Boring Views, 1956

It's another sleepy Sunday, and that means it's time to unload some boring images. Or maybe they're OK. It's subjective!

I'd say this is the better of the two, with a view of the old Indian Village as seen from the deck of the Mark Twain. It's 1956, so the berm still looks rather raw and barely landscaped - still, that hill to the left must be 40 or 50 feet tall. That's a lotta dirt!

The Indian Chief appears to be talking about the passing steamboat, while a mom and two young watch it pass.

Another view from the Mark Twain looks across the river to the newly-opened Tom Sawyer Island. Those shrimpy trees would grow much taller in just a few years, helping to make the island feel like it had always been there.

Major-

I believe that lovely plywood box to the left of the Indian Chief is housing a PA system; as he seems to be holding a microphone - the wire of which is disappearing into one of the holes in that box.

In the 'good news department' of those "shrimpy trees", we can spy the workings of telephone poles and their attendant wires-! (A partial crowd-pleaser to be sure-!) TSI really does look a bit spartan at this point. What fun to explore, though, in its formative years-!

Happy Sunday, Major.

1st scan: What are the people, in the back, looking at? Does anyone know? (Seriously)

2nd scan: The river looks so much wider, with the little trees.

Thanks, Major!

That second pic is making me wonder when Castle Rock was built. I feel like I should know the answer to that, but I don't!

I don't see these as "boring" - I'd say "peaceful," "tranquil," or "restful." And I'd be happy to step into either of them.

Sue, those people may be looking for the amphitheater seating for the Indian Dance Circle. Unfortunately, they're about six years early.

TM!, Castle Rock was thrust from the Earth by massive tectonic forces in 1957. Apparently, Disneyland brought out Mother Nature's creative side, as these same geologic processes also created Tom's Treehouse and the Pontoon Bridge at the same time.

The second pic makes the berm look like a little mountain range from a distance, appropriate for Frontierland. Now it would just be a 50-foot tall inflatable if it was to be built. ;)

Nanook, that plywood box is interesting. And so is that drum-like thing with the four black hose-like things springing out of it, in front of the chief.

Chuck. :o)

Andrew, that does look like a mountain range.

Nanook, yes that has to be the PA system; After hours he liked to sing Sinatra songs. So funny, I never notice telephone wires, who knew that they had such fans.

Lou and Sue, I have no idea what those people are gathered around! And you’re right, the river does look bigger in general!

TokyoMagic!, I thought Castle Rock was built in 1956, but that’s mostly an assumption on my part. I can’t believe that I don’t know the answer.

Chuck, they are certainly restful! Damning with faint praise? I’ll bet those people are looking at a bug. So was Castle Rock built in ’57? I can’t tell if you are completely joking or not.

Andrew, I think that the berm resembling mountains was intentional, there are other angles where one could just see them as low, distant mountains. It’s pretty ingenious.

Lou and Sue, I was wondering what the function of those curved things could be! I honestly can't think of why they should be there.

Well - Daveland to the rescue, again... HERE'S ANOTHER VIEW of that 'drum-like thing'. In this view, from September, 1959, the Chief is continuing with his Sinatra singing session. It certainly does resemble a drum - but far from being an expert, I can merely posit guesses: An early, single-man hovercraft-? A cleverly-disguised sub woofer for that full, high-fidelity vocal sound-?

Major, my sense of humor does me in again. I'm beginning to understand why my wife thought I was joking when I proposed.

All three of those structures appear on the 1957 TSI map but not the 1956 map, so I'm extrapolating that they were added in 1957 (although I suppose they could have gone in in late '56).

Chuck, WHO(?!) did you propose to?? I'm surprised your wife wasn't MAD at you when you did that!! ;)

Sue, you make an excellent point...for clarification, I was proposing to my future (and current, and only) wife.
