Snoozle Cruise, August 1970

I apologize in advance for today's Mega-Snoozles. They might not even be safe to view for some people, due to their soporific effect. If you are viewing this blog while driving a commuter train, please stop reading!

If I'm not mistaken, this hippopotamus was photographed in mid ear wiggle. And that means something. BUT WHAT? He's hungry? He wants you to scratch his chin? Is that how hippos show that they are happy? I've forgotten.

Yes, you knew there would be another picture, either of elephants, or of crocodiles. These three scaly fellows guard a temple with an idol (a monkey-god). Thinking about trying to steal the idol? Think again! There's also a yucky spider, he'll bite you GOOD.

Ear wiggling is how hippos say "hello". They can't wave "hi" with their hands because they don't have hands, per se, so they wave their ears. When you think about it, it all makes perfect sense. Only... don't think about it too hard... you'll hurt yourself. I am of two minds when viewing this hippo. On the one hand, it looks kinda fake; sorta washed out and lacking in textural detail. On the other hand, it looks remarkably real! Especially around the eyes, and the overall shape. Oh dear, I'm thinking about it too hard and now I feel a pain ricocheting around inside my cerebral cortex.

Hmm, the crocs suffer from the same malady as the hippo; sorta real, sorta fake. But I learned my lesson from the hippo photo; I won't think about it too hard. I will say that the animatronic water looks very real here! Just the right shade of 'pea soup green'. And just the right amount of opacity versus transparency. Oh, oh... I'm starting to feel that pain again. [Don't think! Don't think! Don't think!]

Most of the things in Disneyland are that way. If you overthink it, the illusion falls apart. Much better to not think too hard, and enjoy the Park.

Today's Snoozles sort of snuck up on me. When I clicked on GDB, I had forgotten this was a Sunday post and was startled to be confronted by Snoozles! Thanks for the warning at the top of the post, Major. And thanks for the Snoozles.

You want to know why I like GDB so much? It isn't ONLY because of the wonderful vintage photos. And it isn't ONLY because of the witty narration that accompanies the photos. It's because you, Major, always "learn me" new words. I had to look up "soporific." I thought it might mean "containing spores" and "causing mold or mildew growth." You know....as in, The cole slaw at Pacific Ocean Park was soporific!" ;-)

Thanks Major, for both the Snoozles and for echukatin' me!

The photos are safe for me to view today, since I am not going to operate a motor vehicle.

I feel kinship with the hippos because I wiggle my ears when they itch (my ears, not the hippos). The actions are the same but the motivations are completely different.

My grandad only visited the Park once, I think it was 1968, I know we rode the Pirates ride. He was convinced the JC critters were real, especially the crocodiles.

Tokyo, GDB is well known for the broad and technical lexicon employed in the posts, thanks to the Major, this blog is highly edumacational.

Thanks Major!
