Two From October 1972

Oh man, more stuff from Snoozeville today. I'm starting to feel guilty. Or maybe I'm just craving some pancakes.

We're back at "It's a Small World" yet again (sorry). A large group of young men in black jackets and ties has just disembarked from the Happiest Cruise That Ever Sailed Around The World. Could they be visitors from a foreign land? Welcome, visitors! Try a churro. The mechanical clock is erupting.

The Rivers of America are particularly glassy and smooth today, reflecting the Mark Twain like an antique mirror. The empty canoes remind me of gondolas in Venice for some reason.

Oh Major - haven't you heard-? ALL gentlemen (Japanese, or otherwise) are supposed to be attired in 'black jackets and ties', while journey-ing on the "happiest cruise that ever set sail 'round the world"-! It's simply the only way. Honest.

I winder when churros first started being served at Disneyland. The 60's? 70's??? The earliest picture I've ever seen with a Churro cart at Disneyland is from 1975.

The Men in Black have come to investigate extraterrestrial goings-on Tomorrowland, taking the circuitous route through it's a small world to avoid suspicion.

Thanks.

Nanook, what about black jumpsuits? I only wear jumpsuits. It's one of my rules.

Mike, when I made the comment about the churros, I wondered the same thing… I'm sure they weren't around in the 60's, and to be honest I am surprised that they were there as early as 1975. And I appreciate the fact that you are way cool!

Melissa, somebody with a neuralyzer will be visiting you very very soon.

JG, like you, I am one of the people who loves IASW. I don't get the people who don't!

The word on the street seems to peg churros @ DL to summer 1985, with the opening of Videopolis. No doubt they were sold right there - at Yumz. A first-hand account definitely places them there (DL) by 1987. The mid-80's does seem to have a ring of truth about it.

After doing some research, it appears the churro "arrived" at Disneyland sometime around 1985-1988 at the "Yumz" food concession in Videopolis. From there it quickly grew in popularity to what it is today.

There may have been an isolated cart or two before then (I have no idea), but it sounds like the churro craze started in the mid-80s.

Nanook - That's funny! We both chimed in about the same time. Looks like you beat me to it by a couple of minutes.

Caption this:

The FBI has sent field agents to Disneyland to investigate the outlandish claim that hungry animatronic dolls were eating some of the visitors to It's a Small World. The empty boats were confirmed to be only a fluke.

So I guess what we're both saying is that if one wanted a deep fried dough 'fix', one had to sidle over to New Orleans Square for a beignet-? Which are much better anyway.

(Now, about those Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cakes...)

Well of course we're back at Small World yet again, you big silly. It's a small world, after all...

Gondola canoes? I'm surprised they didn't go with singing canoe cast when Pocahontas came out. Sing alongs and musical encounters between cast on crafts and shore make a journey down the Rivers of America into a musical adven-... wait. They'd have to pay for the talent and it'd be over the top cheesy with a complete lack of subtlety. Never mind! Better we reflect on the reflective river in relative peace. :)

Nanook and K. Martinez, somehow 1985-ish sounds right; but Mike Cozart says he has seen a photo of a churro cart there in 1975 in his comment. Koo koo bananas.

Alonzo, I totally believe that FBI report. Once I was in the front row with a friend, and when we got back to the unload area, the people behind us were gone, with only their shoes remaining.

Chiana (welcome back!), you might be surprised to see how many Small World photos I don't post. Even then I feel like it is WAY over-represented on this blog. And oh man, singing canoes... don't even THINK thoughts like that, for fear that DIsney will pick them up.

I concur with the 1980's advent of the churro.

My last trip to Disneyland as a youth was in 1979(?) and didn't return again until about 1991 with my small children.

I had never heard of a churro before, and suddenly in 1991 I was surrounded by them.

So, AFAIK, churros came in sometime between those dates.
