Two From August 1962
Here's a fun pair from the summer of '62! Starting with this view of a family enjoying lunch in Frontierland. I'm not really sure which restaurant they visited, but one of YOU will know. Some of the guests have a tired, "over it" look, but I suppose they've just been caught off guard. The boy is going to enjoy his gourmet hamburger - extra-dry, just the way he likes it.
For a complete change, how about a house... OF THE FUTURE?!? Once you stepped inside, gravity vanished and guests floated through the rooms. It's true! I did my own research. Once a year they filled the house with water and koi, just because they could. The all-plastic house was just fine afterwards.

Obviously, aunt Minnie, in the red dress, is in the "over it" camp. I would venture a guess as to which restaurant this is, but I'm sure I would make a fool of myself... nothing new there. ;-) Some interesting fashions here, but I'll let Melissa tackle that. Except to say that the lady with her back to us, has a nice blue and white blouse (or is it a shirt?).
It's been a while since we've seen a photo of the HotF, other than getting a distant peek of it through the trees now and then. This is a slightly different angle than we usually see. And it's got a mountain growing out of the top of it!!! I don't know how they managed that enigmatic feat, but it IS the House of the Future after all. I tried to see what was on the inside, but it's hard to tell what's actually inside, and what is being reflected in the windows.
Thanks, Major.
Major-
Why does it seem to me we've seen a number of House of the Future images with only one person visible-? (Am I wrong-?)
Thanks, Major.
Also-
"I'm not really sure which restaurant they visited, but one of YOU will know".
Those chairs belong to Aunt Jemima's Kitchen, as does the structure barely visible behind those happy diners.
Hey Folks, today might be a repeat of Friday - I will be going out to my mom's house again, and while the power is back on, the TV, phone, and Internet has never come back on. We're waiting for a technician to come somewhere (hopefully) before 5 o'clock PM. So I might be unable to comment again. Sorry about that!
"Once a year they filled the house with water and koi, just because they could."
And all of that water ran "uphill," because the plastic used for the house was mined in the town of Calico. Or something like that.
And speaking of "doing your own research," A.I. tells me that every single item on the menu at Aunt Jemima's Kitchen, came with pancake syrup either on it...or in it, including the burgers and soft drinks. Tasty!
Thanks, Major!
I'm getting Al Pacino vibes from those bucket hats. I like the botanical field guide on that woman's shirt. And the young lady with a (Brownie?)camera has a perfect 'sock hop' hairdo.
Great people watching photo, Major. I wonder who the subject was?
HotF was a favorite of mine even though I was a young boy at the time.
Thanks, major. Good luck with the Wi-Fi! Debacle.

OK, first picture, left to right:
1. Every woman over 30 I knew in the early 2000s had a striped blouse just like that one. I think they must have been giving them away free at Target or something.
2. Zorro the White
3. Country Club Couple, Jr.
4. The Wallpaper That Ate Grandma
5. If I sit on my feet long enough, they'll go numb and they won't hurt anymore
6. How is Dick van Patten's clone even more exasperated than Dick van Patten? The lady behind him doesn't know how he pulls it off.
7. I don't know what anybody else is even doing here, because Burger Boy wins every prize. Cutie Patootie.
8. Crop Top Gilligan Girl, I'm going to assume the kid behind you is your twin, because that's just how I roll. 🎶Two shirts, two hats, two mops of curls, and you got two Crop Top Gilligan Girls!🎶
9. It's the Sisterhood of the John J. Audubon Traveling Wildlife Museum Blouse.
10. Don't look now, but we are being read to FILTH by Aunt Minnie and the Fashion Police as we get off the steamboat. If Cousin Zilpha slides those sunglasses down her nose even a fraction of an inch, we might as well jump in the river.
That looks like a little Vulcan boy leaving the House of the Future.
Hope everything goes OK, Major!
Love'm! Those chairs are really pretty, the shape reminds me of hot-air-balloons or Crocus petals; and slightly pitched back for some short-term 'comfort'. I didn't realize how many variations there have been.
Crisp look at HotF is always a joy, but big bonus points for a peek at the waterfalls flowing under it. I STILL want to live here.

Photo 1, the man with sunglasses in the middle distance is gazing straight at the camera. I think he is the subject of the photo, but I can’t explain why there are so many people in between. Very odd photo. Agree, it is the west patio of Aunt Jemima’s kitchen, now the River Belle Terrace.
The HotF is filled with water right now, we just can’t see the fish. The overflow is feeding the waterfalls. This is a nice pic, too bad the shadow is so deep.
Thanks Major! Hope your utility issues are resolved soon.

First Photo: I think if I was a kid at a pancake house, I wouldn't be eating a hamburger.
Second Photo: Obviously, the HOtF was placed so that the waterfall from the Matterhorn could pour water into the top of it, eventually filling the koi pond below. Of course that was before the Matterhorn was moved to Fantasyland. Nicely framed photo!
@ zach-
"And the young lady with a (Brownie?) camera..."
Yes, indeed - it's a Kodak Brownie Holiday camera. And even though it's probably a purse, or the like, the 'dark object' sitting on the far right table also appears to be the back of another Holiday camera - the 'white square' being the viewfinder, and the 'red dot', the window revealing the snapshot number being exposed.
Melissa, HA! I didn't notice the Vulcan ears on that kid until you mentioned it. Usually, when Vulcan folk time travel to the past and visit Earth, they wear hats to cover up their ears so as to not draw attention to themselves. Young Spock must not have gotten the memo.
Sometimes wondered why we never saw whole tracts of Houses of the Future, or even solitary copies. Evidently it wasn't as simple and low-maintenance as expected.
Even so, you'd think some Silicon Valley tycoon would have at least attempted it. Or an old school Disney guy (Ward Kimball had his train, and Roy Williams built a mock volcano by his swimming pool).
"And even though it's probably a purse, or the like, the 'dark object' sitting on the far right table also appears to be the back of another Holiday camera"
Oh, wow! I thought it was a jug-shaped bottle of pancake syrup! Well, we all knew I didn't have the best eyesight in the gorilla troop.

Maybe he figured the HoF was the one place he could be safe and let his ears down, as it were!
HEY! We’re up and running, earlier than expected.
JB, I can totally understand a person “hitting a wall” during a long visit to Disneyland. If it’s only sort of your thing, you’ll get tired. REALLY tired. Which is why it’s nice to take breaks, hydrate, etc. I like to take a break by sitting on the Disneyland Railroad! There’s a postcard of the HOTF from this general angle, so I guess I didn’t realize that most photos are taken from elsewhere. I’m always happy to see the plastic house!
Nanook, hmmm, I never thought about it, but maybe all the people are *inside* the HOTF? Or was it not as popular as I’d like to think it was?
Nanook, Aunt Jemima’s Kitchen, thank you!
TokyoMagic!, oh yeah, I forgot about the water running uphill. I read that on “Mouseplanet”! Ha, your comment about everything at Aunt Jemima’s having syrup reminds me of when my family went to Love’s BBQ when I was a kid, and my brother accidentally put syrup on his ribs instead of sauce (I don’t remember why syrup would have been on the table).
zach, hey, I have a perfect sock hop hairdo too! I’m assuming that the whole family was at that table, and that they were the subjects.
Melissa, you might be right about striped blouses in the early 2000’s, but this lady had one in 1962. “Zorro the white”?? Notice that at least two ladies have very similar patterns at that table, it must have been the fashion of the time, like wearing an onion in your belt. Dick van Patten, winner of more Oscars than any other actor. “Gilligan Girl”, a new TV series on Nickelodeon! “Cousin Zilpha”, there’s a name I’ve never seen before. Vulcan boys feel right at home in the House of the Future!
MS, I see what you mean about hot air balloons, or even crocus petals. Like you, I want to live in the HOTF, but I want to scale it up by 200%.
JG, you might be right about the man with the sunglasses, if so, the photographer did not care about anything else. I guess I should have looked up the various dining areas in Frontierland, maybe I would have come up with Aunt Jemima’s all by myself! But I didn’t.
Omnispace, hmmm, good point, although I assume they must have served items besides typical breakfast fare? I was just outbid on an Aunt Jemima’s menu, it was at $350 the last time I looked. Oh well. Ha, waterfall water is the best water, and Walt wanted only the best for his HOTF.
Nanook, I like the name “Holiday” for a camera, it’s cheerful and happy. You sure know a lot about old Kodaks!
JB, while it might be politically incorrect today, I liked the episode in which the Enterprise gang wind up on a planet that is like a 1930’s gangster film, and Kirk explains that, “As you can see, my friend is Chinese”. It was good enough for those dumb gangsters!
Ha, your comment about everything at Aunt Jemima’s having syrup reminds me of when my family went to Love’s BBQ when I was a kid, and my brother accidentally put syrup on his ribs instead of sauce (I don’t remember why syrup would have been on the table).
It's like that scene in To Kill a Mockingbird where Jem invites Walter Cunningham home for lunch!
I'm also reminded of a running joke my sister and I had about every dish at Walt Disney World having Craisins in it, that stemmed from one visit where it seemed like restaurant sponsorships were thin on the ground, Ocean Spray was stepping in to sponsor a lot of restaurants it hadn't previously sponsored, and therefore Craisins seemed to be showing up in a lot of cuisines you wouldn't expect to see them in. And even at the Liberty Tree Tavern in Liberty Square, where cranberries were a natural fit, there were Craisins in dishes we didn't remember seeing them in before. We were picturing the Utilidors bursting with 50-gallon drums of Craisins, trucks of Craisins backed up the I-4 all the way to Daytona, desperate menu writers chained to their desks at 3 AM, hopped up on pots of Craisin coffee, trying to come up with the next plausible dish. "Do you think they'll buy Craisin sushi?" "Make it a snack credit on the Dining Plan and they'll buy their own socks in a tortilla!" "HAHAHA!"
I'm enjoying everyone's funny comments, here, today! I think the one that has me chuckling the most -- is Omnispace's:
"Obviously, the HOtF was placed so that the waterfall from the Matterhorn could pour water into the top of it, eventually filling the koi pond below. Of course that was before the Matterhorn was moved to Fantasyland."
Thank you, Major [and everyone]!
