Character Cutouts, 1956

In the 1950's, near the Red Wagon Inn, there used to be some simple plywood props to use as photo ops for fun luvin' guests. Instant souvenir, at minimal cost to the park. This first one is my favorite, maybe because the little girl posing as a Minnie Mouse baton twirler is so cute. Behind her is the very neat Captain Nemo cutout, which you will see much clearer one of these days.

The basic idea of poking your head through a hole in a painting for a funny photo is almost as old as photography itself. Here's another cute young lady, making friends with Donald Duck. I like the mention of the Art Corner on this painting, as if you were added to a store-bought postcard.

And finally, Joe takes his turn with Donald!

Man, aren't these a hoot-and-a-half-! Can't say as I remember the cutouts but they're definitely fun to see.

Thanks, Major.

I don't remember the Disneyland cutouts, but we had them up here at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk at one time.

Wasn't there a set of cutouts at "Fun Fotos" in Tomorrowland? I think I've seen photos of cutouts featuring the Matterhorn, Jungle Cruise and Monorail.

The simple pleasures of 1950s Disneyland, I'll never know.

The second pic looks a little like Mousketeer Sharon Baird standing next to Donald. Height is just about right.

Disneyland had cut outs in August of 1955 also. We have home movies of my brother sticking his head through a very silly looking one of Dopey.

Nanook, the cutouts are before my time, but I think they are a lot of fun for sure.

K. Martinez, they had some similar cutouts, one for the subs and the Matterhorn. For most of the Fun Fotos, you didn't have to stick your head through a hole, though.

Alonzo, if only I could confirm that the girl was Sharon! That would be amazing.

Irene, wow, you have home movies of Disneyland in 1955? Super cool!

Look at those little faces! I want to reach through the screen and pinch their cheeks.

They have these at Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World, but instead of Disney characters your face comes out as a pith-helmeted jungle explorer or a Balinese dancer.

Melissa - everyone knows that kids love to have their cheeks pinched! Very fun news that they actually do some sort of cutout photo ops at Animal Kingdom... I'll have to look online for some examples.
