Old Snapshots

Yeesh! YEESH, do you hear?? I've got this batch of photo prints (possibly from 1965-ish) from a bunch that really only had one that was of particular interest - which you've already seen. Now I'm stuck using up the others - they might be terrible, but you get a lot of them! After today, there are another six, but some of those are at least a little bit of fun.

Here's a familiar group of crocodiles - you can only see two of them, though there is a third lurking behind that bush. My favorite pictures of these crocs are the ones with ducks taking a well-deserved (?) rest on the reptile's scaly backs. I hope they never flew over to the nearby Alligator Farm and tried the same stunt, because they would be ex-ducks.

The sheer number of critters in the "African Veldt" scene can't help but impress, but there are a lot of photos of them, many that are better than this humble snapshot.

I can't be mad at this old mill, part of Alice's village in Storybook Land. Alice bought flour from the mill to make her famous flapjacks. YES I READ THE BOOK!

Speaking of Storybook Land, you could see it from a Canal Boat OR from a Casey Junior Circus Train. Just do both, for gosh sakes. I never dreamed of running away to join the circus, but I'm always up for a ride on a circus train.

Major-
Cheers for the old mill.

I've always heard stories of Toby Tyler (Kevin Corcoran), "Mister Stubbs" and you causing copious amounts of mischief on set of Toby Tyler, but shamefully all your scenes never made the final cut. (You can share the secret with me... I won't tell a soul-!)

Thanks, Major.

Major, the alligators would be "ex-d," if those were AED's.

At first glance, the Casey Junior Circus Train photo looked like a real action shot - with the gal's blonde hair flying back. But upon closer inspection, I can't tell what I'm seeing flying off her head?? Maybe someone else can tell.

Fun fuzzy fotos! Thanks, Major.

"They might be terrible, but you get a lot of them!" Wow, such a deal! I feel so privileged! ;-)

1) Hmmm, I wonder if the ducks could tell that these crocs weren't the real thing? And, like you said, would they try it on real crocs/gators?

2) This one is actually quite good, as Jungle Cruise photos go. But the composition isn't all that great. All the critters are looking to the left... where we can't see.

3) I don't know why, but the old mill looks like the small model that it is. The illusion of seeing something real just isn't there. Maybe it's because we're looking down at it, not at eye level?

4) The gardeners need to get busy and eradicate that infestation of White Spiders in the flower bed. I like that blue and gold 'dragon car'(?). It would've been nice if we could see more of the train, but I guess the photographer would have had to step back about 50 feet or so to get it.

Sue, I almost went the AED route in my comment as well! I'm not sure what that white stuff is flying from that girl's head, but it isn't hair. It looks like gauzy cloth; a scarf perhaps?

Ah, now that I've had my fill of snapshots, I feel satiated. Thanks, Major.

Out of all the many visits I made to DL in the 70s and 80s, I don't think I ever saw a duck standing on one of the Jungle Cruise alligators until the 1990s. I also never saw them walking around the houses in Storybook Land either, until around that same time. Was I just missing out on this kind of thing, or did the ducks tend to stay in the Rivers of America for the first several decades of the park? After all, the alligators in the first pic are the ones that used to be in the connecting waterway between the Rivers of America and the the Jungle Cruise.

Alice bought flour from the mill to make her famous flapjacks.

Major, you forgot to mention the tree next to the mill, which Alice would tap for syrup. And mucilage.

I'm not sure what that white stuff is flying from that girl's head, but it isn't hair. It looks like gauzy cloth; a scarf perhaps?

JB, if it is a scarf, hopefully it won't "Isadora Duncan" her!

Plenty of green in these, no one needs a pinch today.

These are fine pics, Major. Maybe not the finest, but more than acceptable.

I’ve always enjoyed seeing the JC from the Treehouse, it’s one of those interwoven attraction pairs that make Disneyland so special.

The veldt is such a panorama, it’s hard to fit it all in one pic. I am curious why the gnus are looking the other way though? Avoiding the “hard facts” of jungle life?

Alice and flapjacks, do the English eat flapjacks? I know they eat scones, they a whole stone for that…

The fresh baked guy had some nice new videos of storybook land, there’s a Rapunzel Tower and lots of very nice night lighting. The patchwork quilt has had the stitches removed, so now it is just a garden. I hope that isn’t preparation for getting rid of it, but it doesn’t make sense to update everything and then remove it. The Casey train was all shiny and polished, which prompts me to ask… are today’s trains the originals, or have they been refurbished into oblivion and replaced with new?

Thanks Major!

Nanook, I knew you would be excited about the Old Mill because of the mention of flapjacks! I admit that I have never seen “Toby Tyler”, or if I have it was so long ago that I’ve forgotten it.

Lou and Sue, normally you can tell if it’s a duck or an AED because of the glowing red eyes, but I guess that a smart AED would know to turn off the LED lights in its eyes to fool you. I can’t tell what that “blond hair” is… a weird hat??

JB, My theory is that looking at more photos, even if they’re boring, might be better than just two bad photos. The jury is out. I’m assuming that the ducks had noticed that those crocs never moved an inch for days and weeks. I guess I’m tired of the African Veldt scene, all photos look just the same. So it’s an impressive tableau, but I don’t need to see it again! I think most scenes in Storybook Land look like the miniatures that they are… not sure how they could get around that. Maybe spray a foul scent into the air so that you aren’t even thinking about the miniatures? I do like that dragon car, I’m not sure if it was sculpted just for Disneyland, or if it somebody took a mold from an old carousel “sled” or something.

TokyoMagic!, I don’t think I’ve seen a duck on one of the crocs/gators, but I have seen ducks just swimming around happily as the boats go by, they don’t care. I sort of wonder why they are there, since there is presumably no food? Hmmm, now I’m trying to remember if I’ve ever seen ducks in Storybook Land. Even when I was a kid, I thought that the smart ducks lived in Frontierland for endless popcorn, churros, cheesy soft pretzels, and all kinds of other treats! Same with the little sparrows who flew around the Space Bar in Tomorrowland, grabbing french fries or whatever.

MS, oh yeah! Happy St. Patty’s Day! I am currently wearing no green!

JG, even if the Treehouse had nothing else, it would be worth going up for the elevated views. That being said, I’m probably too critical of some of the new Treehouse scenes, many are fun and whimsical. Maybe a little TOO whimsical? I just need to chill out. Being an expert in British life, I can tell you that most people love to wrap a scone in a flapjack and dip it in Mountain Dew. Heavenly. I’ve never quite understood why the stitches are no longer a part of Storybook Land’s quilt, maybe people didn’t really pick up on what they were supposed to be? If so, the host/hostess could explain! Your question about the Casey trains is a great one, I don’t know the answer, but maybe Mike Cozart does.

I thought that the side panels for Casey Jr.'s "dragon car" were recreated using the stationary "sleigh(s)" from the antique carousel that Walt purchased for Fantasyland. I think this was mentioned in an earlier souvenir book that was sold in the park. They carved a new set of horses to fill the space left by the removal of the sleigh(s).
