Two Fun Ones From June 1967

I really like today's photos, featuring some girls that you will see a few more times in future posts.

In this first one, two sisters spin and spin on the legendary Mad Tea Party attraction - little sis is doing all the work, but she seems to be having a lot of fun, so it's OK. I love the color and implied movement, this one's almost SOUVENIR GUIDEBOOK WORTHY.

Mom finally let this girl get her ears pierced, and I'll bet she was darn happy about it. She's munching on popcorn, holding one of those classic striped boxes that were recreated many years later. Popcorn and braces don't mix well, but sometimes you just have to say "What the heck"!

Major-
Braces and popcorn... the best-! A nice pair, today.

Thanks, Major.

I wonder if "Miss Braces- 1967" ate the popcorn before or after her spin in the Teacups? From a motion sickness point of view, I suppose it doesn't really matter; popcorn probably wouldn't cause any problems... Let's test it out!

That is one goofy picture with the popcorn and braces. How does one get food out of those things anyway? You can't just remove them like a retainer.

Looking forward to seeing what else "Miss Braces- 1967" gets stuck in her teeth. Thanks, Major.

You are NOT supposed to eat popcorn when you have braces. In fact, orthodontists make you swear on a bible that you wont eat popcorn while undergoing orthodontia.

How does one get food out of those things anyway?

JB, there is an assortment of special little brushes for cleaning under and around braces. The problem is, getting a teenager or a child to understand the importance of keeping them clean, and getting them to use the special brushes faithfully.

Oh, by the way.....I do like these two pics, and I'm looking forward to seeing more from this lot! I just hope we don't see little sis chewing gum or eating caramels in a later post! Thanks, Major!

What are the odds?!? ....to have a close-up taken of you - at your most-awkward age, while doing something you shouldn't be doing (eating popcorn with braces), and then put on a world-renowned blog to be viewed and critiqued by millions. Every girl's nightmare. Though I bet she grew up to be an absolute doll, with a beautiful, perfect smile!

Thanks, Major, for more fun pics.

P.S. In the first pic, Big Sis is looking a bit green. Not her lucky day for being photographed, either.

I love these pics, happy kids having a good day at the Park.

Yes, no popcorn with braces, but this is Disneyland popcorn, ok to make an exception, but just this once.

I think the second photo is taken outside the gate in the esplanade, so she would be able to run back to the motel right away and brush.

Thanks Major!

Nanook, 4 out of 5 dentists recommend popcorn with braces!

JB, I am lucky to not suffer from motion sickness, so I could happily eat popcorn and then ride the Teacups. But I know other people who turn green at the mere suggestion of riding that attraction! You get food out of braces with a firehose.

TokyoMagic!, I had braces and I don’t remember taking the “no popcorn” oath, but I was probably drunk. And yes, I somehow doubt that a ten year-old kid is spending too much time with oral hygiene!

TokyoMagic!, what about chewing gum AND eating caramels at the same time??

Lou and Sue, it’s true, that poor girl never imagined that we’d be looking at her photos nearly 60 years later. But it’s too late now!

EricM, I remember a time when cat eye glasses were out of fashion, but now they really have come all the way around back to “cool”!

Lou and Sue, we need one of those bosun’s whistles to welcome new readers.

JG, the girl’s orthodontist will be mad, until he realizes that the popcorn is DISNEYLAND popcorn. “I’m so proud of you” he will say, with a tear in his eye. Yes, we can see the exit gates behind the girl, I guess the family headed home while it was still daylight. For some reason.

I'll get into the popcorn, but want to start saying how clear and how great the color is on these photos! Someone had a good camera and knew how to use it! Now: let's move to subject matter....lot to unpack here with "Braces '67". I was lucky enough to forgo braces, however did have some mouth work when I was younger, and even today I remember what that pain was like! As a popcorn guy, there is nothing that is going to stand in my way of eating it! Even braces! But I can see that it would be extremely problematic, and perhaps if things went south with popcorn chaff, it may even go to a "return trip" to the DDS....which in my parents mind would be $$$. Therefore: this would never have been allowed. That the girl still has a piece stuck in her mouth is charming and disturbing all at the same time. Kind of like people chewing with their mouths open, which if I did that as a child, or an adult, I would have been walloped. Do they use that word anymore? The earring photo I believe was taken at the Main Gate on the right side: you can see the Kennel Club in the background (?) perhaps (?) I had to wait for my ear piercing until I was an adult. It's one of those "You don't work at the Park anymore, so time to grow a beard, get tattoos and get your ears pierced. I did all of those things, but not at the same time. Thanks Major!

Bu, you’re right, a good camera (and lens) makes all the difference - most folks used “just OK” cameras, and I’m often frustrated at the lack of sharpness. But it’s just something you have to accept with 50, 60, or 70 year-old photos. I had braces, and I’m ultimately glad that I did, but boy, when they tightened those things, my teeth would be so sore that I could hardly eat. And those rubber bands that I had to use, ugh. Normally I would find visible food in somebody’s mouth to be gross, but it’s popcorn - not that gross - and it’s not really in the girl’s mouth! It’s trying to escape, just like when I eat handfuls of live grasshoppers. Those little devils are quick! I thought we were on the west side of the entry gates, but I’m usually wrong. I know plenty of guys with pierced ears, and good for them; as far as I’m concerned, it’s something that I don’t have to deal with personally! Yes, I’m lazy.
