized that they could make movies themselves.
