The Skyway, November 1961
It's time to visit the RESTORATION CORNER again. As I explained once before, I have a small lot of slides that turned various shades of red and pink. But I saved them, hoping that I might be able to restore the color, through the magic of Photoshop. Today's examples turned out especially well!
This unrestored view is unpleasant to gaze upon, there's no denying it. All that gross orangey-pink! But you can see that there is still some color information remaining, so it's (hopefully) not a lost cause.
And hey, what do you know! Now it looks pretty great! As always, I see things that I might have done differently, but at some point you just have to pronounce the thing "DONE". It's nice to see some blues, greens, and yellows. I particularly like this composition, with the Skyway gondola in the upper left, a Casey Jr. train below, and the Skyway Chalet to the right - the photo must have been taken from the poop deck (heh heh) of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship.
Speaking of the Skyway, here's another photo that has turned a revolting shade of magenta that makes me want to do crime.
Say! That's much better. I wonder if the people in the green bucket are friends or family, or if they just happen to be looking directly at us. I'm pleased with the color now, but noticed that Screechy's plumage is usually a lovely blue, yet it appears gray here. I blame society.

Major-
'Restoration Corner' - is that near Restoration Hardware-? (I do hope it's not as overpriced as Restoration Hardware, though...)
The 1st image is lovely, including [what I'm assuming is] a partial re-growth on the berm behind the Living Desert, following the previous year's upgrade; a uniformed DL Police Officer; and something I hadn't noticed before - Casey Junior's own loudspeaker - another Altec 31A sectoral horn, "powered" by a 730B driver, thru a 27A throat attachment-! (Now you know the secrets to creating the sounds of the original Fantasyland right in your own backyard-!)
Those people in the green bucket are 'looking directly at us' while they triangulate the best geometry for spitting directly on our heads-!
Thanks Major, for another visit down to 'Restoration Corner'.
OOooh, more dramatic 'before & afters'!
Wow! This one cleaned up REAL good! It's got its Sunday-go-to-meetin' colors on. So many good things in this photo. I have half a notion to save it to my Disney Stuff folder... So I will!
Those Alpine hills look awfully sparse... lots and lots of dirt! Looks more like 1956 than 1961. And what is that watery tunnel? It looks like Monstro should be stuck in there, but it's not the right location; Casey Jr. doesn't pass in front of Monstro!... And Monstro isn't that close to the Skyway Chalet.
Maybe this is Screechy's molting period, and that's why his plumage is so blah. Or, it's society's fault, like you said. Looks like the green bucket lady is hanging on to the center cable. We can see a smidgen of the Autopia lettering below Screechy.
Major, thanks for Earthifying these salmon-pink Martian pics.
@ JB-
"And what is that watery tunnel?"
THAT is the NW end 'turn' of the Storybook Land waterway... You must visit it again soon, to refresh your memory of the intertwining areas of Casey Jr. and Storybook Land.
Major, what a wonderful job you did on both of these!
In the first one, we can see those rectangular openings in the foundation for the Skyway chalet. I want to know what.....or who, was kept in the Skyway's basement. I hope it wasn't Alfre Woodard's son! We can also see the skinny waterfall that used to trickle down the left side of that Storybook Land cave. Major, I know you have mentioned the fact that it has been turned off for over two decades now, really bothers your friend. Well, it bothers me, too!
JB, in addition to what Nanook said about that cave, it used to be described by the Storybook Land hostesses as "the cave that the Wicked Witch used to deliver her poison apple to Snow White." After the redid the attraction in the 1990s, they changed the spiel to say that we are entering the "Cave of Wonders." That has also always bothered me. Anybody who has seen the movie....especially children, should remember that the entrance to the Cave of Wonders was in the shape of a giant tiger's head. Just what kind of scam is Disney trying to pull, hmmmm???
Amazing. I simply have no understanding of how this is even possible. Well done, Major!
Beautiful work, Major! Thank you!
The first photo is such an unusual vantage, I love it. The Chalet was one of the most beautiful pieces of work in the old Park. Notice the flower pots even on the back of the building where train passengers can see them. Notice the plain green trash can too.
That lady in the green bucket is going to throw a water balloon at us!

Nanook, I am sponsored by Restoration Hardware. BIG BUCKS. Now I know all about the Altec 31A sectoral horn (etc) and am finally ready to build Pepperidgeland! All we have are drinking fountains so far, but it’s a start. There are so many factors to take into account when spitting from a height, it’s nice to see those folks are so committed.
JB, like I said, I see things that I might try to improve now, but I feel like I could spend another hour on it with negligible results. I’m not sure I understand why the mini-berm had to be stripped of all plants, it looks pretty bare. But we know that it probably wouldn’t be long before it was green and nice again. I forgot about Screechy’s molting, you don’t want to be near her when she molts. She gets cranky. Like we all do!
Nanook, I’ll have to look at a map, I would have thought that the tunnel was at the SW turn. But I am sure you are right.
TokyoMagic!, thanks! I was wondering about those rectangular openings. I don’t remember seeing them before, though they have probably appeared in other photos and I just didn’t notice. “Alfre Woodard’s son”…. huh? I know this isn’t an ILL reference! Ha, funny that you mentioned that I gripe about that waterfall, I didn’t realize I was so predictable. I just wrote another blog post (you’ll see it in about a year!) whining about it again. I’m kind of surprised that they didn’t do the obvious thing and have the Canal Boats sail through the mouth of that giant tiger head like in “Aladdin”, how hard could that be? Maybe it would overwhelm the stuff around it?
Steve DeGaetano, it’s a lot of back and forth… reduce the red channel, but not too much, increase the blues, etc. I admit that a little eye of newt was involved!
JG, I really like that first view as well, the park looks so vibrant and fun. Unlike any other place! I think I have a closeup of those flower pots, definitely a detail that I was unaware of until I saw that. Good eye on the plain green trash can, those go back to the earliest of days. Being hit by a water balloon from the Skyway is good luck!
Major-
"I would have thought that the tunnel was at the SW". You’re correct it IS more SW than NW.
Nanook, thank you for the clarification!
“Alfre Woodard’s son”…. huh? I know this isn’t an ILL reference!
Major, on "Desperate Housewives", Alfre Woodard kept her son locked in the basement. They "lived" in the Munster's house on the Universal backlot, but unfortunately, her basement was not Grandpa's laboratory.
I notice that little Storybook Land waterfall every time you post a pic of it, even if it's way off in the distance. The fact that it was turned off, or perhaps broken and just never fixed, has bugged me even before you mentioned that your friend is also bothered by it. Walt would NOT be happy! Someone should go down into the Pirates of the Caribbean basement, and notify him.
