More Improved Rescans!

It's time for more rescans, each with an added drop of golden Retsyn! ("What the hell are you talking about, Major Pepperidge"?).

Both of the old scans were originally posted way back in 2008, and both were taken aboard the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train (Nature's Wonderland was still a few years away). As you can see, the sky has a strange hue (I blame UFOs) and the rest looks like it needs a good scrubbing.

The rescan & restoration looks much sharper, less dark, and has better overall colors. I love this unusual view, and I love the old trains with their dark green paint scheme.

I should mention that these were hand-dated "7-12-58", which allows me to do one of my favorite things - look up that date in Jason's Disneyland Almanac for some specific details! July 12th was a saturday, and the park was open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 AM; this was one of the famous "Date Nites"; the high temperature was 81 degrees, and attendance was a solid 32,679 - pretty busy for those days.

Next is this shot taken as the train entered the Rainbow Desert, full of so many familiar sights, like the anthropomorphic cacti, and the colorful paint pots. Like the previous old scan, this one is very dark and murky.

Ah, this is more like it! In the distance we see the C.K. Holliday, no longer pulling the old freight cars (notice the striped awnings).

SO... I had a busy weekend... I composed a ton of blog posts, and now have 30, finished and ready to publish! If I am abducted by a UFO tomorrow, you will still have new posts every day until February 24th. I'm not saying they are great, but dammit, there are a bunch of them.

Major-

"Don't broadcast bad breath". Heavens, no-! That's why I always use Clorets - with "Chlorophyl and Retsyn". And as a result my breath is always "kissing sweet", in case anyone is keeping score. Leave it to The Major to weave-in a reference to Clorets (mints or gum), right here in the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train-! (Perhaps Retsyn was what was being 'mined' all along...)

As much as I like the sprightly, yellow Mine Train cars, there's much to be said for the more staid, dark green early model. I was hoping to spy a glance at some inappropriately-placed telephone poles, but not this time, evidently.

Thanks, Major for more rescans - or is it now Retscans-?

@ TokyoMagic!-

I think we're giving too much free advertising to Madison Ave: Certs is a candy mint. Certs is a breath mint. STOP - you're both right.

Actually, mentioning a "golden drop of Retsyn", I believe The Major was referencing Certs (weren't you-?), as apparently only they used "a golden drop" of the stuff. But both Certs and Clorets employed "...a mixture of copper gluconate, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, and flavoring". Yummy. I guess Retsyn really does sound better.

Thank you Major for assuring us of at least one more month of GDB!

We know that it's not guaranteed. It's hard to fathom that you've been posting every day for almost 10 years now...wow!

We'll all be on the lookout for UFO's tomorrow, they don't stand a chance...

As a kid, there were two things I always wondered about. What was Retsyn.....and who was Rula Lenska? Now I finally have the answer to at least one of those questions. Thanks, Nanook! ;-)

You are correct major. Rumor has is 07/12/58 was the date of the mass UFO sighting over Anaheim. The ship (from the planet Retsin)crashlanded in the painted desert and it's pilot (Aksnel Alur) changed her name to Rula Lenska and the rest is history.

If you don't believe me just ask Scully and Mulder...now that they are back.

Nice rescans, keep em'coming. Thanks

Or should I say Retscans (retscan is a copyrighted trade mark of Major Peppridge Enterprises).

Today's photos suggest something I had never thought about before. Did the mine train go clockwise through the desert before the Nature's Wonderland facelift, in which the train goes counterclockwise through the desert. The appearance of the paint pots on the train's right make me think this was the case.

Hi Major,

Beautiful re-scans! Glad to hear about the 30-day supply of blogs!

Quick correction: In 1958, there were only three train sets--the yellow Retlaw 1 passenger cars, the brand new Excursion train, which has clerestory-style roof and no striped awnings, and the freight train. The red and white striped awnings in the photo indicate--as they still do to this day--that the train is indeed the modified freight train, otherwise known as "Retlaw 2."

Nanook, actually I had forgotten about Clorets! Did they have Retsyn too? As a kid I would sometimes buy Certs just because I liked the minty candies. Nine year olds don’t care about their breath, ha ha! Now that you mention the telephone poles, I realized that Ken Martinez is going to be so disappointed today.

TokyoMagic!, this explains why I am now charging twice as much for people to read GDB!

Nanook, “It’s a floor wax!”. “It’s a dessert topping!”.

Nanook again, yes, I was thinking Certs, but like I said earlier, maybe Clorets was made by the same company? I just remember watching Certs commercials as a kid, and wondering what that mysterious “Retsyn” was. *BING!* I always did like gluconate.

walterworld, the “posting every day” didn’t start until 2010, but even so, I only missed about a dozen days in the previous four years.

TokyoMagic!, do you remember Johnny Carson’s running bit, “Who the hell is Rula Lenska?”. I still remember those ads and thinking the exact same thing.

Alonzo, I wouldn’t mind those UFOs so much if the aliens would just warm up those darn probes. I was so excited for the return of “The X-Files”, only to see headlines that report that it isn’t very good, which makes me sad.

Alonzo, “retscans”, I like it.

Anonymous, yes, the Mine Train did go counterclockwise through the desert!

Steve DeGaetano, I should know that, having just finished reading the new edition of your book! Thanks for the correction… the train is distant and indistinct, so I jumped to a conclusion.

Major, I didn't know about Johnny Carson's running bit, but I wondered the exact same thing. From the way they presented her in the commercial, it seemed like we were supposed to know who she was. Whoever she is/was, I still think of her whenever I give myself a V05 hot oil treatment.

So cool to see the two trains pass by each other. Thanks, Major.
