Snoozers
Here's a trio of Snoozers for your Sunday. Let's start with this 1950s shot of the Mark Twain, adorned with patriotic bunting (and lots of it). A Canoe passes in the foreground. This would be a perfectly acceptable photo, if it wasn't for that double-exposed portion to the right.
No flash photography, do you hear? I'm not kidding! And it's for your own good too, because those flash photos aren't going to turn out very good. Like this one, taken on one of the drops on Pirates of the Caribbean.
I wish this picture of Br'er Bear hanging out in the Pirate Arcade was in focus, because it would be another good one, otherwise. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

In the thumbnail of the first image I thought the double-exposed part was just puffy white clouds. There's a whole lot of people on the Mark Twain. On the upper deck there are two ladies with 'lampshade' hats, and two men with black Alpine hats(?). The lady in the checkered outfit is sitting precariously on the railing. She looks like duck food to me!
There's not much to be gleaned from the Pirates pic. Anybody know what that crumpled black thing is on the left wall?
Most of the Br'er Bear pic is in focus. The big fella must have been dancin' around to cause him to be blurry. IT'S HIS FAULT! We can also see the CM's eye-hole in the Bear's neck. Or maybe he had a tracheotomy. My, that's an interesting trashcan.

I think Sue is right! You can see a ghost image of the flank of the Main Street omnibus. Above the ad cards appears to be a hanging banner for THE ART CORNER!!
While that photo of the Pirates of the Caribbean drop won't win any prizes, it's my favorite today. Such a rarity. Thanks, Major.
The Pirate Arcade pic shows the side entrance/exit door at the top of those steps in the background. The archway just outside the door is the exit from POTC. You used to be exit the attraction and make an immediate right turn into the arcade. They sealed up that door, when the arcade space was transformed into the Pieces of Eight shop. Those steps are still there, but if you go up them, it's just a dead end at the top. So typical of Disney.
That POTC "drop" pic is a hoot! I love it!
I love that flume shot! I always wondered what that looked like. Note the multiple guide rails - very different from your typical log ride. Of course, POTC isn’t your typical log ride. In fact, there’s nary a log to be seen, ‘less’un you count the Captain’s Log. Hmmm…never thought about that before. I wonder what stardate POTC takes place in?
I think the verdict is unomnibus on the double exposure.
Chuck made me go back and take another look at the "flume shot." HE MADE ME, I tell ya! Hey, I wanted to see the multiple rails. (Don't touch the third one....especially when it's wet.) But upon a second look at that pic, I see that a rider has lost their cell phone at the bottom of the hill (right side). Or maybe it's their TV remote control? Or their Star Trek communication device?
And upon a second glance at that last pic, the arcade game with the name "CAP'N ___CK", makes me think of Jimmy Kimmel's "Unnecessary Censorship" segments.
Awesome photos today. The abundance of peoples on the Mark Twain makes me think "what exactly IS the capacity on the Mark Twain?" and ...was the capacity ever reached? Besides some opening day 'nannigans? I don't really mind the ghosting in the shot, and often wondered "what the freak happens in the camera to do that?" The bunting on the Mark Twain is interesting as well. I have never seen those "bow tie" types of bunting prior to this photo. Canoes are a bonus shot, with the authentic employee- I'm wondering when the costume went from feathers to coon skin? This shot could be replicated today, which is a nice thing- with some minor amendments. The flume on pirates is also my favorite shot. So very familiar to me, with instant visceral reaction and sense memory scents. That particular spot is very sensorial in all aspects. Mixed with some light adrenaline from the fall. There is a very "cold" feeling in this area too, the cool lighting on the caves mixed with the splashes from getting a little wet, and the subsequent waves caused by boats behind you. And the blasting AC. Brer Bear. Let's put the largest character costume we have, and have him go into the smallest space in the park. Why not! I liked the Pirate arcade, but always got a little claustrophobic in there. I would make my "Pieces of Eight" coins (wish I could find them) and move on to the Haunted Mansion. I am surprised they don't exit guests through this merchandise location now as the "exit" to the ride. I get a little grumpy with "exit through the gift shop". I get it...but I do not have to like it. The trash can is interesting and unique, and the familiar color of the "go away brown" of the change machine takes me back decades. You would have to make your dollar bills so perfect for the machine to accept them. They had to be placed on a little tray and slid in, rather than being sucked up by rollers to be rejected. There seems to be a lot of technology in those change machines. Probably under appreciated, and now...possibly gone? I'll have to do some research. Seems that the paint/sign shop would want to make them prettier too. Did you know that Captain is actually spelled "Cap'n"? Cap'n Crunch we SAY Captain Crunch...but he is Cap'n. Like the arcade game in this photo. Cap'n Crunch is most delicious when served with half and half and even more sugar on top. The roof of my mouth feels differently, and most of the time takes about a week to recover. Thanks for the oh so non snoozy snoozers this am Major!
The Mark Twain is “gunnels awash” with happy passengers.
I think KS described the MT capacity once, as well as the consequences of guests rushing the exit. No bueno.
I’m in agreement with the POTC shot greatness, this is the kind of forbidden trivia that only GDB offers. I feel a little bad trading on the photographers shame for breaking the rules, but he preserved some valuable hidden info along with a view of what may be a 5-1/4 inch floppy disk on the shoreline. I can still recall my Mom’s shriek as she went over this for the first time.
That has to be the finest trash can I’ve ever seen. Has to be One-Of-A-Kind. IYKYK.
we have established these swinging lid tent shaped cans in queues and tight spaces, and this one is a work of art. I sure miss the Pirates Arcade, I think of it when passing the blocked doorway, now lost to accessibility rules. We can see the stairs beyond.

Yesterday was a travel day for me, so I’ll just leave my snow comment here. I lived in snow country for 10 years, and that was enough. I still enjoy snowshoe hiking, but you can keep the rest of the shoveling, scraping, etc.

TM!, my apologies. Sometimes my psychokinetic powers get away from me. It’s my burden to bear.
JG, while reading your snow comment it occurred to me that the best place to be in the snow is at a resort that’s prepared for it and used to dealing with it. You can do all of the fun stuff in the snow - snowshoe hiking, downhill and cross-country skiing, hitting Junior Barnes in the side of the face with a slush ball - without being responsible to clear any of it away. The best of all possible worlds.
I was late to yesterday's party and dropped off my snow comments there except one more...it looks great coming down until you see your car disappear...and it's not in a drift!
That said, I wish I recall the maximum number of guests. But it was controlled at the turnstile. And It does appear that the MT is leaning to starboard. Yep...when everyone heads to port before arrival, it was be a rather wet adventure. We'd announce to the guests, via the mic in the Wheelhouse, to please remain in position until the MT would dock. Sometimes they'd listen too.
Hard to make out what is on the side of one of the drops. It's my guess its the reflection of the simulated cavern and perhaps some subtle lighting below. As for rails, the boats were within a two sided 'flume'. There is (?) was no third rail in the middle. However, for lifting the boat up the waterfall at the end, there is a ratchet dog on the boat in the middle bottom to connect to the chain. This is similar to what you experience on a roller coaster as you climb the initial hill. The ratchet both connects the boat to the chain but also will hold the boat in position should the ride fail or there is a slow up upstairs in which case the boat(s) on the lift will be held temporarily in position as upstairs clears. Disney documentation lists those small sloped swing lidded trash cans as “VESTIBULE WASTE CANS” They appear to be intended for indoor use only …. But there seems to be some evidence they were also used right outside of some building entrances. I hade to vintage paint shop art boards / painter’s guides for two of these that used the colors but reverse of each other and feature identical scroll patterns. One is for the Main Street Opera House , the other The Market House.
I think as Disneyland crowds got bigger these smaller trash cabs became obsolete and the standard “MODEL C “ liter-guard trash can was used inside and out.

There's some 'alternate' internet "proof" that 'bow tie" bunting - alternating with the half-circle bunting - hails from the summers thru the early falls of 1959 & 1960. Obviously, it may have appeared at other times, too.

Hey guys and gals, I apologize for my lack of participation - I went for a hike on Friday and sprained the heck out of my ankle. Had to walk 2.5 miles back to my car, that was fun. "Big deal! A sprained ankle? You big baby!". Well, I would agree with you, but it hurts a LOT. So the thought of gimping over to my computer is not appealing at the moment. It seems a tiny bit better today, and I'm hoping that tomorrow will show further healing.
I still read the comments and appreciate all of the fun input!
You big baby! ;-) Major, I experienced a very bad sprained ankle a few years ago. Black and blue and purple and very swollen. Probably a broken bone or two but I didn't go to the doctor. Being the manly man I am, I just suffered through it till it got better.
I was about 2/3 of a mile from home, so I had a fairly long and painful walk as well. Like the peasant who got turned into a newt by the witch, "I got better". And so will you... eventually. In the meantime, don't run any marathons for a while. And take it easy.
Oh, no! Take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon.

Major...that was a long walk with a sprain. At our age, if the swelling doesn't go down get that checked out. I did one time and was told it wasn't broken but apparently was in an earlier one. Took a long time to get strength in that ankle the second time around too. KS
Late…but Bu, I made one of those ‘pieces of eight’ medallions in that spot in 1980 and put it on my key ring…where is has remained, and in my pocket every single day since, for 43 years now. It reads “WALT DISNEY LIVES M.S.”
Maj! So sorry to hear about serious sprain. Hope you could keep it elevated and iced.
