Tom Sawyer Island and Mark Twain, 1960s
Frontierland's Rivers of America is such a beautiful and important element in the western side of Disneyland that it is nearly impossible to imagine it not being there. The real estate is considerably more developed than it was back when these photos were taken (my guesstimate is that they are from the late 1960s, though they are undated). There's more for guests to do, but the place feels less like "the frontier".
Tom Sawyer Island is lush and green, perhaps this was a brutal SoCal winter. At first I thought that there were no guests visible, but there is one (or two?) to the extreme left, and I can't quite tell what the red and yellow shape is near the raft landing.
Views of the Mark Twain from this general vantage point are among the more common images in many lots of slides. But it's so pretty!
The two photos merged beautifully, which is always a nice bonus.

Major-
Is this not everybody's favorite river, I ask you-? I would think that statement would go unchallenged, but after seeing the destruction of its counterpart over in the F state, I'm quite uncertain going forward. Enjoy it while it's still here to partake in all its thrills and beauty.
Thanks, Major.
Hmm. There might be another guest on the fishing dock, sitting down... hard to tell. At first I thought the red and yellow thing was Bigfoot wearing a harlequin costume as a disguise. You know, to keep the paparazzi away. But now I'm not sure. Good grief! There are LOTS of AEDs in the River! Maybe that's why there are so few guests.
In the 2nd pic, the water has that nice glassy look. And that thing I thought was a guest on the fishing dock is still there in this pic. So maybe it's not a guest after all.
Wow, the merged photos look great! It's like the photographer meant the two photos to be combined.
Nice riverside photos. Thanks, Major
Wow, those pics did merge very nicely. Good job, Major! I miss THIS Frontierland so much!
Thanks, Major!
Excellent panorama, Major! Nice work.
I can’t explain the red and yellow object other than a glimpse of a guest partially obscured by foliage.
Seeing the island like this makes me despise Fantasmic even more. I’m hearing rumors that island (and the River) will be closed for an extended time to refurbish the fountains and other equipment related to that show. Even odds that the island never reopens to guests, but remain as backstage and backdrop to the river craft.
Thanks for the beautiful pics today!

Nanook, I’m sure there are some people who prefer the Susquehanna River, but I don’t want to know them! Can you imagine if they removed Disneyland’s river? That would be the end for me.
JB, Bigfoot does like to wear outfits, especially a nice hat in the Spring. You’ll be seeing Bigfoot on this blog in a matter of months. STAY TUNED. Ever since I read about how the river looked like shiny Jello (in an article about Disneyland Viewmaster packets), I can’t not think about that when I see photos like today’s.
TokyoMagic!, yeah, these merged about as well as one could hope! I always like a nice panorama.
JG, yeah, the red and yellow anomaly is either a mandrill baboon, or two guests. I’m still undecided. I saw that “Fresh Baked” had a video about the River, but I didn’t watch it, I assume that he dropped the news about the closure of the river? To quoth Shakespeare, ARGH.
