Two From August 17 1968

Some of the pleasures of "It's a Small World" (for those of us who actually like that attraction) can be enjoyed before one even gets inside the massive show building. There are the topiaries and the mechanical clock, and even the boats themselves as they head into (and out of) the load area. The turquoise color of the trough looks like a jewel in the bright sun, and it's fun to watch the people in each boat.

The boats have been changed rather recently, but in these original boats, the front row was the place to be! Plenty of leg room. I am intrigued by those "Devo" glasses on the lady in row 2! Row 3 is crammed with 5 kids. And in the last row, a woman is filming her ride experience.

Here's the Matterhorn, taken from what I believe is a Peoplemover vehicle. You can see one particularly swoopy curve exiting the mountain from left to right.

  1. Yes, what is it with those "Devo" sunglasses-? And more importantly - where can I buy a pair-??

The shot of the Matterhorn is indeed shot from an unusual angle. All the better for us to enjoy. Thanks, Major.

  3. Dig them glasses man!

Nice shot of the concrete hill too. Pic 3-I think that swoopy curve was what inspired the curve in Swoopy's hair ;-). Or maybe what caused it.

  4. Interesting to me that you got pictures with this specific date - August 17, 1968 is the day I was born! Though I didn't make it to Disneyland until a few years later.

  5. Wonderful shot of the iasw flume and the highly 1968-styled riders! Too bad carbohydrates and super-sized meals forced an overhaul of the whole thing.

  6. Nanook, only spuds can buy those glasses!

TokyoMagic!, you mean it was ruined when they removed the Skyway? Or when the added the rails? Or when they put in those terrible bobsleds?

rimebuster, I would like to find pictures taken on the day I was born! So far, no such luck.

  7. oh yeah - those extended front row seats really came in handy when I had a painful arthritis flare at WDW in 2011.
Love the smell of the water - I know that's weird and it's just the chlorine - still. Swimming pool memories maybe.

  8. Pardon the puns, but for me the Matterhorn was at its peak before they removed the Skyway. After that, I never felt quite the same about it. The whole dynamic changed and it’s been all downhill from there; the railings, the new bobsleds and the too tall trees next to the base making the Matterhorn seem smaller. I still love the Mountain, but it’s seen its glory days IMO.

  9. Nice pics of the IASW. Interesting how that curve is so evident in this picture and yet unnoticeable in others. Something about the angle no doubt.
