Frontierland, April 1963
Sometimes you'll take a photo of your kid, and it will turn out to be a treasure to be shared among all of your friends and relatives. And other times it'll turn out like this. It's not her fault, she was caught off-guard, squinting into the sun, pigtails so tight that she can't think straight. The bangs mean mom cuts her hair. She's somewhere in Frontierland, back when they had room for things like random patches of grass. It looks like a dirt path was added, probably where people were cutting through anyway... maybe it would eventually be paved.
This looks like an off-the-cuff shot taken as the Mark Twain was about to get underway. With the flags and the crowds, it's like a scene from a movie.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Melissa has to say about our little gal in the first pic.
Second pic: That lady is swimming 'up stream.'
Major-
"... pigtails so tight that she can't think straight. The bangs mean mom cuts her hair".
Actually, 'tightening' "Susie's" pigtails is how she sets the 'trim' on her bangs. Pretty clever, Mom-!
That certainly is quite the crowd packed-in like sardines standing by the mark Twain/Columbia dock. I wonder what was happening over by the entrance to the Golden Horseshoe - perhaps a 'staged' shoot-out...
Thanks, Major.
We saw 'little Susie' along with her uncontrollable bangs back on the September 8th post.
Miss "Not Her Fault" has white bows on her boa constrictor pigtails. It makes them look like those 'booties' that fancy chefs use to cover the ends of poultry drumsticks, crown rib roasts and lamb chops. Not sure if that means she's ready for the oven or just about to go in. The boy behind her in the panda-skin sweater didn't fare much better; schlumping along, with pretty much the same facial expression as the girl. His hair is too short for pigtails though. There is a white ostrich plume on an Alpine hat that takes up most of the left edge of the pic.
Looks like an awful lot of people in that crowd! Are they just walking through Frontierland? Maybe they're in a hurry to get into the queues for Pirates and the HM... which won't exist for another six years, give or take. These same people will line-up along Main Street five hours before a parade is scheduled to begin. Up on the second deck of the Mark Twain, a guy in a white jacket is holding something dark in his hand. It looks like a blow dryer. I suppose it's a camera of some sort? Maybe it's a radar gun.
Sue, after reading your comment, it only took me a half second to spot the lady swimming upstream... she doesn't stand a chance!
Nice people-watching pics, Major. Thanks.
^ I meant to say, "just coming out of the oven". :-\
