On The Skyway, August 1963

Here's a slide that makes me happy... bright and clear and sunshiny, above Fantasyland in our Skyway bucket. I freakin' love love love those 60's metallic colors that were used on the buckets back in the day. Reminds me of the aluminum tumblers that were in my grandma's cupboard.

Looking back from whence we came (oh man, finally an excuse to use the word "whence"!), we can see part of the Alice ride below, with the striped tent and umbrella filled dining area, the Pirate Ship, and little Cinderella Castle (part of Storybook Land), and a glimpse beyond the berm.

Ahhh, what wonderful images - complete with multi-color Skyway towers. I wonder if the folks in Pic #2 are about to head into the "caterpillar barn", as the open door might indicate - although I guess that open door is where new caterpillars are added to the line.

Thanks, Major.

To me, in all of Disneyland, nothing matched the visual splendor and magic of the Skyway gliding through the Matterhorn. To this day it’s my most missed attraction.

I can still remember riding the Skyway in 1963. It was with my mother and older sister. I had to be held on my mother’s lap when riding and she was nervous because it felt really opened and exposed. Some of those first memories are still strong.

I like your comparison to the aluminum tumblers. I’ve got a cupboard full of them.

My mom's got a bunch of those aluminum tumblers too! That second picture may just become my new iPhone wallpaper... Just sayin :)

I found this old disneyana theme park souvenir poster.

I can't find a value for it and I'm hoping you can help.

I would have emailed you instead of adding this to a comment, but I didn't see an address on the site.

Nanook, I didn't notice the guys standing in that open doorway. Maybe it IS the "caterpillar barn"!

K. Martinez, there really was something great about the movement and the color that made it fun to watch from the ground. How many rides are like that?

Hannahx2, I got about half of my grandma's tumblers, my sister got the other half. I never use them because they seem to attract so much condensation!

Melissa, that is one of life's eternal equations.

Tom, I have never seen that poster before - I would assume it was made shortly after Walt's death, though it is hard to say. I have no idea what the value is, but my half-assed guess would be that it is not especially valuable. I could be totally wrong though.

Tom's poster reminds me of the Disney 6-cent postage stamp released after his death. Don't know about all the characters around it, though.

Brcye, you are right, the portrait of Walt is the based on the same photo as the one used on the stamp.

Major, there is nothing like these skyway shots, and there never will be again. I have a ton of them, thanks to you, and never get tired of them.

Thank you so much.

We had aluminum tumblers too, but they are all gone. Mom replaced them in the '70's with amber and green glass goblets, which are also gone now too.
