Christmas At Disneyland

Well, I didn't manage to post all of my scanned Disneyland/Christmas photos this season, but that just means that I can use them next year. Meanwhile, here are three more fun images to get you in the mood.

First is this picture from December, 1965 looking down a very crowded Main Street - possibly just before  a Christmas parade, since there seems to be a lot of folks sitting or standing on the curb. Tarped spotlights can be seen on top of some of the nearby buildings for the night version of the parade.

Right in the middle of this closeup, there is a woman holding her 1965 souvenir guidebook (of which you can view every page (courtesy of JG!). Check out PART ONE, PART TWO, PART THREE, and PART FOUR by clicking on the links.

Or just look at the cover!

Next, from December 1960 we see a Christmas parade in progress. The Plaza is full of happy guests who love the silly reindeer, I particularly love the smile on the little girl in the white sweater. To the left, a girl in a red coat reaches out in the hopes of touching one of the reindeer.

And finally, here's a pretty view of the Matterhorn (from November of 1968) topped with the giant star, as seen from the Disneyland RR and Tomorrowland Station. Spots of bright color are provided by the Skyway gondolas, the Autopia cars, the Monorail, and the Peoplemover.

I'll be out of town for the next few days. Have a wonderful Christmas Eve!

Notice in the 1968 image only the left side of the Tomorrowland AUTOPIA has the new MARK 7 Autopia cars. Interesting because supposedly ALL of Tomorrowland had the new Mark 7’s followed by Fantasyland in 1969…. But it looks like there’s only a few weeks left in 1968…..

People, people, PEOPLE! A lot of 'em! Is the guy in the light blue shirt and bow tie a CM? Or is he just being dapper. Hmm, we can almost see the red&white light bulb at the Coke Corner, but wrong angle (I think).

I love the orange-y light in the 1960 (reindeer) photo. It makes everything red, orange, or yellow really pop. I see a round, yellow Mickey balloon. Evidently, they didn't have the 'mouse ear' balloons yet. The crowd sure seems to like this parade, everybody's smiling! Lots of suits and ties, too.

Ah, multi-level Tomorrowland! We can see part of Fudgie behind the waterfall. And Screechy is carrying another big egg off to his/her nest. I don't think the Skyway was operating this day; I don't see anyone in the buckets. Nice view of the Star.

Thanks, Major. Enjoy your time away from the 'gorilla cage'.

Photo 1 is pretty nice. I like the wreaths on the lamp posts, all in a row. See the nicely dressed lady in the red outfit. I thought for a minute she might be a tour guide. We would be hard pressed to find anyone dressed so nice in today’s Park that we could confuse them with a TG. This is back when James Bond still wore a hat.

Thanks for the shout-out on the souvenir book, Major. If anyone wants the fully assembled PDF, please let me know.

Those are very silly reindeer indeed. I don’t recognize these characters at all.

The last picture is Peak Tomorrowland, the Matterhorn Star was like the Barker Bird and Monstro’s blinking eye. I was sure I remembered them but they no longer existed.

Thank you Major for these seasonal pics. I hope you have a good holiday!

Those 8 "Silly Reindeer" were my favorite version of the reindeer that appeared in the various Disneyland Christmas parades. The newer versions don't have the magic for me.

What a beautiful shot of Tomorrowland. Thanks, Major.

Ya'll all be safe tonight and enjoy Christmas Eve.

Must confess, never cared for the star on top of the Matterhorn. It's admitting it's not really a mountain. I can see elbowing the Abominable Snowman out for a Santa's runaway sleigh overlay, the Snowman not being native to Switzerland anyway.

Also: Reminder to dig out ONE HOUR IN WONDERLAND for a lazy afternoon between now and New Year's Day. 70 years old!
