Parking Lot, 1980's

Here are two oddball leftuggies from a set of four slides from the 1980's (the other two were already posted here).

This shot of the parking lot is my favorite of the bunch, looking across the old parking lot toward the Mark III Monorail on its way from the Disneyland Hotel and continuing to Tomorrowland. If it wasn't for the cars, I would swear this was from the early 1970s. Even after all these years, there's a part of me that still gets a thrill from seeing the Matterhorn in the distance.

This is a weird one; either it's a double exposure, or the man in the blue shirt is a g-g-g-GHOST! You can see right through him. The lady is standing next to a shop in which you can see a Del Monte can (Green beans? Corn? Peas?). Del Monte and Sun Giant were sponsors of the Market House from 1978 to 1983, so we can safely say that these two photos are from somewhere in that span. Other than the ghost, that's about the only interesting thing about this picture!

  1. Although the sprawling goodness of California Adventure is worth the real estate I do miss the old parking lot in some ways. Some how the long walk towards the park seeing it grow as you get closer builds the excitement.

I beg to differ on the interesting factor of picture 2. The ghost conductor heading down the street proves that several vaporous apparitions were on the loose that day.

  2. I like in the second picture, how it looks like the bearded man is checking out the guide map lady.

  3. Alonzo, can you believe that I still haven't been to DCA since the whole Carsland thing was added? I've been to Disneyland, just not DCA. I have to admit that the huge "Mickey and Friends" parking structure works great, but the last few times I've been to the park, they've made us park elsewhere, which kind of stinks. Meanwhile, I didn't notice the ghostly conductor. Cool!

Melissa, oh he's checking her out alright, and he likes what he sees! Just look at that grin.

  4. The Mark III Monorail Red image is a beauty. This photo captures perfectly the anticipation felt while walking the parking lot towards the entrance where a fun filled day of Disneyland adventures awaited.

Sun Giant was also the original sponsor of the "Village Haus" (originally called Village Inn) when the new Fantasyland opened in 1983. I remember it had a lot of healthier food selections on the menu back then.

    Thanks, Major.
