Cinderella's Castle 1957

Long before Cinderella's castle was in Orlando, she had a castle in Anaheim, as part of Storybook Land. Forced perspective made it look larger than it really was (or is, since it is still there). I like this first view (taken from Casey Jr.) showing the patchwork quilt flowers, the arched bridge, and Mr. Toad's Tudor-style home.

I'm sure there is not a single real stone in that wall, but it looks genuine!

With the exception of the Mountains, when I discovered that the rocks and stonework at Disneyland were all fake I was disappointed. From that point I tended to knock on the rocks and slap the stonework to hear if it had that hollow sound. I was surprised that it actually felt and sounded close to the real thing. Now and then you can see "broken" rocks on Tom Sawyer Island and other areas of the park that give it away. I love the overcast and cold day look of these images.

Yeah, that cement is pretty solid stuff; I figure that even if it is 1/2 inch think, it's going to feel like a rock. Did you see Vintage Disneyland Tickets' photos of the bridge that crosses the moat, with a big chunk that just fell off? So strange to see that solid structure was actually just a hollow shell!

And of course my fav - eucalyptus trees :)

Debbie V, I love those trees too. I wouldn't want one right next to my house, since they tend to drop huge branches unexpectedly ("widow makers"), but otherwise I think they are great! Love the smell too.

I am amazed to see telephone poles and houses in the background of the top photo of the Cinderella Castle. I had thought that the park had bought up the surrounding land on the north side of the property, but maybe it wasn't so back in 1957.
