Uninspired Sunday

For today's lazy Sunday post, I have two random (but snoozeriffic) scans to share with you.

What's going on here? The kids seem as baffled as I am. All three of the Little Pigs appear to have ganged up on the Big Bad Wolf (barely visible), trapping him against that fence. The Practical Pig might be carrying a baseball bat with barbed wire wrapped around it - I'm almost positive! It's enough to make one feel sorry for a wolf.

This second photo is probably from the 1950's (or early 1960's), looking down from the Skyway at the Space Bar, with the Astro Jets to our right. But the interesting thing (to me) is the row of tables (closer to us than the Space Bar), lined with all manner of wondrous souvenirs. I believe that this is the area known as "Hobbyland", and I don't recall ever seeing it quite so clearly in other similar photos.

Major-

I think the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf are just playing a friendly game of telephone. I'm a bit more-concerned about the young fella watching the confusion, as he appears to have knock-knee - or so it would appear-!

As interesting as the scene is in Tomorrowland, my eyes keep darting across the berm at the [essentially] deserted Harbor Blvd and surrounding area. Wow. Although I've seen more than one date for the closing of the Rainbow Mountain Stagecoach Ride, most sources seem to place it in September of 1959. And, as the tri-level attraction poster is on-display, I'm thinking this image may be from 1959, rather than early 1960 - but you never know.

Thanks, Major.

I should have said "sometime in the 1950's", and not limited to 1959.

Hobbyland! I'll get Strombecker models of Disneyland's Mooonliner (or, depending on what year it is, Rocket to the Moon) and Stagecoach, plus a Disney Space Ship, Space Station, Moon Rocket, and Satellite Launcher from the "Man In Space," "Man and the Moon," and "Mars and Beyond" episodes on the Disneyland TV series. Not sure how I'll carry it all, but that's what Mom and Dad are for.

Meanwhile, in that first picture - Matterhorn!

Thanks, Major, and I hope everyone has a fun, safe closeout to 2017!

Hey Major, 2017 has been a great year here on GDB. Thank you so much for all the work and time you've put into your blog. I'm still amazed how you keep it going on a daily basis. GDB is a great place to come to as it was when I first started reading and commenting here years ago. Your blog is very much appreciated.

Also, thank you to Mark H. Besotted, Huck Caton, Dr. Goat, Warren Nielsen, Steve Stuart, Irene & brother and finally Mr. X. for sharing your personal family photos with us this year. I enjoyed all the contributions from readers this year.

Wishing all the GDB readers a safe and Happy New Year!

I love the first pic wit the Three Little Pigs cornering the Big Bad Wolf. Not only is it humorous, but you've a little bit of everything in it, like part of the Matterhorn Chalet, some bobsleds loading, a little bit of the Matterhorn itself and a monorail pylon to top it off like the cherry on a sundae. It's pics like this that I love. I can almost hear the horn of the monorail as it passes overhead. Thanks, Major.

Nanook, yes, as far as I know, the Stagecoaches closed in late ’59 (along with the Conestoga Wagons. Judging by the changes to the Rocket to the Moon posters (which seem to have been done pretty quickly), I would say that pre-1960 isn’t a bad guess - I did suspect that it was probably from the 50’s.

Chuck, I guess it’s safe to say that you like plastic models! I do too, and regret not buying some of the examples you mention when they used to appear on eBay for a fraction of what they go for today. Oh well, my closets are too full anyway…

K. Martinez, thanks for the nice words! I appreciate it. As I’ve said before, it’s the comments that keep me going when I start to lose steam. And I definitely appreciate the folks who have generously shared their personal stuff! An anonymous person just sent me over 1000 scans from Disneyland, mostly from the 70’s and 80’s, (with some from the 60’s), and there is some great stuff… restaurant interiors, cast members, shooting galleries, and so on. They’ll start appearing in just a few weeks!

Happy New Year to everybody!!

I had a pair of red Keds like the girl in white in the first picture; they were my favorite shoes till I grew out of them.
That corner of Tomorrowland has some of my favorite architecture of the time, with the Space Bar and the Flight to the Moon building. I never noticed that little triangular flower bed under the easel with the Dumbo poster. Little touches like that really make a difference.

@Chuck, I bought a chocolate monorail car from the holiday display at the Contemporary Hotel at WDW in 2012, but it was too cool to eat. It's still sitting on top of my refrigerator.

HUGE thanks to the Major, guest contributors, and the whole GDB family for being a constant bright spot throughout 2017.

I'm drooling already, Major. Especially the restaurant interiors pics. How often do we get to see that in vintage Disneyland pics? I'm looking forward to 2018 already!

Happy New Year to all. Looking forward to seeing those pics...in particular the shooting galleries where I can still recall how sore my thumbs were from 8 hours shifts of loading those air guns! KS

@ Ken-
I suppose it's considered gauche to 'thank oneself', but no list of contributors would be complete if it lacked your name-! As you know, you've just finished sharing Part one of another set of images from WDW. It goes without saying I can't wait to see the remaining installments. A big thanks for providing The Major with so many interesting "tidbits" he has then shared with us all. Thanks Ken, SO MUCH.

@ KS-
'Sore thumbs', perhaps in the short run; but just think how it honed your Tiddlywink skills-! How many jobs at Disneyland can make that claim, I ask you-?

Nanook, Thank you for your kind comments. I love sharing with the readers here. It's always great when someone chimes in with an overlooked detail or some background information on a post I've done. I get a lot in return from the interaction alone. As I said, this is a great group of people here and can't think of any better to share with.

Melissa, I never had Keds. Do you remember “Red Ball Jets”?? I liked those. I think the advertising brainwashed me completely. Details like that little triangular flower bed may have been short-lived, but I can’t say for sure.

K. Martinez, I wish I could have scanned the slides myself, as many of them are very dark, or very dirty, but hey, they came out of nowhere… months and months worth of posts. I’d say that, realistically, I might be able to use 50% of them, possibly less. But that’s still many hundreds of scans!

KS, ha ha, I love details like the sore thumbs! There are photos of cast members too, who knows, maybe you are one of them.

Nanook, in a way it’s been more fun for me to share other people’s slides than it is to share mine. Plus I feel more like “one of the boys” rather than the blog master!

K. Martinez, like you, I’m glad that we have a nice little community here. No trolls or jerks!

Melissa, I feel the same way about my models. They're all too cool to eat.

Major, let me express belatedly what others have already posted, Thank You for a splendid 2017 and warm regards to the generous contributors who shared their personal photos and memorabilia to bring our memories back.

Looking forward to a good year in 2018. I promise I will have some fun things to share too, just need one last session with the large format scanner.

Best to all my GDB friends.

Also, those pigs are giving the wolf a blanket party.

The only motel visible on Harbor Blvd is the brand-new Tropicana, which is still there with the same name, except that it's an 'Inn' now :)

Major, thanks so much for another great year!
