Stuff From Da Box

Whenever I'm feeling a little low, I'll take a luxurious bubble bath (while listening to Kenny G), and then enjoy some Stuff From Da Box! Join me, won't you? I mean for the Stuff, not the bubble bath (which is only for me and my vinyl walrus).

First up is this little employee pin given to somebody at Michigan Bell. Do the three stars mean three years? Or thirty? I would guess that this is from the 1930s.

Next is another employee badge, from the Cadillac Motor Co. Car division, that is. It has a pleasing hexagonal shape, and a mysterious code that only true insiders will understand. What do you think, is this also from the 1930s? Or maybe it's from as late as the 1950s.

Here's a metal badge from the defunct Sambo's restaurant chain. The name did them in, at least partly, though it is taken from the names of the two men who founded it, Sam Battistone and Newell Bohnett. Still, they adopted the story of Little Black Sambo, sanitizing it to a degree. As a kid I loved the idea of pancakes with "tiger butter", and as I've said once before, I discovered that fries dipped in A1 Steak Sauce was a revelation. The last Sambo's restaurant (in Santa Barbara) changed its name to "Chad's" in 2020.

When I used to go to collector's shows, I was clearly drawn to pins from the Trailways bus system. I think I imagined a romantic ideal of bus travel, probably far from reality. Still, it made me think of the golden age of road trips, exploring post-War America on a budget. Three of these are safety awards, for two, six, and thirteen years (complete with two possibly-genuine diamonds). I was surprised to learn that Trailways was still a going concern: The Trailways Transportation System is a public transport bus service in the United States. It operates a network of approximately 70 independent bus companies. The company is headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia. Read more about it HERE if you are interested.

What can I say, I have a lot of little employee pins and badges! Including this tiny TWA pin, which I imagine was worn by flight attendants, possibly on their lapels or on their scarf ties (whatever those are called). However, I have no proof, it could have been worn by any employee.

And finally, here's a beautiful little enameled pin from the Spartan Aircraft Company, which I was not familiar with. The Spartan Aircraft Company was an American aircraft manufacturing company, headquartered on Sheridan Avenue near the Tulsa Municipal Airport in Tulsa, Oklahoma.[1] Previously known as Mid-Continent Aircraft Company, the company had been reorganized under the Spartan name in 1928 by oil baron William G. Skelly—and operated until 1961, manufacturing aircraft, aircraft components, and recreational vehicle trailers. The company was known for the luxurious Spartan Executive aircraft produced in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

J. Paul Getty acquired the company from Skelly in 1935. After World War II, Getty ended aircraft production and converted the company to manufacturing trailers under the Spartan Manor brand—subsequently ending all production in 1961.

I need to photograph more Stuff From the Box!

Major-
These pins are real beauties (okay - the Sambo's being of a "simpler" design can't measure up). The Spartan Aircraft Co. pin is the clear winner of this grouping, though.

I believe the numbers on the Cadillac pin refer to the department [S-2] and the employee number [115].

Thanks, Major.

I prefer a plastic jellyfish over a vinyl walrus, myself. It compliments the bubbles.

1) I like how they made the bell look 3-dimensional by using curved lines and foreshortening.

2) I opt for the 1930s. I like the hexagonal shape but otherwise, it's kinda blah. I demand bright, shiny, saturated colors! ;-)

3) I can't help but notice that Sambo doesn't look particularly 'black' here... nor Indian, other than the way he's dressed.

4) The quartet of Trailways pins pushes all my buttons (I know... family blog). Interesting shapes, shiny gold, other colors, and gemstones!

5) The TWA pin may be small, but it has a nice solid shape to it, and SHINY!

6 ) Ooh! I like the Spartan pin! I was all set to say that the 4 Trailways pins were my favorites today. But I really like the elegance of this pin. Not as bright and flashy as the others but that just emphasizes its understated beauty.

I see that Nanook has chosen the Spartan pin as well. Good choice!

Thank you, Major.

Major, I hope before you take your bubble baths you scream, "Calgon, take me away!"

I remember going to the Sambo's across the street from Knott's several times after leaving the park with family. I'm not sure I ever went to another one, even though I remember seeing them all over. There was one at an offramp from the 5 fwy on the way to Disneyland, and there was a Denny's located on the same street, at the very next offramp. They both had gigantic signs that motorists could spot from far away. The "Disneyland billboard" was also located right there in that stretch of the freeway. Anyway, I remember my mom telling me that they had changed the Sambo mascot at some point, from the original character to the one on the badge, because of complaints from the public. It looks like the restaurant was founded in 1955, but the mascot was not changed until the 1960s. I remember the multiple panels behind the sit-down counter, telling the story of Sambo (with the newer mascot). I also remember seeing some of those panels for sale at a flea market in the 1990s.

My favorite item today is the deco Spartan pin. Or is it streamline moderne? Or is it neither?

Thanks for sharing more of your "Stuff" with us, Major!

That Santa Barbara Sambo's was the first and last of 1100 locations. (I go by there often). The whole thing had a Disneyesque look. The George Floyd situation finally put an end to the name.

Ooh, I loves me some Stuff from the Box! Tiny treasures, in a box, gives me pleasure, rocks my socks!

The TWA pin has a lot of vroom; it makes me think of being swept into the big globe on a Omnimover track at the beginning of If You Had Wings.

I remember those awkward couple of years when all the Sambo's around here changed to Sam's, and then were bought out by Perkins or Denny's. The "Family Sam" mascot was this old man who was supposed be be like a kindly old Grandpa but gave me the creeps.

I have to go with the majority here; the Spartan pin is the winner for me. The blue background sets off the gold like lapis lazuli on an Egyptian tomb, and the Art Deco style reminds me of those fancy hood ornaments designed by Tiffany and Lalique on classic cars. The little Spartan guy even has an archaic smile!

Nanook, I agree, for sheer beauty of design, the Spartan Aircraft pin wins, hands down. The “S-2” department?? Those guys were crazy!

JB, I’ll never understand you jellyfish lovers, but hey, whatever! The thing about the Michigan Bell pin that I like is that it feels so old fashioned. Doesn’t the bright yellow of that Cadillac pin count as a saturated color? This version of Sambo never looked black, at least I don’t recall ever seeing him that way. I do love those Trailways pins, maybe I need to look for more! Someday I’m going to have to photograph all of my “junior pilot” and “junior stewardess” pins, there’s a lot of them! And yes, the Spartan pin is pretty hard to deny.

DBenson, I love that film (makes me want to take a road trip, 1950s style!), though I don’t know how much of what I love is the bus travel part.

TokyoMagic!, I scream “Calgon, take me away” as often and as loudly as possible every day. My family went to a Sambo’s near Encino (it might have been in Tarzana), and it always seemed like a fun special treat to me. It’s a shame that they picked “Sambo” of all things, in spite of it being based on the owner’s names. Maybe they’d still be around today? I don’t remember a Sambo’s mascot other than the little Indian boy seen on this badge, if they had an earlier, less-PC mascot I’d be interested to see. I was thinking that, at one point, they just used the tiger, but I also might be conflating it with the Hungry Tiger restaurants. Wow, how cool it would be to own some of those panels. From a flea market, incredible. Streamline Moderne is a type of Art Deco, so you’re right on both counts!

MS, at this point it’s probably just as well that the “Sambo’s” name is no more, though “Chad’s” is not exactly inspiring.

Melissa, I didn’t know you were “swept into the big globe on a Omnimover track at the beginning of If You Had Wings”. Sounds cool! Ha ha, “Family Sam”, I’ll have to look him up. And yes, I was thinking that the Spartan guy looked like he had a classic “comedy” smile.

Wow, hard to choose today. Up to the TWA pin, I thought it was the best, but the Spartan pin takes the biscuit.

Major, instead of yelling about Calgon, you should be yelling “This is Sparta!”

Thanks for the pins!

When you mentioned luxuriating in a bubble bath, naturally I pictured you in THIS 'SETTING'-!

JG! Why not both??

Nanook, that’s about right, though I wear a plastic shower cap to protect my hairdo!
