Jungle Cruise

Here are some very "so-so" Jungle Cruise photos, only made worthwhile because they are infused with the flavors and aromas of 1956. Sort of "pipe tobacco, Juicyfruit gum, and Uranium-238" if I had to describe it. Not unpleasant!

These folks are lucky to have had a close encounter with Ricky The Rhino; ordinarily rhinos are shy and stay in the treetops where they care for their young.

There's a lion! Or something vaguely resembling a lion, anyway. Several times a day he likes to come down to the water's edge to sniff those flowers, sort of like Ferdinand the Bull. You can tell from his goofy smile that he's a little embarrassed.

I can't tell if this is the bull elephant or his mother in-law; he (she?) is mostly hidden behind those plants. Notice the orange tree, a leftover from the orchards that were there before Disneyland was a twinkle in Walt's eye.

Major, you make a great skipper!

@ Sue-
The Major does make a great Skipper-! (The new things we learned, just in this post-!)

Thanks, Major.

Nanook, I know you and I aren't the only ones that dream of being on the Jungle Cruise with our beloved Major-Skipper narrating the entire cruise! Wouldn't that be fun?! What do you picture him wearing, as our Skipper?

The reason that rhino hasn't gone back up into the trees yet, is because he still hasn't gotten his point across.

Have we seen a photo of that lion here on GDB, before? He is gnu to me.

It was nice of Walt to leave a few orange trees, along the banks of the Jungle Cruise rivers. I bet none of those animals ever developed scurvy.

And as soon as we finish our cruise with Major-Skipper, we want to ride with TokyoMagic-Skipper! I can't wait!

Major, I think that's the mother-in-law - 'cause she looks like she's wearing a babushka.

@ Sue-
I'm uncertain what outfit Skipper Major would don, but I'm certain he'd be regaling us with his joke about that orange tree, Orange Bird and Anita Bryant-!

Nanook, it appears you're holding back on some jokes . . . let's hear 'em. I think you're also well-qualified to make a great Skipper!

I know I've said it before, but my searching the internet for funny Jungle Cruise lines and stories is how I stumbled across this blog - so this is an endearing subject to me. :)

Nanook, your mentioning of Anita Bryant suddenly has me wondering something. There is lemon meringue pie, and also key lime pie....but why isn't "orange pie" just as big of a thing?

"Lou and Sue" said...

TokyoMagic! I know you’re talking about pie - but have you ever had Orange Crush soda-pop cake? It’s tasty!

TokyoMagic! said...

Sue, I have never had orange cake, but I've had lemon cake! Orange pie and orange cake both sound very appropriate, for smooshing into Anita Bryant's face!

Check out the bald pate on the guy in the boat. Talk about Uranium 238, this guy obviously is a down-winder from White Sands. He had hair before all those above ground tests. Lou and Sue, I think he would wear his Major uniform. Something between Pirates of Penzance and Sgt Pepper. He cuts a rakish figure in that outfit I tell ya. Hows about an orange creamsicle pie? Yum. Thanks Major.

In the very early days of GDB, Major, it seems like you had a strong aversion to posting "snoozer" pictures like these, but I'm glad you changed your mind, because we wouldn't hear all of these funny jokes if you hadn't! Thanks for the laughs this morning, everyone!

P.S. Any clue why it says "BananaPhone5000" (???) in all of your old Photobucket links?

These wonderful pics remind me of when the lake was way down and all of the "lakeside" homes had spectacular views of fields! Now, they weren't incredible Jungle Cruise Fields, but they were snoozers, none the less!

I'm looking hard, but I can't see the orange tree. They all look green to me.

Lou and Sue, thank you.

Nanook, Disneyland is about education AND entertainment. I call it “educationentertainment”. Trademark pending.

Lou and Sue, I think you could do a lot better for skippers, I doubt I’d be much good at it. Never had that desire to perform in front of a crowd, which I assume most skippers have. Half my spiel would be “ummms” and “errrs”.

TokyoMagic!, you sure know a lot about rhinos, you probably majored in rhinology. I’m not sure we’ve seen that lion to be honest, he looks so weird and “off model” compared to later versions.

Lou and Sue, at least TokyoMagic! has some real theme park experience, he’d probably make a great skipper!

Nanook, nobody would know who Anita Bryant is these days, which is for the best I think we mostly agree.

Lou and Sue, I know there used to be several Jungle Cruise blogs, run by actual skippers! I probably looked at them once in a while. But, as with 90% of blogs, they’ve probably stopped making new posts. I’m like one of the last surviving dinosaurs.

TokyoMagic!, I think that the tartness of limes and lemons makes for a better compliment to the meringue, whereas a ripe orange can be very very sweet. Too much sweetness! But I do wonder if anybody has made a good orange pie.

Lou and Sue, Orange Crush soda-pop cake, that’s a new one on me.

TokyoMagic!, didn’t Anita Bryant get at least one pie in the face years ago? The old witch.

Jonathan, you know how these days some guys look surprisingly good when they embrace their baldness and just shave it all off? I would look very stupid. But then again, maybe I already do! I like creamsicles, but it’s hard for me to imagine a creamsicle pie.

Andrew, “bananaphone5000” is the name I used for my Photobucket account. LONG. BORING. STORY. PS, Photobucket sucks. These days I will post any photo, no matter how terrible! Standards? What standards?

stu29573, I hope that there was no accompanying smell to the low water levels. Unless it smelled like baking brownies, then I would be OK with it.

Chuck, you discovered my secret; all of today’s photos are actually Ishihara tests for the colorblind!

Welcome aboard everyone, and remember "Only the Orange Cushions Float".

Great stuff today, everyone.

That lion looks a little threadbare.

Major-
I prefer to remember Miss. Anita for her July, 1960 #10 Billboard-charted hit My Little Corner of the World; and as a record collector, the wonderful art appearing on the album cover containing that song. And yes, she was [the now infamous] recipient of a pie-in-the-face.

He is the very model of a Sergeant-Major-General;
He's full of information that is local, state, and Federal.
He knows the Jungle Cruise's trees, and beasts animatronical,
And all the Jungle Skippers' jokes, offhanded and canonical!

(I got a pie in the face once - when you're expecting it, it actually feels kind of nice.)

Major, we WANT to hear your LONG. BORING. STORY. about the Bananaphone5000. It's a lazy Sunday, we have all day.

Here's the link to the delicious Orange Crush (soda/pop) cake:

Mellissa, those lyrics are just plain beautiful. Please write an entire light opera about GDB.

Melissa said...

He's very well-acquainted, too, with Disney facts historical;
He knows what lives in Wonderland, both faunacal and floracal.
About the Berry Farm of Knott he's teeming with a lot o' news,
And gets his inspiration from a robot hippopota-muse!
Then he can write a paragraph about the Fair of '64,
And then correct a photo scan that never has been fixed before.
But still, in information that is local, state, and Federal,
He is the very model of a Sergeant-Major-General!

Melissa, you really do need to write a book of poetry! You wrote the above in a matter of minutes!

Reading these comments weeping with laughter.

I do so wish we could have a real-life GDB party.

Everyone here is a gem of great price and i would love to meet you all.

Thanks Major, for hosting this. You should wear a gold lame' sash with your blue jacket with tails.
