For a slight change of pace, today's photo is not so much about the Chicken of the Sea pirate ship as it is about the dining area behind it. Skull Rock was added to Fantasyland in 1960, and along with it were cooling waterfalls, grottoes, and tropical plants.
You don't see many views of where you actually ate, so here is a detail to give you some idea. The pirates have rigged some spare sails for shade, and the tables and chairs have a nautical look, seemingly inspired by wooden ship's wheels.
Very nice photo today of a very much missed location! I see some children in a monkey cage off in the distance.
ReplyDeleteA spot that would have made a particularly popular comeback several years ago. Still could. Pirates are big. Between Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell stuff they could've used it. Oh well!
ReplyDeleteColorful spot with a touch of whimsy that helped to bring some 3-D spread and breadth to the spartan early Fantasyland. Casey Jr. back there's cute, and that's one of the biggest contributions by a specially painted up trash can I've ever seen hehe
seems like such a nice place to hide out from the crowds for a bit and enjoy your meal...
ReplyDeletethanks for some rarely seen images!
Now THAT'S theming!
ReplyDeleteActually, my earliest memory from Disneyland is on this very spot, three years later.
ReplyDeleteWe had just come from the Tiki Room for the first (of many times)and I saw these very same bird-of-paradise plants and being 5 years old, I was enchanted by them.
My Dad got a pocket knife out and was going to cut it, but I stopped him saying "Don't cut Mr. Disney's magic flowers".
Being that age, I could only imagine Disneyland as Walt's back yard, and everything in it his private property (I mean, *everything* had his name on it...)
Well, the flowers were spared, but my Dad did pry out several air vents later that day at the Submarine Voyage. He's kind of a klepto I guess.
What a great pic. This area realy came together well when it was first built. I sat there many times. It felt like you were truly far away on some tropical island.
ReplyDeleteI was a busboy back in the early 70's and spent many a private party night working this very dining area and listening to the pirate ditties over and over and over... Thanks for the post and pictures; brings back fond memories.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great photo - I've never seen that angle.
